<p>September 7, 1966<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />William H. Muller, Jr., M,D<lb />Univ. of Virginia Med. Center<lb />Charlottesville, Virginia<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Dear Harry<lb /><lb />It was so nice to hear from you. I arrived here in November;<lb />it was quite exciting to set up the open heart program. Unfortunately<lb />there are no "livers" over here and I miss teaching and serious<lb />research. The climate over here is ideal unlike Texas but in spite<lb />of it there are a few sick people.<lb /><lb />The motive to leave was prompted by the im possibility to set<lb />up a food transplantation program, and too much interference, I<lb />could not get adequate research grant support, Dr. Wangensteen<lb />could not give me a service and after having been from 1952. at<lb />Minnesota I did not get my tenure, Dr. Wangensteen made an agreement<lb />with the dean not to promote anyone prior to his retirement. I thus<lb />had to cae rs of the future. Dr. Wangensteen did not want me to<lb />leave and I was quite sad about it. The only serious offers I<lb />got were second rate VA jobs and I just got impatient. The situation<lb />as far as I am concerned is better than a bad academic post.<lb /><lb />My wife and I will be staying at the Oxford Hotel in San<lb />Francisco and both of us hope to see you there. Please do contact<lb />us in case I should not see you "around".<lb /><lb />Sincerely<lb /><lb />Karel B. Absolon, M.D<lb /><lb />KBA:bc<lb /></p>
