Box 600 Kaduna, Nigeria E N Dear Friends: ovember 18,1972 Since I last wrote you, my "cup" has been running over with joy many times as I have seen GOD WORK in lives and situations and answer prayers. Now it is time to share some of these things with you as the Christmas Season and Week of Prayer draw near. I feel sure your prayers have helped to bring some of these things to pass. Rejoice with mei There seems to be such an openness to the Gospel among the restless, the seeking, lost ones. I have witnessed the HOLY SPIRIT WORKING as people have had an encounter with Christ, Much joy has come from starting a little "Lend-A Book" library in my home so people can sign out books to read and return. One who has read some is a yous: salesman who feels called to preach. Another is a young Catholic electrician. Another is a young man of Catholic background and friend of my cook who just accepted Christ here the other day. He lost his job some months ago, is un- employed and came to realize the worldly life he was living was not what he wanted. He took three more books Thursday. PRAY FOR THESE as they read and grow. One of my neighbors for awhile was a Catholic Indian woman married to a Nigerian Yoruba) Moslem. There were opportunities to share Christ with them. GOD WORKED in the three young people's camps I helped in since I wrote. The Associational Jr. G.A. Camp was a fine display of how the Hausa-speaking women and pastors in one area planned and promoted a good camp. I see GOD WORKING in churches in and around Kaduna as I visit. What a joy to see one get their floor and mud benches cemented over. They dedicated the building just recently. Being given a blackboard for use in the reading class and choir practice meant much to them. Recentig I walked about six miles to one church on Sunday morning when I had to cross some water by foot and cross the river in a canoe. Then after services I was taken on the back of a member's motorcycle over a rugged path through guimea corn fields to a baby-naming céremony and feast at a home. Later I went back to my car on the back of the motorcycle over the bush path. Another Sunday members of one church I visited held their morning worship service outside in a village near them, taking benches with them after Sunday School. I have seen GOD AT WORK in lives so depressed and pitiful in the mental patients' ward here. The Lord opened the way for me to witness to several automobile accident patients at the General Hospital. Copies of "The Living New Testament"given to two of these were well received. (Reading in "The Living Bible"has meant much to me.) The one of Catholic background, an Ibo friend of my cook, has been bedridden for about 2% months, first his leg and hip in traction with a big metal piece through one part, and now at his home nearby in a cast. He has become a Christian during this time and has that New Testa- ment always by him, reading it and Christian leaflets oftene FRAY that he can walk again. He will be on crutches at firsts The other, a young Moslem man, who in a critical condition had to have his arm taken off, asked me, "Look at my arm! What must I do?" I had the opportunity to present Christ. Later he held the New Testament and said, "I love this Book}" PRAY that he will believe in Christ to save him. A letter just came from him saying he has transferred to his home town hospital and is getting along fine. I have seen GOD WORK in the heart of a man, an alhaji (one who has made the Moslem's pilgrimage to Mecca), It was the marvelous leading of the Holy Spirit when as I bought kerosene at his gas station some months ago he asked me how he could become a Christian. His children. were in a Catholic school and were asking to attend church. He gladly received a New Testament that very day and has read it and some leaflets faithfully, earnestly seeking and searching. My pastor, a young man and others have helped him and he says he has truly believed in Jesus. The latest report is that due to severe oppositiom from his Moslem family, he has not felt he could make his faith known publicly and "break away" from Islam. He is from a wealthy, prominent family. PLEASE PRAY earnestly for him. It has been a difficult time for hime He is sick this week. The young married couple (my caok and wife) for whom you have prayed, have a precious baby boy. As I stood with them at the dedication of the baby at one of our churches and later participated in the baby-naming ceremony that day here at their home, I have become somewhat of an "adopted mother and grandmother" to them. They named the baby Emmanuel which means "God Is With Us". And this makes us think of the true meaning of Christmas in God sending Christ to us. KEEP PRAYING for this couple. GOD HAS WORKED in wonderful ways for them. I felt GOD WORKING in our annual Mission Meeting of all missionaries, our two WMUConvention-wide planning meetings, our two WMU Executive Board meetings of our Northern Conference and in Associational Meetings. We see signs of growth in many places as the over 500 Baptist churches and preaching stationa in the North (20 Associations) join in evangelistic and educational efforts to proclaim the Good News. In special evangelistic efforts for next year, the theme will be "Christ Is The Answer". PRAY FOR these services. Associations are growing so that some have or are dividing into two er mores A number of our pastors in the North have been ordained this yeare You can see how GOD HAS BEEN WORKING AND BLESSING and why my "cup" is running over with joy and gratitude ---Christ in us, working in us. To GOD be the glory! May your hearts be filled with peace, love, and joy this Christmas season as you share Christ with others through your witness, prayers, and offerings. boxedek love with fap ths (Ephesians 6:23) arol Leigh Humphriés <——First fold here——»
