49593 OH0080.0.0 Erling H. Hustvedt Oral History Interview 19851122 Captain Hustvedt, the son of Vice Admiral Olaf M. Hustvedt, entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1937 as part of the class of 1941. He was dropped from the Academy due to an error in evaluating his eyesight and he subsequently received an engineering degree from MIT. After the outbreak of World War II he was commissioned as a reserve officer and assigned to the USS South Dakota. He was involved in the battles of Santa Cruz and Guadalcanal and in Atlantic Theater operations after the South Dakota returned to the U.S. for repair. He subsequently served as executive officer of the USS Ellis and the USS McCalla.

Hustvedt Oral History Interview 19751231 Vice Admiral Hustvedt (USNA Class of 1909), during a thirty six year career, distinguished himself in Naval Ordnance and as battleship commander. He served in World War I and World War II, headed the Experimental Section in the Bureau of Ordnance, served as Production Chief of the Naval Gun Factory, commanded the USS Detroit, the USS North Carolina, Commander Battleships, Atlantic Fleet, and Battleship Division 7. This is a copy of sessions conducted by the U.S. Naval Institute in 1975. This copy was made with the approval of Captain Erling H. Hustvedt, son and heir of Admiral Hustvedt. All copyright privileges belong to the U.S. Naval Institute and the family of Admiral Hustvedt.

49596 OH0085.0.0 Elizabeth Evans Savage Oral History Interview 19870113 Elizabeth Evans Savage, a resident of Greenville, N.C., was born in Robeson County, N.C. Her father was a prominent physician practicing in the town of Rowland. In 1916 she enrolled at East Carolina Teachers Training School. After graduating in 1918 she remained in Greenville to teach in the public schools. At the time of her retirement, Mrs. Savage had taught in public and private schools for fifty four years. The interview concentrates on Mrs. Savage's childhood in Rowland, her father's medical practice, his hobby of raising fighting cocks, and her early recollections of Greenville.
