"General Frank A. Armstrong’s handwritten firsthand account of the German Air Blitz of England in late 1940. Armstrong’s account was written during his tenure in England as a military observer, and contains a lucid description of British life during the German Air Blitz. Also, in the back of the diary, are a few handwritten notes related to the war, as well as one typed letter from Armstrong. The letter is dated 1942 and begins with “Dear Diary”, though the content does not appear to be included in Armstrong’s account. The letter is very descriptive concering specific strategies being implemented in the war.
The “nearly” word for word account is also included in ""Wake the Sleeping Giant"" [ca. 1960], an unpublished, typescript autobiography of Armstrong’s life as told to William E. Hickenbotham. Armstrong was born in Hobgood, North Carolina. His grandson, Frank Armstrong IV, resides in California but found his grandfather’s original account while on a recent trip to North Carolina visiting relatives.
