“The Common Glory” by Paul Green Matoaka Lake Theatre beside THE JAMESTOWN Roap WHILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA Opening Date, July 17, 1947 The Jamestown Corporation in cooperation with the VIRGINIA CONSERVATION COMMISSION presents “The Common Glory” by Paul Green The Drama *“The Common Glory,’’ a symphonic drama, depicting the part the Virginia Colony played in the establishment of democratic government in the new world, will be presented at the Ma- toaka Lake ‘Theatre, beside the Jamestown Road, a short distance from the heart of the City of Williamsburg, Virginia, beginning on the evening of July 17, 1947. The Author Paul Green, Pulitzer prize winning author of “In Abraham’s Bosom’? and many other hit productions and also author of ““The Lost Col- ony’ which has been presented to packed audiences for many summers at Roanoke Island, North Carolina, is the author of the Drama. This covers not only the early days of the Colony but also that period, from 1775 to 1782, so vital to the establishment of the Nation and the lives of every American. The Sponsors The historical Drama is being sponsored by the Jamestown Corporation, a non-stock, non- profit corporation, in cooperation with the Vir- ginia Conservation Commission. “The honor- ary president of the Corporation is the Gov- ernor of Virginia, William Munford Tuck. Its president is Colgate W. Darden, Jr., former Governor of Virginia and president-elect of the University of Virginia. The Amphitheatre The open-air amphitheatre seating 2,500 is of brick and concrete construction conforming to the natural contour of the ground, with a twenty-foot slope to the Lake which is 300 feet wide at this point. The stage, which is sixty-two feet wide, is at the water's edge, flanked by scenery docks and dressing rooms for the cast. The seating arrangement has been designed for the comfort of the audience. Each seat is a comfortable wooden chair with back and arms and reinforced with metal. The Cast The cast will be composed of outstanding professional actors, augmented by talented Vir- ginia players selected from colleges, universi- ties and theatrical groups of the State. Music will be furnished by the forty-voice choir of the College of William and Mary, second oldest college in America. The Drama will be staged under the super- vision of Paul Green, assisted-by technical ex- perts, for each phase of its presentation. Performances Performances will be held nightly, five or six nights a week (to be determined later) be- ginning July 17th and continuing throughout the summer and early fall. The presentation of the Drama is planned as an annual event. Parking Facilities Ample parking space will be available just inside the gateway leading to the amphitheatre grounds. Picnic Area Ticket holders desiring to have picnic supper within the lovely wooded area comprising the amphitheatre grounds will find ample facilities including open fireplaces and pavilions.
