<p>February 9, 1968<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Dr. Rudolf Nissen<lb />Professor of Surgery<lb />Notnenweg 31<lb />Basel, Switzerland<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Dear Dr. Nissen<lb /><lb />Enclosed is the reprint you requested. Could I ask you for the<lb />following information: (1) What happened to the case of bronchiectasis<lb />on. whom you performed the first pneumonectomy? If I recall correctly<lb />you have used the tourniquet technique. (2) I am writing a<lb />biography of Billroth, not a small task - I must admit, but I<lb />assembled some good material - including T.B's originals and<lb />handwritten memorabila, etc. I cannot put my hands on Billroth's<lb />thesis (Berlin 1852, De natura et causa pulmonum affectionis, etc.).<lb />Does the Basel library have it? Billroth might have sent a copy to<lb />His, and Basel might have absorbed his library. Could you ask<lb />someone to look it up? I would appreciate it very much. It is the<lb />only hiatus that I have in his bibliography.<lb /><lb />Would you be interested to visit us and deliver one to two addresses<lb />to our Surgical Society on the topic of your choosing? You of<lb />eourse could dictate your conditions, and the conditions are a<lb />priori acceptable to us. The attendance at such meetings is approxi-<lb />mately 200 people. The past lecturers were Dr's. Ochsner, Wangensteen,<lb />etc.<lb /><lb />Very truly yours<lb /><lb />Karel B. Absolon, M.D.,Ph.D.<lb /><lb />KBA:bc<lb /><lb />Enc.<lb /></p>
