The Declaration of Geneva was intended to update the<lb />Oath of Hippocrates, which was no longer suited to modern<lb />conditions. Of interest is the fact that the World Medical Asso-<lb />ciation considered this short Declaration to be a more significant<lb />statement of medical ethics than the succeeding International<lb />Code of Medical Ethics. The words in italics were added to the<lb />Declaration in 1968.<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />Charles G. Rob, M.D.<lb /><lb />Charles G. Rob, M.D., professor of surgery at the East Carolina<lb />University School of Medicine, is internationally known for the<lb />development of pioneer techniques in vascular surgery. He joined<lb />the ECU medical faculty in 1978 after retiring from the University<lb />of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, where he was<lb />professor and chairman of the Department of Surgery for 17 years.<lb /><lb />Dr. Robis an honorary fellow of the Surgical Society of Sweden,<lb />Venezuelan Surgical Society, Australasian Research Society,<lb />Association of Surgeons of India, Association of Surgeons of Great<lb />Britain and Ireland, and Academy of Medicine, Toronto. He holds<lb />honorary degrees from Trinity College, Ireland, and Hartwick<lb />College, Canada.<lb /><lb />In 1975 the International Surgical Society awarded Dr. Rob the<lb />Rene Leriche Prize for the most valuable work on the surgery of<lb />arteries, veins or the heart which had appeared in recent years.<lb /><lb />Dr. Rob has been president of the International Cardiovascular<lb />Society and vice president of the American Surgical Association.<lb />in 1980 he was chairman of the International Cardiovascular<lb />Society Meeting in Athens, Greece. He was guest speaker at the<lb />27th Congress of Soviet Surgeons in Moscow and the 1977<lb />International Surgical Society Meeting in Tokyo.<lb /><lb />He has been guest surgeon at hospitals and medical schools in<lb />Australia, Canada, England, Japan, New Zealand and throughout<lb />the United States. The author of nearly 200 publications in<lb />professional journals and textbooks, Dr. Rob was co-editor of<lb />Operative Surgery, an 18 volume reference series for surgeons.<lb /><lb />A native of Weybridge, England, Dr. Rob received his medical<lb />degree from Cambridge University in 1937 and completed his<lb />postgraduate training at St. Thomas's Hospital, London. He served<lb />as professor of surgery at the University of London before coming<lb />to the United States in 1960 to accept appointment as chairman of<lb />surgery at the University of Rochester School of Medicine.<lb /><lb />In addition to teaching and patient care responsibilities here at<lb />the School of Medicine, Dr. Rob is director of the school�?Ts vascular<lb />laboratory. He has also been active in the development of the<lb />regional program for emergency medical services.<lb /><lb />The School of Medicine students, staff and faculty admire Dr.<lb />Rob for his distinguished accomplishments as a medical scientist,<lb />his superb qualities as medical educator, his devoted service and<lb />skills as surgeon par excellence and his charming manner.<lb /><lb />4<lb />.<lb /><lb />ow<lb /><lb /></p>
