PID Identifier Title Date Description
MC0002-001 Virginiae partis australis, et Floridae partis orientalis, interjacentiumq[ue] regionum, nova descriptio [between 1671 and 1673]
MC0002-002 Virginiae partis australis, et Floridae partis orientalis, interjacentiumq[ue] regionum, nova descriptio [1662] [note from conservation: Elephant watermark]
MC0002-003 Virginia, Marylandia et Carolina in America Septentrionali, Britannorum industria excultæ repræsentatæ à Ioh. Bapt. Homann S.C.M. Geog. Norimbergæ [1714] [note from conservation: The map was likely printed around the same time that Alexander Spotswood, the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia was working to found Germanna (here depicted as German Town | Teutsche Statt), an inland colony being established for German immigrants. Spotswood had designed this to both help protect the coastal British colonies from further French and Native encroachment as well as for profit from land speculation.]
MC0002-004 Carolina [1746?] [note from Conservator: According to William P. Cumming's "The Southeast in Early Maps" the image is from Samuel Simpson's The agreeable historian. London, 1746, v. 3. Has anyone checked if Cumming is correct or is there a reason a NC map was included in a geographical description of the non-colonial parts of the UK? The title page of Volume 3 of "The Agreeable Historian" indicates that it is specifically related to counties starting with Norfolk and ending with Yorkshire in England located on the Isle of Great Britain. http://www.lakesguides.co.uk/large/smp3it.jpg . Volume 1 was Bedfordshire to Essex, and Vol 2 was Gloucestershire to Middlesex. It seems odd, but I know stranger things have happened. Sadly, I could only find volumes 1 &2 on the ECCO database]
MC0002-005 Carte de la Caroline et Georgie : pour servir d l'hist. générale des voyages tirée des auteurs anglois par M.B., ing. de la marine ; A. v. Krevelt, sculpsit. 1773
MC0002-006 Partie méridionale de la Louisiane, avec la Floride, la Caroline et la Virginie par le Sr. d'Anville 1776 [note from conservator: watermark is 3 crescent moons, and countermark of a floral design over the initials A S, often seen in Italian paper]
MC0002-007 Carte de la partie sud des Etats Unis de l'Amérique septentrionale par M. Bonne 1783 [note from conservator: Watermark is grape cluster. Ribobert Bonne was the Royal Cartographer to France, succeeding Jacques Nicolas Bellin (see MC0047) to the office of Hydrographer at the Depot de al Marine. Keeping with Bonne's more scientific style, the map lacks ornamentation.]
MC0002-008 Regni Mexicani seu Novæ Hispaniæ, Ludovicianæ, N. Angliæ, Carolinæ, Virginæ et Pensylvaniæ necnon insvlarvm archipelagi Mexicani in America Septentrionali accurata tabula exhibita â Ioh. Baptista Homanno [1759] [Note from conservator: The indication in the collection guide that the images are from steel engravings is highly suspect. Steel plate engraving was not invented until 1792, and did not see wide use outside of printing schoolbooks or bank notes until shortly before 1820. Most likely, this would be a copper plate engraving. In addition to depicting the names of cities, tribes, and geographical features, the kingdom of Quivira, one of the mythical Seven Cities of Gold that Francisco Vasquez de Coronado searched for is seen just below the title cartouche.]
MC0002-009 Map of the southern parts of the United States of America by Abraham Bradley, Junr.; corrected by the author [1804] [note from conservation following earlier e-mail with Patricia: The 1804 date comes from the fact that the map was included in an atlas, The American gazetteer, by Jedidiah Morse, 2nd ed., published in 1804. A version of this map was included in the first edition of Morse’s atlas, which was published in 1797; however, the Mississippi Territory depicted here did not exist until 1798 and was shown as the "Georgia Western Territory" in the earlier version.]
MC0002-010 Johnson's North and South Carolina by Johnson and Ward [1864] [note from conservation: Lithograph. Many of Johnson's maps were based on steel plate engravings made by J.H.Colton but were transferred to lithographic stones for faster printing speed.]
MC0047 La Caroline dans l'Amérique septentrionale suivant les cartes angloises [1764]
MC0028 Norumbega et Virginia, 1597 [1607?] [Note from Conservation: map depicts the mythical city of "Norumbega," which is featured on many early maps. Originally spelled "Oranbega" in Verrazzano's 1529 map of America. Ortelius' 1570 map of America and here Wytfilet use the later spelling "Norumbega."]

MC0046 Virginiae item et Floridae Americae Provinciarum, nova descriptio [between 1630 and 1636?]
