Dear Prof. Absolon,
Dr. Emil Coufalik who is at present attached to the Department of Neo-Natology at
the University College Hospital, Chenies Mews, London is an applicant for the post
of Consultant Paediatrician in thie hospital and has given your name as a referee.
This post is virtually a whole-time one in that nine-elevenths of his time, on a
notional sessional basis, will be required for the discharge of his responsibilities
in charge of a Special Care Neo-Natal Unit. The reamining two-elevenths would br
allowed to him to engage in private practice.
I should be glad if you could spare the time to let me have a detailed profile of
his capabilities to discharge this post with special regard to the following matters:-
(a) Clinical Work
(b) Teaching and Practical
(c) Administration and Organisation
(d) Research
(e) Relations with Personnel
In order to assist you I set out the following details about the hospital.
It is a new Maternity Hospital opened in July 1967 with 183 Maternity beds, 58
gynaecological beds, and 51 cots i. wt eigen Care Unit. It is also a teaching
hospital with medical attachments to the two Medical Schools in Dublin and is in
addition a nurse training school for both Sask I and Part II examinations. The
annual utes of deliveries for last year was 5,572. The number of admiss ions to the
Baby Unit was 1,151. The hospital also provides clinics daily for babies in the post
natal period, i.e. up to six weeks. The holder of this post would also
ine check of babies born but not referred to the Special Care Unit.
