| 63103 | 0568 | The Horse in Motion. "Mahomet," owned by Leland Stanford: cantering at an 8 minute gait over the Palo Alto track, 18th June, 1878. | 18 June 1878 | Albumin print mounted on card and issued by Morse's Gallery. The "Horse in Motion" is part of a six albumin print series, each depicting six to twelve images of the movement of a horse and rider. These images are some of the earliest examples of time based, sequential phases of movement, or chronophotography. Mahomet's owner and former California Governor, Leland Stanford, commissioned the series of prints which were taken at his farm in Palo Alto. images from this set were later used in Muybridge's initial Zoopraxiscope presentations-a prelude to modern motion picture cinematography.
Please return photograph and case to Conservation.
