<p>December 29, 1967<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Dr. Adrian Kantrowitz<lb />Maimonides Medical Center<lb />4802 10th Avenue<lb />Brooklyn, New York 11219<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Dear Adrian<lb /><lb />Your program, personality, enthusiasm coincide so much with mine,<lb />that I cannot but feel already part of your organization. I know<lb />that your efforts will lead to accomplishments and I believe that<lb />I would be able to energize this progress, both ih the laboratory<lb />and clinic. Clarence Dennis was most encouraging and agrees that<lb />I would complement your team.<lb /><lb />As far as details of my possible affiliation 4s concerned we are<lb />standing not far apart. I do feel that being isolated to the.<lb />peripheral vascular area, at least until the transplant program<lb />comes into being would be somewhat restrictive. Perhaps a rotation<lb />of the cardiovaseular material in between all those interested<lb />would be a better solution, and more exciting for everyone. I<lb />certainly would be able to organize a good coronary arteriography<lb />unit and myocardial revaseularization effort f.e. I would like<lb />to restrict myself to areas of special interest. I could not be<lb />of any economic threat or otherwise to our cardiac colleague,<lb />but I would hate to see go to waste all the cardio-thoracie experience<lb />of the past years, and especially the past two years. I of course<lb />assume that you would want me on a team as partner in the elinical-<lb />experimental procedures. such as the kidney, liver, cardiac grafts,<lb />etc., all that requires so much effort.<lb /><lb />I have studied the economie situation as to my move and living in<lb />New York. My present income is approximately $65,000 a year and<lb />I of course want to sacrifice this for a full-time appointment. I<lb />am being offered $35,000 to direct full-time a cardiothoracic.<lb />university program in Texas, I.am however more excited about helping<lb />you direct a functioning laboratory in addition to clinical work as<lb />you suggest. A salary of $3,000 to $3,300 monthly would be closer<lb />to my requirements of living in New York, to educate five children,<lb />four of whom are in school.<lb /><lb />I hope that we may be able to find a formula for the NIH as I would<lb />be chagrined if any material consideration should interfere with my<lb />strong desire to help your effort, and our mutual scientific interests.<lb /></p>

<p>Dr. Adrian Kantrowitz<lb /><lb />2<lb /><lb />Dec. 29, 1967<lb /><lb />Consultation work for some scientific firms f.e. is apparently<lb />accepted by the NIH, perhaps Maimonides and Clarence Dennis may<lb />want to pitch in and Clarence may advise us.<lb /><lb />I again wish to say how natural our partnership appears to me; to<lb />resolve problems in the laboratory, apply them in the operating<lb />theater and clinic is my most ardent desire. I will appreciate<lb />your thoughts on the above, I am sure that you will understand that<lb />my move to New York would be quite consequential.<lb /><lb />Sincerely<lb /><lb />Karel B. Absolon, M.D.<lb /><lb />KBA:bc<lb /></p>
