H.P. Van Hoy first started the event, The Union Grove Old Time Fiddlers' Convention, in 1924 to raise money for local education. The event ran until 1969 after they were forced to move their location. H. P.’s sons then began holding competing events. Harpers son, Hank Van Hoy, continued the tradition under the official name of The Ole Time Fiddler’s & Bluegrass Festival. Due to low attendance, the event was temporarily ended again after the 2012 convention, but was revived again in 2016, once again under the name of The Union Grove Old Time Fiddlers' Convention.
