The theatre was built through the Works Progress Administration (WPA), as part of the New Deal. The first director, Samuel Selden, saw to it that the stage was built first, so that the cast could rehearse while the theatre was completed.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, to bolster attendance "celebrity nights" were created. This photo is most likely from one of those nights.
