Geyer, Editor Alliance Review A Treat That Comes to a Community But a Few Times in a Generation It affords me pleasure to write these lines in commendation of Raymond J. Jeffreys and his work. Mr. Jeffreys spoke to a large audience in our new High School auditorium and gave us such a rare evening of good things as comes to a community but a few times ina generation. I cannot call his work a lecture, because it is so much more than that. It consists of education, entertainment, humor, pathos, oratory, eloquence and charm, all combined, and an undefinable atmosphere all its own. He has a real message for real people, many a good laugh for those who love laughter, deep thoughts for the reflective, and a charm and beauty of diction that will make-a strong appeal ta. the most cul- tured and refined. I heartily recommend him, for I am sure he can give any audience a real worth while program. A. J. Love, Supt. Clyde, Ohio A 100 Per Cent Soldier in the World War Lt. R. J. Jeffreys served overseas during the warin the U.S. Air Service. As his Com- manding Officer, in my daily contact with him, I built up a tremendous admiration for his abilities, intelligence, courage and willing- ness to work. In fact,in all those things that go to make a good soldier and a fine man, he measured upal100O percent. There isno man I met in the Army in whom I would have a greater faith or trust. Walter J. Jeffreys gave a lecture in our Athletic Hall, and aside from being entertaining, was highly educational. One of the features about the lecture was the fact that the invitation to Mr. Jeffreys was by the request of the High School. A large percentage of the High School students were in attendance. His popularity was due to a short lecture given in the High School the previous season. I feel sure that any community or organization is giving their patrons something beyond an or- dinary lecture in this entertainment. Travers Ousterhout, Supt. St. Charles, Mich. Quick to Grasp the Inter- esting and Unusual Raymond J. Jeffreys has a discriminating sense of news values, is quick to grasp the interesting and unusual aspects of events, places, personali- ties, and conditions, and is a facile, ready writer. I have followed closely Mr. Jeffreys’ work as editor of the Mount Union College weekly news- paper and annual, as city editor of The Alliance Review, and as managing editor of The Colum- biana Ledger. Wide Experiences Help Understand All Angles of Life Mr. Jeffreys’ world wide experiences in travel, in the army and in various walks of life, make it possible for him to understand and appreciate all angles of life. I have heard his various lectures a number of times and have known him personally for many years. He is a valuable speaker and his keen sense of humor makes his lectures the very highest type. The experience he has gained from extensive travel gives him an understanding of world needs and his ability as a lecturer and writer puts him in the class of really useful men. He is an invaluable man inany great national problem, for he hasa force- ful, persuasive and convincing manner as a speaker and thoroughly understands the publicity “game”. I have been associated with this young man in a number of big undertakings and have found him to be a loyal and devoted friend, a man of qualities that can be depended upon in the time of need. Lectures are Enlightening and Entertaining It is with pleasure that I take this opportunity of expressing my delight in the unusual enter- tainments given by R. J. Jeffreys. His experiences during his many unusual adventures were among the most unique and interesting that I have ever been privileged to hear, and his humorous pres- entation of them made the evening entertainment one never to be forgotten. His subject material is very enlightening as well as entertaining, and his enthusiastic and op- timistic personality gives a forcefulness to his stories. of adventure that holds the attention of the most difficult. His College course was interrupted by the war, in which he rendered valuable service as an aviator. Since leav- ing college he has made a success as a jour- nalist and lecturer, and has demonstrated the fact that he has a gift for discovering material of human interest. Dr. W. H. McMaster Pres. Mt. He is honest, straightforward and courageous ... typical of the keen cut Twentieth Century American. His college training, newspaper experi- ences, Army service, varied travels and world adventures, makes him exceedingly well fitted for the lecture platform. His vim and dash, along with his keen understand- ing of human nature and of world problems, give spice, variety and entertainment to his lectures. But above all, he has a message in every lecture, something that will benefit every community. Mr. Jeffreys is the type of young Ameri- can manhood that is needed on the platform today. I have no hesitancy in recommen- ding him to any audience in the country, and wish to give him my hearty endorse- ment. Supt. W. T. Barr Quaker City Public Schools, Ohio Was Received by Government Officials of Mexico After returning from his thrilling adventure into that mysterious southern country of Mexico, which holds such a charm, alluring fascination, and to some a dreaded horror, Mr. Jeffreys pulled the curtains aside and gave the Realty Board a brief glimpse into that hot bed of political up- heavel and revolution, so much discussed and so little understood. In terms forceful because of their brevity and scope, Mr. Jeffreys pictured Mexico at its best and at its worst. He gave his hearers a colorful glimpse into the whirl of politics, into the dull drab exist- ance of the miserable peons and the high life of the Spanish aristocracy. He presented a keen insight into Mexico’s marvelous natural resources and her latent possibilities. C. C. Eynon, Sec. Alliance, O., Real Estate Board Most vivid descriptive ability. Mrs. (Rev.) Vivid Description of Passion Play Makes It a Living Reality Mr. Jeffreys delighted a large audience which filled our church to hear him give his lecture on “The Passion Play”. This great drama has always been regarded with much interest among all people, and it has all of it’s gripping power when told by Mr. Jeffreys. Mr. Jeffreys pleasing manner of address and vivid portrayal of that divine drama, as reverently enacted by the humble peasant villagers of Oberamergau, all combine to make you feel an intense interest. His unusual presentation of this world famed play helps to unveil religion and make the Bible a living reality. C, S.:MeGrath, Ph. D. Makesa Hitand Successfully Holds All Ages When Mr. Jeffreys appeared at our school, we had a special afternoon meeting at which we had all of the students from the fourth grade to the twelfth grade of the High School and he was able to handle his subject so successfully that he held all ages for nearly an hour and a half—carrying them into fits of humor, breathless thrills and ab- sorbed interest. Mr. Jeffreys’ experiences in foreign lands were very interesting and of educational value. We were glad of the opportunity of securing him for our school. Supt. W. E. Parker Rochester, Mich. Ottilia M. Frisch Commissioner of Schools Saginaw County, Mich. A HUSTLING NEWSPAPER MAN Mr. Jeffreys is a “live” hustling newspaper man and took hold of The Columbiana Ledger when it was down and out but soon made things hum. He changed it from a poor struggling parasite to a remarkably interesting paper which became the foremost publication in eastern Ohio. The Inland Merchant, N. Y. —n9— Makes Success of Newspaper The Jeffreys Bros. bought the local paper in the town, and to the casual observer and the business men, they were taking an awful chance, for the paper had not been prosperous. But they thought they knew what remedy would resuscitate the invalid and they began to apply it. In less than three months they had com- pletely revolutionized the paper. They put life and pep into it and created a community pride in it’s welfare. The Publishers Auxiliary Chicago, Ill. Studied Conditions in Many Countries | This letter will introduce Mr. R. J. Jeffreys His Colorful Experiences Make Lectures Entertaining-Educational-Inspirat‘onal and Leaves the Audience Feeling Good Inside and Smiling Outside Unique—with the Charm of Adventure and the Romance of Wanderlust xy A YMOND J. JEFFREYS, “The Yankee Globe Trotter,” W2¢ although not old in years, has had a more colorful life, = more unusual experiences and a more varied career than most men ever have ina lifetime. His “wanderings” have taken him into nearly every walk of life and into many strange corners of the globe. He is full of energy, vitality and activ- ity and is never found on the beaten paths of travel. As a High School Superintendent says, “Mr. Jeffreys is the typical representative American type—courageous, a keen observer and adventuresome.” His entertainments and travelogues are full of sparkling wit, clever humor and interesting observations. He tells of his hardships, thrilling adventures, gripping exper- iences and luring “vagabonding” in an entertaining, educa- tional and inspirational way; unique—with the charm of ad- venture and the romance of wanderlust. The dream of millions of people, the world over, is to some day have the privilege of travel. Knowing that the most of us shall never realize this great dream, Mr. Jeffreys brings all the thrills of adventure, the incidents of “globe trotting” and the advantages of world-travel to our doors, with- out the expense, hardships or responsibilities of extensive touring. His vivid story satisfies that inner longing, common to all mankind, to know more about our fellowmen in other parts of the world, to compare their strange lands with our own and to have a more intimate knowledge of world-wide affairs. Mr. Jeffreys’ varied experiences and rubbing shoulders with people in all walks of life, from peasants to kings, gives him a warm and sympathetic understanding of the pleasures, the sorrows and the needs of humanity. As one man said, “Mr. Jeffreys has a real message for real people, many a good laugh for those who love laughter, deep thoughts for the reflective, and a charm and beauty of diction that will make a strong appeal to the most cultured and refined. I cannot call his work a lecture, for it is so much more than that. It consists of education, entertainment, humor, pathos, oratory, eloquence and charm all combined, and an undefinable atmosphere all its own.” As a Soldier: At the outbreak of the world war, Mr. Jeffreys was in college. He left his work, home and happiness to join the colors but was turned down, as physically unfit, seven times before finally accepted in the U. S. Air Service. Seven weeks after leaving home, he was on his way overseas. Over there he served in four countries, nearly two hundred camps and on two fronts. His varied experiences in the army were fascinating and unusual. As a Journalist: Immediately after returning from overseas, Mr. Jeffreys returned to college and took up journalism instead of law, as was his original plan. The following year he received his degree, and then served on a number of newspapers, where he was given the very highest type of references. As an Editor: He then bought a paper of his own and went into the publishing business. He soon outgrew the old quarters and erected a beautiful new plant. Other papers were added to the list until he had a very fine organiza- tion. He finally sold this business and organized a motoring magazine in St. Louis, called “Luck o’ the Road.” As a World Adventurer: He conceived the idea of organizing a newspaper icature story syndi- cate and traveling all over the world to supply thrilling material, to satisfy that inner longing that we all have, to know more about our fellow men in the strange corners of the globe. This new adventure took him into many interesting parts of the world and through many unusual experiences. As a Syndicate Writer: His -articles were published all over the United States and were re- ceived with wild enthusiasm. As one editor said, “We consider Mr. Jeffreys’ stories extra good and want all that we can get.” As an Entertainer and Lecturer: He has won a name which is as distinct and unique, in the realm of the platform, ‘as his colorful life has been in his world of experiences. He enjoys the-reputation of being one of the most popular and easiest to book, of any talent appearing before High Schools, Young Folks groups, Service Clubs, Churches, Veteran’s Organizations and Social Clubs. He has a happy combination of “fun and facts” which are entertaining, educational and inspirational. As an Evangelist: He has a personality which wins its way into the hearts of the com- munity. Although he has had but limited experience in this field, during one meeting he “took a town by storm”, which had never before been able to hold a successful meeting, and had one hundred and forty eight additions in three weeks. As a School Teacher: He also won a number of attractive opportunities in this field, when he filled out a year as Supt., of Schools and was given a unanimous vote of the Board of Education to return for the permanent position, but his desire to “taste life” from all angles, led him into a new field the fol- lowing year. As a Circulation Builder: Mr. Jeffreys has had a wide experience as a newspaper circulation campaign expert, on many papers in all parts of the country. He has also promoted a number of successful enterprises in the publication field, and continually receives offers to handle big propositions in this line of work. One big daily paper says, “He is a tireless worker and gets the results”. The manager of a magazine which he launched said, “He is a natural born promotor and campaign manager”. As an Artist: Before attending college Mr. Jeffreys studied art and was preparing himself for this work when his interests were diverted to law. He has produced some excellent work in oil, water, crayon, pen and pencil. He has had also a lot of experience as a cartoonist. For several years he filled engagements as a “chalk talk cartoonist” on the platform. As a Radio Entertainer: Mr. Jeffreys put on one of the most novel and unique aviation prog- rams on the air. He received “reams” of fan letters and the highest praise from his fellow entertainers of the air. As a Business Man: Cleveland’s “Who’s Who”, published in four beautiful leather bound volumes under the title of “This Cleveland of Ours”, says, “Raymond J. Jeffreys is one of Cleveland’s most successful and enterprising young business men. He is the president and practically sole owner of fou: corporations.” He weathered the storm of one of America’s worst financial depressions when most other firms were forced to throw up their hands in bankruptcy. As a Cosmopolite: There are very few walks of life in which Mr. Jeffreys has not had a “little taste”of their sphere of living, and appreciates their daily prob- lems, their joys and sorrows and their “ups and downs”. He has tried nearly every imaginable job, if only for a few weeks, to get a sympathetic understanding of their “daily world”. All these things combined make him an extremely popular entertainer, for he never fails to reach his audiences in their own world of thought. “He has a contagious spirit of enthusiasm”— Spt. J. R.
