My dear Colleague;
Dr. Wangensteen will retire as Chairman of the Department of Surgery July of
1967. A meeting of former Residents (and present Staff) of the Department is
planned for May 4th, 5th and 6th, 1967 at the University of Minnesota Medical
School to do honor to him.
On Thursday evening, May 4th a dinner will be held in the Main Ballroom of the
Coffman Memorial Union to which you and your wife are cordially invited, Upon
that occasion a bronze bust honoring Dr, Wangensteen will be presented to the
Medical School, It is to be placed in a Medical School Research Building, the
plans for which are under discussion.
On Friday evening a stag dinner is to be held at the Town and Country Club in
St. Paul, A dance will follow the dinner, We anticipate that this gathering of
former Residents will savor an evening of old remembrances abetted by, you
can be sure, excellent natural talent from an appropriate Master of Ceremonies,
At this time, a silver plate engraved with the names of those who have subscribed
for this evening of remembrances will be presented to Dr. Wangensteen, Please
sign the enclosed card with the signature you desire on the platter.
During Friday and for Saturday morning an educational program is being
developed, We hope to have time for about 20 talks, each of 20 minutes duration
covering topics by former or current Residents. Manuscripts from these pre-
sentations will comprise a Festchrift issue of SURGERY published by C. V. Mosby
Company, Plans also call for an Owen H, Wangensteen Memorial Issue of
Surgical Clinics of North America in the Fall of 1967, The twenty articles
contained therein will represent additional contributions by Dr. Wangensteen's
former Residents as well as those in training, We encourage your participation,
Abstracts for the presentation or publications should be no longer than 500 words
in length, They are due no later than August 1, 1966.
Because of the detailed nature of arrangements and the expenses likely to be
incurred for these events, we request definite indication of your anticipated

attendance. An advance payment of twenty (20) dollars will ensure your name on
the platter and reserve a place for you at these affairs.
