"There are notes provided by the researcher. (the original map is at William L. Clements Library, Ann Arbor, MI) Governor William Tryon employed French surveyor Claude Joseph Sauthier from 1768 until 1770 to draw plans of ten towns in North Carolina. Sauthier continued to work for Tryon after Tryon became Governor of New York. In 1763, before coming to America, Sauthier wrote a treatise on garden design. It has been established from archaeological digging that the gardens shown around Tryon Palace in his New Bern map never existed: these must have represented a proposal that Sauthier made to Tryon that was not implemented before their move to New York. It is not know whether other gardens detailed on Sauthier’s maps - particularly that of Edenton - were real, or were an attempt by him to obtain employment in laying them out. Tryon was formerly an officer in the British army. It has been suggested that his purpose in having the maps drawn was preparation for possible future military action in North Carolina by British troops and, in particular, that having some buildings marked in red indicated where troops could be quartered. There are two versions of the map of Edenton, distinguished by the date in the cartouche: either “drawn in 1769” or “drawn in June 1769”. Originals of the full set of ten maps are in the British Library, to which they came from King George III. The State Archives in Raleigh has copies. There are also (different) originals in the Sir Henry Clinton Collection at the Clements Library in Ann Arbor. What is in the EVM Papers is a copy of the ‘1769’ map from the Clements Library, very clearly showing what was marked in red - better so than any other copy I have seen. William L. Clements acquired these papers from General Henry Clinton’s elderly great-great-granddaughter in the early 1920s. Sauthier drew maps in New York for the British army in 1776 & 1777, while Clinton was in command there. After leaving America in 1777, Sauthier worked as secretary to General Sir Hugh Percy at Alnwick House in Northumberland. "

I've talked to the map curator at Clements Library and he said if we send a permission for use form we can put this map online. I have talked to Jennifer about this and will send in the form today. In the meantime, if we could get the two reference copies by Thursday that would greatly appreciated.
