1 62805 OH0186 Walter P. Murphy, Jr., Oral History Interview April 26, 2001 Walter Patrick Murphy was born October 25, 1919, in Brooklyn, New York, to Walter and Ellen Murphy. He graduated from United States Naval Academy (1941), went on to serve on the Support Force (May-December 1941) aboard the cruiser USS Nashville. He graduated from Submarine School in July 1942 and continued to serve on submarines until he retired in August 1966. He had also been involved with the Polaris Missile program. After he retired, he accepted a civil service position with NASA as Senior Staff Officer to the Director of Kennedy Space Center where he stayed for seven years during the Apollo Program. He then became the NASA European Representative for five years in Paris until 1978 when he returned to California to head the NASA Office at Vandenberg AFB. Murphy retired again in 1983 and moved to Santa Barbara, California, where he died May 24, 2013, at the age of 93.

2 62806 OH0187 John W. Palm Oral History Interview April 26, 2001 CDR John W. Palm graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with the Class of 1941 and joined the USS Yorktown. Later WWII service included the USS Indiana commissioning and SW Pac (Communications), and XO on the USS Weeden (DE 797) in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific. Post-war he was involved in Intelligence with tours involving Russia, at the Pentagon, and with COMNAVFE (Commander Naval Forces, Far East). He also had tours as the CO on the USS Durik (DE 666), CO on USS Rushmore (LSD 14), and with Ops on the USS Toledo in the Korean War. Palm retired from the Navy in 1961 and spent the next 20 years as a Professor teaching Political Science/International Studies.

Cocke Oral History Interview April 27, 2001 Captain Cocke recounts his background in Virginia, attendance at Bullis' Prep School, and experiences at U.S. Naval Academy (graduate in the Class of 1941). He comments on assignment to USS MISSISSIPPI, damage to the ship as result of a severe storm in the North Atlantic, and service in the Pacific after repairs were completed. He also describes training at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as a civil engineer; duty on Guam; and planning and construction assignments at Norfolk, Atlantic City, San Diego, Hawaii, Midway, Easter Island, Johnson Island, and Kwajalein.

4 62808 OH0207 Robert W. Hayler, Jr., Oral History Interview February 7, 2002 Capt. Hayler, a member of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1941, is the son of Vice Admiral Hayler. During a twenty-nine year career, he served in the FANNING, GEARING, HARMON, HUNTINGTON, GOODRICH, and JOHN PAUL JONES. Among his numerous duty assignments were the Bureau of Naval Personal, aide to the Chief of Naval Operations, staff of U.S. CinCeur, commander Destroyer Division 132, Chief of Staff for ComCarrierDivision 17, commander of Destroyer Squadron 32, Chief of Staff for the South Atlantic Force, and Office of CNO Op 06.

5 62809 OH0208 Charles Gray Strum Oral History Interview February 7, 2002 Captain Strum, USNA Class of 1941, saw World War II duty in the USS PENNSYLVANIA. Late in the war he became a naval avitor, served as CO of VU-10 in Guantanamo, operations officer at UtWingLant, and CO of FASRon107 stationed in Iceland. Other assignments include the USS MONTEREY, VW-15, and VW-1 on Guam.

6 62810 OH0209 Marguerite Booth Oral History Interview January 19, 2001 Marguerite Lyle Drinkwater Booth was born in Manteo, North Carolina, on February 2, 1916, and she died there on May 29, 2004. She owned and operated the Booth Guest House in Manteo, North Carolina. Mrs. Booth also lived in Norfolk, Virginia, for thirty years while her husband John L. Booth was serving in the U.S. Navy. Booth discusses her childhood memories, family life and history on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and in Norfolk, Virginia. She also talks about her father, Alpheus W. Drinkwater, the telegrapher who relayed the news of the successful first airplane flights of the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk, N.C., in 1903.

7 62811 OH0211 Everett Allen Malcolm Oral History Interview February 7, 2003 Everett Allen Malcolm was a member of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1941 (gunnery officer and supply officer) and was stationed aboard the USS ARIZONA at the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He later served aboard the USS INDIANA and USS POLLUX. He earned an MS (petroleum engineering) at the University of Pittsburgh (1956). U.S. naval officer and engineer; San Jose, CA. Commander Malcolm survived the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, because he had recently undergone surgery and had not yet returned to duty aboard the ARIZONA when the attack occurred.
