<p>October 25, 1968<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Ward Griffen, MD.<lb />Professor of Surgery<lb />University of Kentucky<lb />Lexington, Kentucky 40506<lb /><lb />Dear Wardo:<lb /><lb />Both Mary and I were sorry we missed you in Atlantic City.<lb />You did not miss very much; the meetings were just fair.<lb /><lb />At a recent panel discussion, in which I participated with<lb />Heimlich at Washington, I presented two cases of esophageal<lb />stricturein Epidernolysis Bullesa dystroph in two children, in<lb />whom I replaced the whole esophagus with a colonic graft (upper<lb />anastomosis in the neck). Both children, who were terribly de-<lb />bilitated, have a very good result. Heimlich talked on his nice<lb />modification on the Jeanu operation. He made a statement to me,<lb />that the small bowel is more sensitive to acid-peptic activity<lb />to lower down you go, the colon being, therefore, more sensitive<lb />that the ileum, the ileum more than the jejunum. This surprised<lb />me, as I always believe exactly the opposite. What were your<lb />results experimentally and clinically? Is it true that ileal<lb />and colonic interposition of the lower esophagus is out? I have<lb />little long-term experience with it.<lb /><lb />I had fun finishing a movie on coronary artery replacement<lb />with a saphenous graft; I have now a good series of patients with<lb />direct coronary construction.<lb /><lb />When are you going to stop by?<lb /><lb />Love to your family from all of us,<lb /><lb />KBA:elg Karl B. Absolon, MD.<lb /></p>
