- ees UNITED STATES OF AMERICA oe OPERATIONS MISSION TO IRAQ POINT 4 UNITED STATES OF AMERICA America, Embassy, Baghdad, Iraq. April 25, 19556 Sayid Baqir H. Hassani, Director General Tobacco Monopoly Administration Baghdad, Iraqe Dear Sayid Hassani: In reply to your memo dated April 13, 1955 requesting a report on my trip to Sulaimaniya March 10. Report is as follows:= 1. To supervise the planting of tobacco seedbeds at Sulaimaniya for experimental work in tobacco production. The seedbeds have been planted. To meet and talk with Ridha Maroof, Director of Bakrajo, about securing his help in making field selections of tobacco seed during the tobacco growing season of 1955. This work is very essential in producing better tobacco seed for the growers. Ridha Maroof has a masters degree in tobacco production, is a very able and capable person, who can be of great help to the Tobacco Monopoly Administration in tobacco research. He is very willing to assist Tobacco Monopoly Administration in any way possible. To accompany Mre Gasperetti, one of KeTeAeMe's engineers to the construction sites at Halbeja, Sulaimaniya and Kirkuk. Second trip April 14 to April 20, 1955: To observe the growth and condition of tobacco plants in as many areas as possible. I found in all districts visited that the tobacco plants are well advanced for the season. The Koisenjak district will start transplanting from the seedbeds to the fields early in May. This appears to be the most advanced areas Farmers in all areas are complaining of a shortage of water. This will probably effect very much the production of tobacco in 1955. 2e To accompany Mr. Vetter to the construction sites at Koisenjak, Arbil, Shaglawa, Diana and Rawanduz. Respectfully, C.B. Darden USA, Tobacco Specialist
