Photocopy of an original color rendering of a costume design for a very early (1937-1941) production of The Lost Colony by its first costume designer, Ora Mae Davis.
"Founding Fathers, Paul Green's 'The Lost Colony' Performed on Roanoke Island" article from New York Times, 15 August 1937. Discusses the play, building of Waterside Theatre, and brief history of Sir Walter Raleigh's colony.
Photo of Waterside Theatre, home of "The Lost Colony," being built. The theatre was built through the Works Progress Administration (WPA), as part of the New Deal. The first director, Samuel Selden, saw to it that the stage was built first, so that the cast could rehearse while the theatre was completed.
Photograph from "The Lost Colony" in the opening scene where a human totem pole is created. 1990 marked the first season with new costumes designed by Tony Award-winning costume designer William Ivey Long.
Photograph of group behind the scenes. Left to right: unknown, William Prince (as Ananias Dare), Julia Meade (as Eleanor), Kay Kaiser, Lillian Prince (as Queen Elizabeth), Sam Selden, Robert Armstrong (as John Borden), and Don Somers (as Old Tom). In the late 1940s and early 1950s, to bolster attendance "celebrity nights" were created. This photo is most likely from one of those nights.
