Dear Karel:
I was most pleased to receive your recent letter and rephant enclo-
sures. We are having our usual share of growing pains down here,
primarily related to funding of our teaching hospital and convincing
the legislature that a new medical school getting started needs just
as much as a medical school already established. However, I be-
lieve we can almost see our way out of the woods now and I look
forward with great hopefulness to the future, Dr, Leo Cuello just
recently joined us to set up the open-heart surgery program. He
seems quite enthused by the opportunity, although the strictures of
getting people and equipment to get started would plague even tee C
patient man. We had planned to start our first pilot class this
coming fall, but have had to postpone opening our school until fall
of 1968.
I am pleased to hear that things have gone well for you and Mary in
Amarillo. I have become quite fond of San Antonio. Your coronary
work sounds quite interesting. Perhaps when I see you in Minneapolis
we can talk about having you down for a lecture or two, perhaps make
a short vacation trip for Mary and the family away from the colder
climate of Amarillo.
I'm still hobbling around with a cast on my leg. I just this past week
had it shortened down so that I can now bend my knee and get around
with a cane. It is now more of a nuisance than anything bordering on
serious physical impairment.
I shall look forward to seeing you in Minneapolis in a few days.
