Grimes, a slaveowner, owned Grimesland, a large plantation near Washington, NC; he offered his servics to the Confederacy and fought in most of the battles in the East, rising to become a major general. By 1911-12, Tyree was the sole owner. He died between 1917 and 1919, and the studio was sold to a photographer named Coble.
