Muse at Chancellor's Society Gala 2002 William Van Muse served from 2001-2003 as the fifth chancellor of the university, and the ninth chief administrative officer of the school. Muse’s administration oversaw several additions to the main campus, including construction of the Science and Technology Building, an expansion of the Rivers Building, renovation of Flanagan Building, and construction of the West End Dining Hall. These projects had been funded by the N. C. higher education bond passed during the final years of the Eakin administration.

Richard Eakin c1987-2001 Richard Ronald Eakin served from 1987-2001 as the fourth chancellor of East Carolina University, and the eighth chief administrative officer of the school. During Eakin’s fourteen-year tenure, ECU’s student body grew by 5,000, to 18,000 students, with incoming freshman boasting test scores at all-time highs. Eakin rightly forecast growth of student enrollment in the decade ahead at 25-27,000. He is pictured here standing in front of the Dail House, the current Chancellor's Residence.
