West Virginia vs. East Carolina
West Virginia looks to rebound from
its second loss of the 1982 campaign
as it hosts East Carolina at Moun-
taineer Field. A crowd which could be
in excess of 50,000 is expected for
the contest, which matches two
squads who were involved with shut-
outs a week ago.
The Mountaineers gained 39 yards
more than Penn State and picked up
21 first downs to the Nittany Lions'
1 8; but WVU was nonetheless
shutout 24-0 by the visitors from the
north. At the same time, East Carolina
was piling up over 300 yards rushing
on Illinois State in the process of re-
cording a 21-0 victory. The Pirates
enter this week's contest 4-3; the
Mountaineers are 5-2.

Talley Plays With ''Controlled Madness''

After toiling for the Mountaineers for
the past-four years, West Virginia line-
backer Darryl Talley is finally getting
the recognition for himself and his
team that both so rightly deserve.
Sports Illustrated named Talley its
"Player of the Week" for his
possessed performance against
Boston College earlier this month,
making 1 1 tackles and assisting on
five others in WVU's 20-1 3 victory.
Another national publication, Inside
Sports, featured the 6-4, 21 0pounder in a feature article entitled
"Bad Dudes."
ESPN, the total sports network, se-
lected him as its Player of the Game
against Pitt. He was later tabbed as
the network's Amateur Athlete of the
Week.
"I think it has been good recognition
for me," Talley says. "I'm happy and
thankful for it. The guy doing the story
on "Bad Dudes" took me to a park,
took all these pictures and told me
that it was on the five most aggres-
sive guys in sports."

since a freshman, Talley finished
second to fellow linebacker and friend
Dennis Fowlkes in 1980 in total
tackles (150 to 1 27). Last year,
however, the order was reversed as
Talley edged out Fowlkes 1 39 to
120 in total tackles on the team.
Both players agree that the
competition pushes them to play
better.
"It's sort of a friendly rivalry to see
who can get the most hits in a game,"
Fowlkes says.
"We're always trying to make each
other better," Talley says. "Before I
hurt my shoulder a couple of years
ago, I didn't like lifting weights, but I
had to lift so that I could play again. I
started to hang around with Dennis,
and he likes to lift because he use to
run around with Jeff Seals, and Seals
liked to lift.
"Dennis started to get me lifting,"
continues Talley, "and then it got to
where I was just as strong as Dennis.
Now we have a competition between
us so if he goes into the weight room
and lifts 300 lbs. five times, I've got
to do it five times. If he does 315 four
times, I've got to do it four times. And
if I do it, he does it. We used that to
push each other, and eventually I got
a lot stronger than I've ever been."
The friendly jockeying doesn't stop
in the weight room but continues right
out onto the field. When the Moun-
taineers traveled to Oklahoma earlier
this fall, Talley says he felt sick and
wasn't playing well.
"But I refused to come off that
field," Talley states. "I wanted to play
that game bad. But Dennis said, 'You
better start playing, because you're
not playing like the Darryl Talley I
know. You're playing like a bum.'
"Dennis said that right in the middle
of the game," adds Talley. "He kept
me going when everything seemed
like it was going wrong."
As for playing style, one might call
Talley's "mongrel." He says he
watches a lot of players and
incorporates their techniques into his.
"Ted Hendricks-that man can do
something," marvels Talley. "He's
big, he's agile, and he can do a lot of
things with his body so well that I'd
like to be able to do.
"And I like the w-;iv Jack Tatum hits
people," Talley adds. "He hits them
aggressively
and
within
the
boundaries of the game.He just plays
good, hard, clean football.
"I've read his book three times, I
think. Once for class, and twice for
myself. Each time I read it, I got
something different out of it. The guy
is totally not like everybody says he
is. People make him out to be some
hard, Pirate type character with no
heart or anything. He's actually a real
person, with human feelings."
Besides Hendricks and Tatum,
Talley likes to observe his peers.
"When I was a freshman, I had the
chance to play with Delbert Fowler,"
he recalls. "He taught me how to
throw a forearm. He was one of the
best I'd seen. He could throw one
and knock a tight end or a tackle to
his knees.
"I watched the way (Pitt's) Hugh
Green and Ricky Jackson played,"
continues Talley, "and I learned from
them the different ways to use their
hands and forearms and at what times
not to.
"And at the same time, I was out
competing against them and trying to
outplay them."

Don Nehlen
Head Football Coach
In just two years, Don Nehlen
has taken the West Vi rginia foot-
ball program from four consecutive
losing seasons to the Peach Bowl
Cham pionship. With that success
has come the kind of national
attention that has put Mountaineer
football on the map as a Top 20
team and Don Nehlen in the spot-
light as one of the nation's premier
coaches.
In his initial season here, Nehlen
took a group of young, inexperi-
enced athletes whose numbers
had been trimmed due to several
key injuries and made drastic
im provements in a team that had
recorded four straight losing
seasons.
Along the way to a 6-6 slate,
West Virginia posted a landslide
win at Colorado State and back-to-
back road wins against Tem ple and
Rutgers. Nehlen gave evidence of
his coaching abilities and of a
Mountaineer team about to flex its
muscles.
And flex them it did in 1 981 . An
upset victory at Maryland si gnaled
the start of West Virginia's rise
to national prominence. The year
ended with quarterback Oliver
Luck the owner of many Moun-
taineer career records and the
team with an 8-3 record and a
Peach Bowl bid.
Thousands of WVU fans fol-
lowed their team to Atlanta, and
looked on as the Nehlen-prepared
Mountaineers stunned the nation
and de m o l ished the Florida
Gators, 26-6. West Virginia football

had arrived, and Don Nehlen was
leading the way.
Since his days as a quarterback
at Bowling Green in 1 955, Nehlen
has been associated with only one
losing season. In 1 958 he began
his coaching career as an assistant
coach at Mansfield (0 . ) Senior High
School. A year later he became head
coach at Canton South High School
where his teams finished 24-1 1 -2 in
fou r seasons.
In 1 963 Nehlen moved to the col-
legiate ranks as backfield coach at
Cincinnati under Chuck Studley.
The next season he returned to
Canton as head coach at Mc Kinley
High School and guided the Bull-
dogs to a 9-1 record and second
place in the state.
Nehlen returned to his alma
mater in 1 965 as defensive coor-
dinator under Bob Gipson. His
units yielded only 361 points in 28
games (12.9 average), recorded six
shutouts and finished 1 9-9.
Nehlen took over the reins at
Bowling Green in 1 968, guiding the
Falcons to a 53-35-4 record and
three second-place finishes in the
Mid-American Conference. His
1 975 team finished 8-3, Bowling
Green's best record in a decade.
He ranked 24th among active major
college head coaches.
His overall record as a college
head coach is 68-44-4. From
1 977-79, Nehlen served under Bo
Schembechler at Michigan. His
duties included working with the
offensive backs, quarterbacks,
receivers, and overseeing recruit-
ment. During his stay at Michigan,
the Wolverines played in two Rose
Bowls and a Gator Bowl.
The N ehlen coaching style
em phasizes the im portance of the
young m en in his progra m .
"Nobody is as im portant as my
players," he explains. " I 'll do
everything I can for the kids.
They're going to know they can
always count on me and that my
door is always open. In turn they
will know exactly what I expect
from them.
"My goal is to build a solid pro-
gram and do everything possible to
make sure our players graduate
from West Virginia. That's what
we're here for and I feel very strong
about that."
Nehlen's style on the field in-
cludes a Multiple I offense, a 5-2
defense, and a promise that his
teams "will play with enthusiasm
and dedication."
Nehlen, 46, was graduated from
Bowling Green in 1 958 with a
degree in education after a sucWEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
cessful football career. He quarter-
backed the Falcons to a 21 -2-4
record during the 1 955-57 cam-
paigns. He earned a master's
degree at Kent State University in
1 965.
He and his wife, the former
Merry Ann Chopson, are the
parents of two children-Danny
(2 1 ) and Vicky (1 9).

One of the standouts in the
Mountaineer secondary is right at
home in a Gold and Blue uniform-
Peterstown native Steve Newberry.
The junior defensive back has
been a Mountaineer defensive fix-
ture since his freshman year, when
he moved in to the starting lineup.
Since then, he's held his own, recording 36 tackles and three interceptions in 1982.
"I'm really proud of what I've accomplished; proud
because of what I've been able to contribute to the team
over the past two and a half seasons, and I'm very proud
of what we've done as a team-winning the Peach Bowl
and our season so far this year," Newberry says. "And
I'm especially proud to just be a Mountaineer. This is my
home state and I'm proud of West Virginia."
This season, Newberry can certainly be proud. He's
recorded 32 tackles, 27 of them unassisted; he has also
managed to lead the team in interceptions with three,
one of them a key catch against Virginia Tech.
"Our season so far? It's going great," he says en-
thusiastically. "The only problem with that is that it's
sometimes hard not to look ahead-to the next game, or
a bowl bid, or anything. We just have to remember to
keep things in perspective, and take things play by play,
qame by qame.This week it's East Carolina
"I just think about playing my position, doing my part
of the coverage, and taking part of my share of every
play. Beyond that, I don't worry much," he says. No
matter who the Mountaineers' opponent is, though
they'll have their minds on Steve Newberry.

When the Mountaineers wing
the ball downfield for a big play,
chances are Rich Hollins is on the
receiving end.
The talented wide receiver, a
native of Zanesville, Ohio, is third
on the Mountaineer squad this
season in receptions, having caught
11 passes for 238 yards. Those statistics don't tell the
whole story though; he's scored two touchdowns and
has been a part of many big plays, including the
Mountaineers longest scoring play, a 44-yard pass from
Jeff Hostetler against Richmond.
"It's hard for me to think of myself as being 'Mr. Big
Play'," Hollins says. "We don't design our offense so
that any one guy is constantly in the spotlight. I just run
my share of where I am in the patterns, and hopefully,
when the ball comes my way, the play will be
successful."
Success is not new to Hollins. A two-year player, he
caught 37 passes for 754 yards last season, moving into
the starting lineup after teammate Darrell Miller got
injured.
"For sure, Darrell's surgery gave me an opportunity
to play some more and to show what I could do," he
says. "Really, though, our offense is diverse enough to
give everyone an opportunity to do what he does well.
Just look at our receivers-there are always half a dozen
guys who are in contention to catch the ball."

know they are going to pay a
price when they run or catch a pass. We can't pre-
vent every pass from being caught but forcing a fum-
ble or a dropped pass is just as good from my
standpoint.

Q . Are you pleased with the pro-
gress the defense has made
this year?
Leslie Cook, Wheeling
A. I think our defense has made
great strides since we first ar-
rived in Morgantown but we still
can improve all parts of our de-
fense. I do think, however, the men on our defense
have been willing to pay the price and that's why we
have had some degree of success.
we are just trying to do our jobs.
I admit we do make too many
mistakes at times, but we have
been working real hard to try
and correct them. I think we
are going to have a much improved offensive line as
the season continues.
Q . Being just a sophomore and
having the success you have
had thus far, would you like a
chance to kick in pro ball?

A. I haven't really thought about it
much. I guess if I would get the
chance, I should at least give it
my best shot, but all L am wor-
ried about at this point in my
career are my education and helping the Moun-
taineers win a ·few more games.

Q. At times, the offense looks su-
perb, but at other times it sput-
ters. Why is this?

A. Offense is execution football
and mistakes can detract from
a good offense. I think you will
notice that in games we have
made just a few minor mistakes,
the offense has been able to
put points on the boards. However, when we make mistakes, it becomes very tough
for our defense to function because of its sophistica-
tion.

Dr. E. Gordon Gee, President
Gordon Gee is the first West Virginia
University president since 1939 to be
appointed from WVU's own ranks. H e
became t h e ri i neteenth president o f
WVU on November 1 6 , 1981, at the age
of 37.
In 1979, Dr. Gee came to WVU as the
tenth dean of the College of Law,
founded i n 1878 and the oldest of the
University's professional schools.
He was associate dean and pro-
fessor of law at Brigham Young Uni-
versity in Provo, Utah, his native state.
He is a specialist in labor law and was a
judicial Fellow and Senior Staff As-
sistant with the United States Supreme
Court in 1974-75.
Gee, p ronounced "Ghee," re-
ceived doctorate degrees in both
education and law from Columbia
University. His bachelor's degree was
awarded by the University of Utah
where he majored in history and En-
glish and served as assistant dean for
administration i n the College of Law in
1973-74.
At the U.S. Supreme Court, he work-
ed closely with Chief Justice Warren E.
Burger in developing a public employee
relations system for the Supreme
Court and the federal judiciary.
Dr. Gee was a Harlan Fiske Stone
Scholar and an International Fellow at
Columbia, where he also received a W.
K. Kellogg Fellowship for the study of
legal problems in educational institu-
tions. In 1977-78, he was a Mellon
Fellow at the Aspen Institute for Hu-
manistic Studies.
While serving as law dean at WVU,
he taught courses in labor law, collec-
tive bargaining, and legal problems in
education. He is the author or co-
author of six books and 21 articles and
monographs.
Dr. Gee is a member of the Adminis-
trative Conference Committee o n
Lawyer Competency appointed b y the
Chief Justice of the United States, a
delegate to the American Law Institute,
a member of the Administrative Con-
ference of the United States, and chair
of the Rhodes Scholarship Selection
Committee for West Virginia.
Fred Schaus, Director of Athletics
Fred A. Schaus, a former Moun-
taineer coach and an experienced ad-
minist rator, is in his second year as
director of intercollegiate athletics at
West Virginia University.
A native of Newark, Ohio, Schaus
graduated from WVU in 1949 after let-
tering t h ree years on the Mountaineer
basketball team, coached by Lee Pat-
ton. He was an honor student, captain
of the 1948 and 1949 squads, and was
elected president of the student body.
He later earned his master's degree
from WVU in 1 953.
Following graduation, he spent five
years playing professional basketball
before returning as head basketball
coach in 1 954. He coached the Moun-
taineers to a 146-37 record during his
six-year stint and still owns the best
winning percentage (.797) among the
West Virginia coaches.
Schaus, 57, coached the Mountain-
eers to six Southern Conference titles,

played i n the NCAA tournament on six
occasions and finished second in the
national championship in 1 959. H e
coached All-Americans H o t Rud Hund-
ley, Lloyd Sharrar and Jerry West.
Following his success at West
Virginia, Schaus became head coach of
the Los Angeles Lakers of the National
Basketball Association for seven years
and finished with a 315-245 profes-
sional record. He then became the
Lakers' general manager in 1967 and
proceeded to put together what many
have called the finest basketball team
ever to hit the court, and his efforts
were rewarded in 1972 as Los Angeles
won its first ever N BA World Cham-
pionship.
Schaus returned to collegiate coach-
ing in 1972 as head coach at Purdue,
compiling a six-year mark with the
Boilermakers of 105-59 (.640). He later
became Purdue's associate athletic
director in charge of facilities and
personnel i n 1978.

"The Pride of West Virginia"
Mountaineer Marching Band
It's Band Day at Mountaineer Field
and 5,000 area high school musicians
will join the Mountaineer Marching
Band for a spectacular halftime show.
The Mountaineer Marching Band,
which annually sponsors the colorful
extravaganza, is among the nation's
finest and most progressive university
bands. It has shown remarkable
success and growth over the past
decade, increasing in membership
from 96 in 1 97 1 to more than 300
in 1 982.
The band has performed before
more than 60 million people in the
past 1 1 years including the 1 972
1 975 and 1 98 1 Peach Bowls'
numerous NFL games and a halftim?
show for the West Virginia-Oklahoma
game in Norman in 1 9 7 8.
This fall the group has traveled to
the West Virginia-Pitt game in Pitts-
burgh and the West Virginia-Virginia
Tech game in Blacksburg. En route to
Blacksburg, the band made several
goodwill performances in southern
West Virginia.
The "Pride of West Virginia" has
1?2 FOOTBALL PROGRAM
developed its own fan club over the
years and alumni and fans are quick
to sing the praises of the Mountaineer
Marching Band. The band annually
cuts an album and tape of its most
popular tunes which is sold each year
through the WVU Foundation.
The band took the field this season
with 304 marching members and an
impressive staff under Director Don
Wilcox. The band marches one of the
most innovative percussion sections
in the country under percussion
coordinator Dave Satterfield. The silk
line has increased in number and new
custom-designed flags have been
purchased to enhance the visual
aspects of the band.
For the first time ever a female will
serve as a field conductor. Cara
_P?rterfield, a native of Martinsburg,
Joins Shepherdstown native John
Hendricks as a conductor.
Barbara Pope is in her second year
as a feature twirler and she is joined
by LaRon Langdale of Weirton.
The distinct sound of the Moun-
taineer Marching Band is a direct re-
flection of the teaching talents of the
applied mL!sic faculty of the College of
Creative Arts at West Virginia
University. A wealth of talented music
arrangers include WVU faculty
members and students as well as fine
arrangers around the country, all
whom provide the band with music
that is uniquely scored and adapted
for maximum impact outdoors.
The Mountaineer Marching Band
was first organized about 70 years
ago as an ROTC band, and it con-
tinued as an all male organization in
1 972.
Today, the band is open to any
student at West Virginia University. Its
membership encompasses nearly
every school at the University and the
groups accumulative grade point
average is better than 3.O. No
student receives financial assistance
or a scholarship from their direct
involvement with the band.
This group of talented young
musicians has an intense esprit de
corps and has earned its title of "THE
PRIDE OF WEST VIRGINIA . . . THE
MOUNTAINEER MARCHING BAND."

The Mountaineer Sports Network will broadcast every WVU football
game, home and away this fall. The network will carry all the exciting ac·
lion throughout West Virginia and into parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland,
Kentucky and Ohio.
Jack Fleming, the "Voice of the Mountaineers" for the past 29
years will call the play-by-play action while Woody O'Hara provides
color commentary. John McKinney serves as technical director of the
network and WAJR serves as the flagship station.
West Virginia football on radio begins 30-minutes prior to each
game with the Coaches Corner with Don Nehlen. The game broadcast
is sponsored by Stroh's, the West Virginia Coal Industry, Cabot Cor-
poration, Avis Rent-A-Car and West Virginia Welding Supply. Following
each game fans can hear reports direct from the WVU coaches and
players on the Locker Room Show, sponsored by Motorist Insurance.

In a significant breakthrough,
researchers with the West Virginia
University Agricultural and Forestry
Experiment Station have reported the
first successful cloning of an
American chestnut tree.
Forest scientist Franklin C. Cech
and research technician Roy N. Keys
accomplished the cloning.
With
the
techniques
they
commercially
the
developed,
important species could be resurrec-
ted from a single tree which is resis-
tant to the blight that has been felling
the chestnut for most of this century.
"Should a blight-resistant individual
be discovered or developed, it will be
important to have some means of
vegetative propagation to reproduce
the genotype of that individual in its
entirety," Dr. Cech said.
Seed-grown offspring combining the
genes of two parent trees, one
resistant and the other not, probably
wouldn't have the resistant trait.
"Grafting could be done with the
chestnut," Cech said. "But grafting is
expensive and the graft unions are
particularly sensitive to the blight.
Cuttings of an older tree also cannot
be grafted."
For these reasons, Cech and Keys
have concentrated on the propagation

process demands a high degree of
care and precision but, once sys-
temized, it could be carried out on a
large scale.
A small piece of tissue excised from
a chestnut tree is transferred through
a series of growing media with
different nutritional and hormonal
properties.
"The compounds of the food supply
cause the multiplying cells to change
into the various cells that make up
roots, leaves and other parts of a
tree, " Cech explained.
The result should be a plantlet ge-
netically identical to its parent and
ready for rooting in the soil.
Keys has successfully grown
several plantlets from American chest-
nut tissue.
"We can initiate top growth quite
readily with our present technique but
more work is needed to improve root
initiation and especially to learn how
to successfully transplant the rooted
plantlets," he said.
Until this century, chestnut trees
made up a fourth of the eastern hard-
wood forests. Some trees were
seven feet in diameter and reached
heights of 1 00 feet and more.
The blight, caused by a fungus, was
first noted in New York in 1 904 and
was found in Randolph County, West
Virginia, in 1 91 1 . By the 1 920's, few
large chestnut trees were left
standing in the eastern U.S. Today
only some 50 mature American
chestnuts are known, all of them
diseased.
The species would be virtually
extinct except that young trees
continue to start up from old roots,
which are not injured by the blight.
These trees rarely reach seed-bearing
age before the disease strikes.
Spread by wind, rain, birds and
possibly insects, spores of the fungus
enter a tree through a wound or
through cracks that appear naturally in
the bark as the tree matures. A fast-
growing canker then girdles the tree,
cutting off the sap flow.

Stadium I nformation
The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at West Vir-
ginia University is anxious to render maximum service to
patrons at Mountaineer Field.
ADVANCE TICKETS-Tickets for all home games are
on sale at the stadium ticket office at the north end of the
stadium complex.
AMBULANCE SERVICE -Ambulances are stationed
at Mountaineer Field for emergency services. They are
parked in the north parking lot behind the scoreboard and
in t h e facilities building parking area.
FIRST AID STATIONS-Two first aid stations are
available for fans at Mountaineer Field. They are located
on the concourse level adjacent to Aisle 123 on the west
side and Aisle 107 on the east side of the stadium.
LOST AND FO UND-The lost and found offices are
available for the convenience of fans at Mountaineer
Field. They are located adjacent to Aisle 103 on the east
side and Aisle 129 on the west side of the stadium.
CONCESSIONS-The refreshment service is pro-
vided for your convenience and enjoyment. Stands are
located in the concourse area in both the east and west
sides of the stadium. Concessions are operated by Amer-
ican Vending Company of Clarksburg.
PUBLIC ADDRESS SYSTEM- N o special announce-
merits are made over the stadium public address system
except in cases of gravest emergency. The public is asked
not to request t h e service.

USH ERS-Ushers at Mountaineer Field are there to
help fans in any way possible. Please ask them for help
finding your seat or to direct you to any part of the sta-
dium.
PARKING- Pre-paid parking i s available for fans
attending Mountaineer Field at numerous lots around the
stadium. Contact the Mountaineer Ticket Office for ad-
vance parking passes. Handicapped parking spaces are
available in the blue lot.
SEAT NUMBE RING SYSTEM-To make it all the
easier to find your seat, there are no "section" numbers
printed on your tickets, just aisle numbers. That elimi-
nates confusion. Simply go the level indicated on your
ticket, then proceed to your aisle number, your row and
your seat.
W H E E L CH AIR LOCATIONS-There are wheel chair
locations at Aisles 123, 125, 127 and 129 on the concourse
of the east side of the stadium and Aisles 103, 105, 107 and
109 of the west side.
