<p>January 2, 1968<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Dr. Adrian. Kantrowitz<lb />Director and Professor of Surgery<lb />Maimonides Medical Center<lb />4802 10th Avenue<lb />Brooklyn, New York 11219<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Dear Adrian<lb /><lb />Your program, personality, enthusiasm coincide so much with mine,<lb />that I cannot but feel already part of your organization. I know<lb />that your efforts will lead to accomplishments and I believe that<lb />I would be able to energize this progress in the laboratory, and<lb />clinic, and the literature. Dr. Clarence Dennis was most encouraging<lb />on the phone and agrees that I would complement your team.<lb /><lb />As far as details of my possible affilliation is concerned we are<lb />standing not far apart. I do feel that being isolated to the<lb />peripheral vascular eras at least until the transriant program<lb />comes into being would be somewhat restrictive. Perhaps a rotation<lb />of the cardiovascular material in between all those interested<lb />would be a better solution, and more exciting for everyone, There<lb />are a few problems that I would like to attack, such as transpositions -<lb />coronary anomalies - the usual defects do not ore sent a challenge.<lb /><lb />I certainly would. be able to organize f.e, a good coronary<lb />ay vareeer aphy unit and coronary endarectomy effort. As you know, this<lb />was my early interest and now I have a few elinical tases with<lb />ecovery, one last week, I would like to restrict myself to<lb />areas of special interest. It could not be of any economic threat<lb />or otherwise to our cardiac cobleague, but I would hate to see go<lb />to waste all the cardio-thoracic experience of the. past years, and<lb />especially the past two years, I of course assume that we would<lb />be partners on a team in the clinical-experimental procedures such<lb />as the kidney, liver, cardiac grafts, etc., all that requires so<lb />much effort.<lb /><lb />I have studied the economic situation as to my move and living in<lb />New York, My present income is approximately $65,000 a year and<lb />I of course want to sacrifice this for a fulietine appointment. I<lb />am being offered $35,000 to direct full-time a cardio-thoracic<lb />university program in Texas, I am however more excited about<lb />helping you direct a functioning laboratory in addition to clinical<lb /></p>

<p>Dr. Adrian Kantrowitz<lb /><lb />2<lb /><lb />January 2, 1966<lb /><lb />work as you suggest. A salary of $35,000 to $40,000 yearly would<lb />be closer to my requirements of living in New York, to educate<lb />five children, four of whom are in school.<lb /><lb />I hope that we may be able to find a formula for the NIH as I would<lb />be chagrined if any material consideration should interfere with<lb />my strong desire to help your effort, and our mutual scientific<lb />interests. Consultation work for some scientific firms f.e. is<lb />apparently accepted by the NIHs perhaps Maimonides and the<lb />University may want te pitch in with more solid "hard core money"<lb />supplemented with NIH and or private patient funds, putting my<lb />Salary on a more solid footing, a career research award perhi::s<lb />may be the solution, this I am told can be supplemented, Clarence<lb />whose opinion I esteem so much may advise us.<lb /><lb />i again wish to say how natural our partnership appears to mo; to<lb />resolve problems in the laboratory, apply them in the operating<lb />theater and clinic is my most ardent desire, Is there a University<lb />Press avallable to you? I have one monograph ready for printing<lb />and Billroth's biography, is in progress. I will appreciate your<lb />thoughts on the above, I am sure that you will understand that my<lb />move. to New York would be quite consequential. I realize that it is<lb />a risk for both of us; I shall take it if you will.<lb /><lb />Kindest regards to your good wife!<lb /><lb />Sincerely<lb /><lb />Karel B. Absolon, M.D.<lb /><lb />KBA:bc<lb /><lb />CC: Drs Clarence Dennis<lb /></p>
