| 0505 | Civil War Miscellany | 1862-1865,1978 | Items include a photocopied letter and circular. The letter (April 1862) was written by a Union soldier of the Rhode Island Volunteers to his mother describing the successful bombardment of Fort Macon, including strategy and weapons used. Also included is a brief comment on Beaufort, N.C. The circular (July 1863) was issued by Brigadier General B. H. Robertson and was intended for regimental commanders. It pertains to the necessity of grazing horses at regulated hours and controlling their movements rather than allowing them to wander over fields.
Also included is a statement (1862) of the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad Company, an oath of allegiance by members of Capt. B. Hill's Brigade taken at U.S. Forces Headquarters, Gunthersville, Alabama, May 16, 1865, water colored lithographs from Harper's Weekly (1862) containing scenes of Washington, Elizabeth City, and Kinston, N.C., a photocopy of a transcript prepared in 1978 of "My Experiences in the Civil War" which was originally written by Laura Augusta Jordan-Applewhite (wife of John Thomas Applewhite) fifty years after the Civil War ended and a $1000 Civil War bond issued by North Carolina in 1862 and signed by North Carolina Governor Zebulon B. Vance.
The above text was left in the job to reference how the items were originally described.
