C. F. Rhem is Charles Flint Rhem and he was attending Clemson University at the time this letter was written. "Flint" was a star pitcher for the Clemson team and he tried to bring himself to the attention of Frank Navin, owner of the Detroit Tigers, in hopes of getting hired for the team. This letter from Ty Cobb, who was player/manager for the Tigers at that time, was in reply to Flint's letter. Navin did not decide to hire Rhem.
