TO THE MEMBERS OF THE MEDICAL AND DENTAL STAFF OF ST. ANTHONY'S HOSPITAL:
The Chief of Staff of Northwest Texas Hospital has issued a statement which we
feel requires some clarification. In a letter dated September 7, 1967, and
addressed to the members of the Medical Staff of Northwest Texas Hospital, Dr.
B. R. Jones stated: "the Executive Boards in our other hospital are completely
appointed by the Administration; we have sought to avoid this...." Since
this is not the case at St. Anthony's Hospital, we would like to make it clear
how the Executive Committee at St. Anthony's is selected.
The Constitution of the Medical and Dental staff of St. Anthony's Hospital,
adopted May 2, 1965, Article VII, Section II, Subsection 3 states: "The
Executive Committee shall consist of the President of the Medical and Dental
Staff (Chairman), the President-elect (Secretary), the Chief of the Department
of Surgery, the Chief of the Department of Medicine, the Chief of the Depart-
ment of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Chief of the Department of Pediatrics,
and two members appointed by the Governing Board."
Article VII, Section I, Subsection 1 states: "The officers of the Medical and
Dental Staff shall be the President, the President-elect, and the Secretary.
These officers shall be elected at the annual meeting of the Staff."
Article V, Section ITI, Subsection 1 states: "Each department shall be organ-
ized and a Chief appointed annually by the Governing Board on recommendation
of the Executive Committee."
Therefore, the Executive Committee consists of eight members: two are elected
by the hospital staff, four are selected by the outgoing Executive Committee
(and their terms of office are limited to 3 years) and only two are appointed
by the Administration--and, in actual practice, one of these latter two has in
each instance been the immediate past president of the staff, a doctor origin-
ally placed on the committee by the medical staff. Consequently, at least

The present Chief of Staff would like to emphatically state that the Hospital
Administration exerted no influence in the selection of the doctors presently
serving as Chiefs of the four departments of the staff.
