The Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre is located at
the west end of West Chestnut in the Montford area of
Asheville, and is a part of the Montford Community
Complex (see map below). Handicapped access is
available from the actors' entrance on Jersey Street.

Feel free to bring something to make you more
comfortable—our terraces are wide enough to accommo-
date lawn chairs, blankets, etc. Lawn chairs are also avail-
able for rental at the concession stand. The temperature
often drops as the night progresses, so it is desirable to
bring a sweater or a jacket. Our concession stand offers
hot and cold drinks and a variety of snacks, but feel free to
bring a picnic! And follow along, if you like, with our
scene-by-scene synopsis in the Playbill.

But mainly, come to enjoy Shakespeare as he was
meant to be enjoyed—off the page and on the stage!

Our productions start promptly at 7:30 PM and
are performed on most Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
nights in late May through early October. Many
Shakespeare plays start with an explanatory prologue and
almost all devote the first scene to set the plot, so get there
on time! We play through a light sprinkle. We pause for a
brief shower. We cancel on an all-night rain.

In 1997, our 25th season, the City of Asheville
christened our permanent home the “Hazel
Robinson Amphitheatre,” in honor of our founder.

Ebenezer Scrooge

Anewly staged retelling of Dickens’ immortal
story of a lonely, bitter misanthrope and his pro-
found experience of redemption, A Christmas
Carol is presented annually in early December by
the Montford Park Players. Through the inter-
vention of four spirits, Ebenezer Scrooge is led on
a journey through his emotionally charged past,
his harsh and loveless present, and his bleak
future. In the end, Scrooge changes his life and
reverts to the generous, kind-hearted soul he was
in his youth. The story deals extensively with
two of Dickens’ recurrent themes, social injustice
and poverty, the

relationship between

the two, and their

causes and effects.
