The Declaration of Geneva was intended to update theOath of Hippocrates, which was no longer suited to modernconditions. Of interest is the fact that the World Medical Asso-ciation considered this short Declaration to be a more significantstatement of medical ethics than the succeeding InternationalCode of Medical Ethics. Charles G. Rob, M.D.Charles G. Rob, M.D., professor of surgery at the East CarolinaUniversity School of Medicine, is internationally known for thedevelopment of pioneer techniques in vascular surgery. He joinedthe ECU medical faculty in 1978 after retiring from the Universityof Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, where he wasprofessor and chairman of the Department of Surgery for 17 years.Dr. Robis an honorary fellow of the Surgical Society of Sweden,Venezuelan Surgical Society, Australasian Research Society,Association of Surgeons of India, Association of Surgeons of GreatBritain and Ireland, and Academy of Medicine, Toronto. He holdshonorary degrees from Trinity College, Ireland, and HartwickCollege, Canada.In 1975 the International Surgical Society awarded Dr. Rob theRene Leriche Prize for the most valuable work on the surgery ofarteries, veins or the heart which had appeared in recent years.Dr. Rob has been president of the International CardiovascularSociety and vice president of the American Surgical Association.in 1980 he was chairman of the International CardiovascularSociety Meeting in Athens, Greece. He was guest speaker at the27th Congress of Soviet Surgeons in Moscow and the 1977International Surgical Society Meeting in Tokyo.He has been guest surgeon at hospitals and medical schools inAustralia, Canada, England, Japan, New Zealand and throughoutthe United States. The author of nearly 200 publications inprofessional journals and textbooks, Dr. Rob was co-editor ofOperative Surgery, an 18 volume reference series for surgeons.A native of Weybridge, England, Dr. Rob received his medicaldegree from Cambridge University in 1937 and completed hispostgraduate training at St. Thomas's Hospital, London. He servedas professor of surgery at the University of London before comingto the United States in 1960 to accept appointment as chairman ofsurgery at the University of Rochester School of Medicine.In addition to teaching and patient care responsibilities here atthe School of Medicine, Dr. Rob is director of the school�?Ts vascularlaboratory.
