<p>May 15, 1968<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Dr. H. F. Lenhardt, Director of Medical Affairs<lb />Maricopa County General Hospital<lb />3435 West Durango St.<lb />Phoenix, Arizona<lb /><lb />Dear Harry:<lb /><lb />I was quite surprised when I found out from the Woodward agency<lb />that you are now Director of the Mericopa County General Hospital.<lb />I have left Minnesota just when things started crumbling, I was an<lb />assistant professor, and it appeared to me that I had little chance<lb />for advancement. In Amarillo I started open heart work and also have<lb />the directorship of the experimental laboratory, where I work on or-<lb />gan preservation and its physiology. Even though I am pretty success-<lb />ful in these endeavors, I miss teaching and the organizational activity<lb />pertaining to interns and residents. To do research work and practice<lb />is also becoming more difficult with no residents.<lb /><lb />My major publication endeavor in addition to the few publica-<lb />tions in press as indicated in my curriculum, is a biography of<lb />T. Billroth in two volumes, which I hope will be my major work in<lb />this direction.<lb /><lb />In case my affiliation should be of interest to you and your<lb />institution, I would appreciate knowing some details on:<lb />(1). The number of interns and residents.<lb />(2). Research facilities (physical) and funding.<lb />(3). Pediatric, cardio-thoracic (open heart) program.<lb /><lb />You know that I am well founded in general, cardiothoracic, in-<lb />cluding open heart and pediatric surgery, thus rather versatile. The<lb />appended bibliography should suggest to you my past research interests.<lb />Drs. Wangensteen, C. W. Lillehei, of course, would be glad to serve as<lb />references.<lb /><lb />I hope that Kitty likes Arizona, and that she is as chippery<lb />as ever.<lb /><lb />Best personal regards!<lb /><lb />Sincerely,<lb /><lb />KBA:elg Karel B. Absolon, M.D.<lb /></p>
