        <p>The Game Today<lb />West Virginia vs. East Carolina<lb />West Virginia looks to rebound from<lb />its second loss of the 1982 campaign<lb />as it hosts East Carolina at Moun-<lb />taineer Field. A crowd which could be<lb />in excess of 50,000 is expected for<lb />the contest, which matches two<lb />squads who were involved with shut-<lb />outs a week ago.<lb />The Mountaineers gained 39 yards<lb />more than Penn State and picked up<lb />21 first downs to the Nittany Lions'<lb />1 8; but WVU was nonetheless<lb />shutout 24-0 by the visitors from the<lb />north. At the same time, East Carolina<lb />was piling up over 300 yards rushing<lb />on Illinois State in the process of re-<lb />cording a 21-0 victory. The Pirates<lb />enter this week's contest 4-3; the<lb />Mountaineers are 5-2.<lb />"That was an awful good football<lb />team we played last week but we<lb />were our own worst enemy," recalls<lb />West Virginia head coach Don<lb />Nehlen. "I think Penn State knows<lb />they were in a football game, but we<lb />just couldn't seem to punch in there<lb />and score."<lb />Kevin White, a sophomore from Casa<lb />Nehlen states on the offensive side<lb />Grande, Ariz., gets his first collegiate<lb />of the football when he talks about<lb />start in this afternoon's contest against<lb />things to work on this week. <p>Talley Plays With ''Controlled Madness''<lb />By Mark Miner<lb /><lb />After toiling for the Mountaineers for<lb />the past-four years, West Virginia line-<lb />backer Darryl Talley is finally getting<lb />the recognition for himself and his<lb />team that both so rightly deserve.<lb />Sports Illustrated named Talley its<lb />"Player of the Week" for his<lb />possessed performance against<lb />Boston College earlier this month,<lb />making 1 1 tackles and assisting on<lb />five others in WVU's 20-1 3 victory.<lb />Another national publication, Inside<lb />Sports, featured the 6-4, 21 0pounder in a feature article entitled<lb />"Bad Dudes."<lb />ESPN, the total sports network, se-<lb />lected him as its Player of the Game<lb />against Pitt. He was later tabbed as<lb />the network's Amateur Athlete of the<lb />Week.<lb />"I think it has been good recognition<lb />for me," Talley says. "I'm happy and<lb />thankful for it. The guy doing the story<lb />on "Bad Dudes" took me to a park,<lb />took all these pictures and told me<lb />that it was on the five most aggres-<lb />sive guys in sports."<lb /><lb />1982 FOOTBALL PROGRAM<lb /><lb />of the game. He calls it a "controlled<lb />Talley's other honors this year<lb />,nadness" but adds that it is hard to<lb />include "Defensive Champion," which<lb />he has won four times for his play describe.<lb />"Every Saturday I come ready to<lb />against Maryland, Boston College, Pitt<lb />and Virginia Tech. The award is given play," says the native of East Cleve-<lb />land, Ohio. "Some people have to sit<lb />by the WVU coaches.<lb />"I can't really think about it," claims there concentrating and start shaking<lb />at everything. I'm more relaxed before<lb />Talley. "I can think about it once the<lb />season's over, about what I accom- the game. I visualize things I want to<lb />do-make an interception or a big hit<lb />plished, how I went about it, if I could<lb />or causing a fumble, but before the<lb />have gotten more, where I made<lb />mistakes. It bugs you to a point that game I don't have a care in the world.<lb />"The only time I get excited is when<lb />when it first comes out, you're happy,<lb />but afterward you can't worry about it I walk out the locker room door, and I<lb />because you have the next week to see the other team. It's like a cloud<lb />hits me. All you know is you want to<lb />get ready for.<lb />"You have to keep it in the frame- beat them as bad as you can. If a guy<lb />work of the defense," Talley is trying to block you, you always<lb />continues. "That's the biggest key to want to get off his block and beat him<lb />the whole thing. In certain plays, I've to the punch. You want to be in the<lb />got some responsibility to take on. middle of the action.<lb />"My blood pressure doesn't go<lb />After I carry out my assignment, I try<lb />to go further or beyond my assigned up-it may go down a bit. I don't<lb />know what it is, but it comes all of a<lb />area of responsibility."<lb />Although Talley plays with a fury on sudden."<lb />Talley's controlled madness has<lb />the field, he says the feeling doesn't<lb />really begin until right before the start<lb />(continued on page 7)<lb />5<lb /><lb /></p>

        <pb facs="00090604_0009" />
        <p>"Controlled Madness"<lb /><lb />(continued from page 5)<lb />spurred him to great heights. Playing<lb />since a freshman, Talley finished<lb />second to fellow linebacker and friend<lb />Dennis Fowlkes in 1980 in total<lb />tackles (150 to 1 27). Last year,<lb />however, the order was reversed as<lb />Talley edged out Fowlkes 1 39 to<lb />120 in total tackles on the team.<lb />Both players agree that the<lb />competition pushes them to play<lb />better.<lb />"It's sort of a friendly rivalry to see<lb />who can get the most hits in a game,"<lb />Fowlkes says.<lb />"We're always trying to make each<lb />other better," Talley says. "Before I<lb />hurt my shoulder a couple of years<lb />ago, I didn't like lifting weights, but I<lb />had to lift so that I could play again. I<lb />started to hang around with Dennis,<lb />and he likes to lift because he use to<lb />run around with Jeff Seals, and Seals<lb />liked to lift.<lb />"Dennis started to get me lifting,"<lb />continues Talley, "and then it got to<lb />where I was just as strong as Dennis.<lb />Now we have a competition between<lb />us so if he goes into the weight room<lb />and lifts 300 lbs. five times, I've got<lb /><lb />to do it five times. If he does 315 four<lb />times, I've got to do it four times. And<lb />if I do it, he does it. We used that to<lb />push each other, and eventually I got<lb />a lot stronger than I've ever been."<lb />The friendly jockeying doesn't stop<lb />in the weight room but continues right<lb />out onto the field. When the Moun-<lb />taineers traveled to Oklahoma earlier<lb />this fall, Talley says he felt sick and<lb />wasn't playing well.<lb />"But I refused to come off that<lb />field," Talley states. "I wanted to play<lb />that game bad. But Dennis said, 'You<lb />better start playing, because you're<lb />not playing like the Darryl Talley I<lb />know. You're playing like a bum.'<lb />"Dennis said that right in the middle<lb />of the game," adds Talley. "He kept<lb />me going when everything seemed<lb />like it was going wrong."<lb />As for playing style, one might call<lb />Talley's "mongrel." He says he<lb />watches a lot of players and<lb />incorporates their techniques into his.<lb />"Ted Hendricks-that man can do<lb />something," marvels Talley. "He's<lb />big, he's agile, and he can do a lot of<lb />things with his body so well that I'd<lb />like to be able to do.<lb />"And I like the w-;iv Jack Tatum hits<lb /><lb />people," Talley adds. "He hits them<lb />aggressively<lb />and<lb />within<lb />the<lb />boundaries of the game.He just plays<lb />good, hard, clean football.<lb />"I've read his book three times, I<lb />think. Once for class, and twice for<lb />myself. Each time I read it, I got<lb />something different out of it. The guy<lb />is totally not like everybody says he<lb />is. People make him out to be some<lb />hard, Pirate type character with no<lb />heart or anything. He's actually a real<lb />person, with human feelings."<lb />Besides Hendricks and Tatum,<lb />Talley likes to observe his peers.<lb />"When I was a freshman, I had the<lb />chance to play with Delbert Fowler,"<lb />he recalls. "He taught me how to<lb />throw a forearm. He was one of the<lb />best I'd seen. He could throw one<lb />and knock a tight end or a tackle to<lb />his knees.<lb />"I watched the way (Pitt's) Hugh<lb />Green and Ricky Jackson played,"<lb />continues Talley, "and I learned from<lb />them the different ways to use their<lb />hands and forearms and at what times<lb />not to.<lb />"And at the same time, I was out<lb />competing against them and trying to<lb />outplay them."<lb /><lb />Let our "team"<lb />tackle your hair<lb />problems!<lb />We have trained long and hard<lb />to defense against split ends,<lb />curling patterns, and all other major<lb />hair offenses.<lb />Call on us, we're tuff to beat!!<lb /><lb />Jc;sepA's fi;f;"StYusts<lb /><lb />731 CHESTNUT RIDGE ROAD - MORGANTOWN, W.         <p>Don Nehlen<lb /><lb />Head Football Coach<lb /><lb />In just two years, Don Nehlen<lb />has taken the West Vi rginia foot-<lb />ball program from four consecutive<lb />losing seasons to the Peach Bowl<lb />Cham pionship. With that success<lb />has come the kind of national<lb />attention that has put Mountaineer<lb />football on the map as a Top 20<lb />team and Don Nehlen in the spot-<lb />light as one of the nation's premier<lb />coaches.<lb />In his initial season here, Nehlen<lb />took a group of young, inexperi-<lb />enced athletes whose numbers<lb />had been trimmed due to several<lb />key injuries and made drastic<lb />im provements in a team that had<lb />recorded four straight losing<lb />seasons.<lb />Along the way to a 6-6 slate,<lb />West Virginia posted a landslide<lb />win at Colorado State and back-to-<lb />back road wins against Tem ple and<lb />Rutgers. Nehlen gave evidence of<lb />his coaching abilities and of a<lb />Mountaineer team about to flex its<lb />muscles.<lb />And flex them it did in 1 981 . An<lb />upset victory at Maryland si gnaled<lb />the start of West Virginia's rise<lb />to national prominence. The year<lb />ended with quarterback Oliver<lb />Luck the owner of many Moun-<lb />taineer career records and the<lb />team with an 8-3 record and a<lb />Peach Bowl bid.<lb />Thousands of WVU fans fol-<lb />lowed their team to Atlanta, and<lb />looked on as the Nehlen-prepared<lb />Mountaineers stunned the nation<lb />and de m o l ished the Florida<lb />Gators, 26-6. West Virginia football<lb />10<lb /><lb />had arrived, and Don Nehlen was<lb />leading the way.<lb />Since his days as a quarterback<lb />at Bowling Green in 1 955, Nehlen<lb />has been associated with only one<lb />losing season. In 1 958 he began<lb />his coaching career as an assistant<lb />coach at Mansfield (0 . ) Senior High<lb />School. A year later he became head<lb />coach at Canton South High School<lb />where his teams finished 24-1 1 -2 in<lb />fou r seasons.<lb />In 1 963 Nehlen moved to the col-<lb />legiate ranks as backfield coach at<lb />Cincinnati under Chuck Studley.<lb />The next season he returned to<lb />Canton as head coach at Mc Kinley<lb />High School and guided the Bull-<lb />dogs to a 9-1 record and second<lb />place in the state.<lb />Nehlen returned to his alma<lb />mater in 1 965 as defensive coor-<lb />dinator under Bob Gipson. His<lb />units yielded only 361 points in 28<lb />games (12.9 average), recorded six<lb />shutouts and finished 1 9-9.<lb />Nehlen took over the reins at<lb />Bowling Green in 1 968, guiding the<lb /><lb />Falcons to a 53-35-4 record and<lb />three second-place finishes in the<lb />Mid-American Conference. His<lb />1 975 team finished 8-3, Bowling<lb />Green's best record in a decade.<lb />He ranked 24th among active major<lb />college head coaches.<lb />His overall record as a college<lb />head coach is 68-44-4. From<lb />1 977-79, Nehlen served under Bo<lb />Schembechler at Michigan. His<lb />duties included working with the<lb />offensive backs, quarterbacks,<lb />receivers, and overseeing recruit-<lb />ment.         <p>**<lb /><lb />*<lb />*<lb />Mountaineer Stars ???<lb />i(<lb /><lb />Rich Hollins<lb /><lb />Sophomore/WR<lb />Zanesville, Ohio<lb /><lb />Steve Newberry<lb /><lb />Junior/DB<lb />Peterstown, W. Va.<lb />One of the standouts in the<lb />Mountaineer secondary is right at<lb />home in a Gold and Blue uniform-<lb />Peterstown native Steve Newberry.<lb />The junior defensive back has<lb />been a Mountaineer defensive fix-<lb />ture since his freshman year, when<lb />he moved in to the starting lineup.<lb />Since then, he's held his own, recording 36 tackles and three interceptions in 1982.<lb />"I'm really proud of what I've accomplished; proud<lb />because of what I've been able to contribute to the team<lb />over the past two and a half seasons, and I'm very proud<lb />of what we've done as a team-winning the Peach Bowl<lb />and our season so far this year," Newberry says. "And<lb />I'm especially proud to just be a Mountaineer. This is my<lb />home state and I'm proud of West Virginia."<lb />This season, Newberry can certainly be proud. He's<lb />recorded 32 tackles, 27 of them unassisted; he has also<lb />managed to lead the team in interceptions with three,<lb />one of them a key catch against Virginia Tech.<lb />"Our season so far? It's going great," he says en-<lb />thusiastically. "The only problem with that is that it's<lb />sometimes hard not to look ahead-to the next game, or<lb />a bowl bid, or anything. We just have to remember to<lb />keep things in perspective, and take things play by play,<lb />qame by qame.This week it's East Carolina<lb />"I just think about playing my position, doing my part<lb />of the coverage, and taking part of my share of every<lb />play. Beyond that, I don't worry much," he says. No<lb />matter who the Mountaineers' opponent is, though<lb />they'll have their minds on Steve Newberry.<lb />1982 FOOTBALL PROGRAM<lb /><lb />" . . . And it's Hostetler to<lb />Hollins for another long gain!"<lb />When the Mountaineers wing<lb />the ball downfield for a big play,<lb />chances are Rich Hollins is on the<lb />receiving end.<lb />The talented wide receiver, a<lb />native of Zanesville, Ohio, is third<lb />on the Mountaineer squad this<lb />season in receptions, having caught<lb />11 passes for 238 yards. Those statistics don't tell the<lb />whole story though; he's scored two touchdowns and<lb />has been a part of many big plays, including the<lb />Mountaineers longest scoring play, a 44-yard pass from<lb />Jeff Hostetler against Richmond.<lb />"It's hard for me to think of myself as being 'Mr. Big<lb />Play'," Hollins says. "We don't design our offense so<lb />that any one guy is constantly in the spotlight. I just run<lb />my share of where I am in the patterns, and hopefully,<lb />when the ball comes my way, the play will be<lb />successful."<lb />Success is not new to Hollins. A two-year player, he<lb />caught 37 passes for 754 yards last season, moving into<lb />the starting lineup after teammate Darrell Miller got<lb />injured.<lb />"For sure, Darrell's surgery gave me an opportunity<lb />to play some more and to show what I could do," he<lb />says. "Really, though, our offense is diverse enough to<lb />give everyone an opportunity to do what he does well.<lb />Just look at our receivers-there are always half a dozen<lb />guys who are in contention to catch the ball."<lb /><lb />25<lb /><lb /></p>

        <p>Mountaineer Scoop: Ask Them Yourself<lb />Compiled by Joe Boczek<lb /><lb />For Safety Tim Agee<lb />Q . You seem to be one of the<lb />hardest hitting defensive backs<lb />I have ever observed, have you<lb />always been that way?<lb />Al Wizba, Parkersburg<lb /><lb />For Offensive G uard Andre Gist<lb />Q. At times this season, the offen-<lb />sive line has been criticized.<lb />What is your opinion of the of-<lb />fensive line?<lb /><lb />Rich Exner, Wheeling<lb /><lb />A. Yes, I have always tried to be a<lb /><lb />A. Everyone has a job to do and<lb /><lb />For Defensive Back Steve Newberry<lb />Q. You have developed into a first<lb /><lb />For Kicker Paul Woodside<lb /><lb />hard hitter. When you play in the<lb />defensive backfield, you can't<lb />prevent every pass from being<lb />caught but you can make a re-<lb />ceiver think about catching the<lb />next one if you give him a jolt when he does make a<lb />catch.<lb /><lb />rate collegiate defensive back.<lb />What have you done since<lb />your days in high school to fos-<lb />ter such improvement?<lb /><lb />Terry Johnson, Morgantown<lb /><lb />A. I have tried to play very aggres-<lb /><lb />sive football on every down. I<lb />want the opposing players to<lb />know they are going to pay a<lb />price when they run or catch a pass. We can't pre-<lb />vent every pass from being caught but forcing a fum-<lb />ble or a dropped pass is just as good from my<lb />standpoint.<lb /><lb />For Defensive Coordinator Dennis Brown<lb />Q . Are you pleased with the pro-<lb />gress the defense has made<lb />this year?<lb />Leslie Cook, Wheeling<lb /><lb />A. I think our defense has made<lb /><lb />great strides since we first ar-<lb />rived in Morgantown but we still<lb />can improve all parts of our de-<lb />fense. I do think, however, the men on our defense<lb />have been willing to pay the price and that's why we<lb />have had some degree of success.<lb /><lb />we are just trying to do our jobs.<lb />I admit we do make too many<lb />mistakes at times, but we have<lb />been working real hard to try<lb />and correct them. I think we<lb />are going to have a much improved offensive line as<lb />the season continues.<lb /><lb />Q . Being just a sophomore and<lb />having the success you have<lb />had thus far, would you like a<lb />chance to kick in pro ball?<lb />Jerry Klein, Charleston<lb /><lb />A. I haven't really thought about it<lb /><lb />much. I guess if I would get the<lb />chance, I should at least give it<lb />my best shot, but all L am wor-<lb />ried about at this point in my<lb />career are my education and helping the Moun-<lb />taineers win a ·few more games.<lb /><lb />For Quarterback Coach Russ Jacques<lb />Q. At times, the offense looks su-<lb />perb, but at other times it sput-<lb />ters. Why is this?<lb /><lb />Mike Coyne, Bridgeport, Ohio<lb /><lb />A. Offense is execution football<lb /><lb />and mistakes can detract from<lb />a good offense. I think you will<lb />notice that in games we have<lb />made just a few minor mistakes,<lb />the offense has been able to<lb />put points on the boards. However, when we make mistakes, it becomes very tough<lb />for our defense to function because of its sophistica-<lb />tion.<lb /><lb />If you have a question you would like to ask a Mountaineer player or coach, write us<lb />at the Sports lnforamtion Office, P. 0.         <p>"The Pride of West Virginia"<lb /><lb />Mountaineer Marching Band<lb />It's Band Day at Mountaineer Field<lb />and 5,000 area high school musicians<lb />will join the Mountaineer Marching<lb />Band for a spectacular halftime show.<lb />The Mountaineer Marching Band,<lb />which annually sponsors the colorful<lb />extravaganza, is among the nation's<lb />finest and most progressive university<lb />bands. It has shown remarkable<lb />success and growth over the past<lb />decade, increasing in membership<lb />from 96 in 1 97 1 to more than 300<lb />in 1 982.<lb />The band has performed before<lb />more than 60 million people in the<lb />past 1 1 years including the 1 972<lb />1 975 and 1 98 1 Peach Bowls'<lb />numerous NFL games and a halftim?<lb />show for the West Virginia-Oklahoma<lb />game in Norman in 1 9 7 8.<lb />This fall the group has traveled to<lb />the West Virginia-Pitt game in Pitts-<lb />burgh and the West Virginia-Virginia<lb />Tech game in Blacksburg. En route to<lb />Blacksburg, the band made several<lb />goodwill performances in southern<lb />West Virginia.<lb />The "Pride of West Virginia" has<lb />1?2 FOOTBALL PROGRAM<lb /><lb />developed its own fan club over the<lb />years and alumni and fans are quick<lb />to sing the praises of the Mountaineer<lb />Marching Band. The band annually<lb />cuts an album and tape of its most<lb />popular tunes which is sold each year<lb />through the WVU Foundation.<lb />The band took the field this season<lb />with 304 marching members and an<lb />impressive staff under Director Don<lb />Wilcox. The band marches one of the<lb />most innovative percussion sections<lb />in the country under percussion<lb />coordinator Dave Satterfield. The silk<lb />line has increased in number and new<lb />custom-designed flags have been<lb />purchased to enhance the visual<lb />aspects of the band.<lb />For the first time ever a female will<lb />serve as a field conductor. Cara<lb />_P?rterfield, a native of Martinsburg,<lb />Joins Shepherdstown native John<lb />Hendricks as a conductor.<lb />Barbara Pope is in her second year<lb />as a feature twirler and she is joined<lb />by LaRon Langdale of Weirton.<lb />The distinct sound of the Moun-<lb />taineer Marching Band is a direct re-<lb /><lb />flection of the teaching talents of the<lb />applied mL!sic faculty of the College of<lb />Creative Arts at West Virginia<lb />University. A wealth of talented music<lb />arrangers include WVU faculty<lb />members and students as well as fine<lb />arrangers around the country, all<lb />whom provide the band with music<lb />that is uniquely scored and adapted<lb />for maximum impact outdoors.<lb />The Mountaineer Marching Band<lb />was first organized about 70 years<lb />ago as an ROTC band, and it con-<lb />tinued as an all male organization in<lb />1 972.<lb />Today, the band is open to any<lb />student at West Virginia University. Its<lb />membership encompasses nearly<lb />every school at the University and the<lb />groups accumulative grade point<lb />average is better than 3.O. No<lb />student receives financial assistance<lb />or a scholarship from their direct<lb />involvement with the band.<lb />This group of talented young<lb />musicians has an intense esprit de<lb />corps and has earned its title of "THE<lb />PRIDE OF WEST VIRGINIA . . . THE<lb />MOUNTAINEER MARCHING BAND."<lb />75<lb /><lb /></p>

One way is to look at the<lb />achievements of its students.<lb />West Virginia University has sent 19<lb />Rhodes Scholars to Oxford University in<lb />Great Britain, which is far more than most<lb />universities in neighboring states and which<lb />ranks WVU among the nation's top 40<lb />institutions.<lb />WVU also ranks among the top 7 percent<lb />of the nation's colleges and universities in<lb />the number of Merit Scholars enrolled. And<lb />WVU freshman students score higher than<lb />their counterparts across the country in<lb />the American College Testing Program.<lb />You can become a part of this impressive<lb />tradition by enrolling at WVU.         <p>WVU Forest Scientists<lb />Experiment With Cloning<lb /><lb />Franklin C. Cech (let!) and Roy N. Keys examine young chestnut clones.<lb />In a significant breakthrough,<lb />researchers with the West Virginia<lb />University Agricultural and Forestry<lb />Experiment Station have reported the<lb />first successful cloning of an<lb />American chestnut tree.<lb />Forest scientist Franklin C. Cech<lb />and research technician Roy N. Keys<lb />accomplished the cloning.<lb />With<lb />the<lb />techniques<lb />they<lb />commercially<lb />the<lb />developed,<lb /><lb />important species could be resurrec-<lb />ted from a single tree which is resis-<lb />tant to the blight that has been felling<lb />the chestnut for most of this century.<lb />"Should a blight-resistant individual<lb />be discovered or developed, it will be<lb />important to have some means of<lb />vegetative propagation to reproduce<lb />the genotype of that individual in its<lb />entirety," Dr. Cech said.<lb />Seed-grown offspring combining the<lb /><lb />genes of two parent trees, one<lb />resistant and the other not, probably<lb />wouldn't have the resistant trait.<lb />"Grafting could be done with the<lb />chestnut," Cech said. "But grafting is<lb />expensive and the graft unions are<lb />particularly sensitive to the blight.<lb />Cuttings of an older tree also cannot<lb />be grafted."<lb />For these reasons, Cech and Keys<lb />have concentrated on the propagation<lb />(continued on page 95)<lb /><lb />1982 FOOTBALL PROGRAM<lb /><lb />93<lb /><lb /></p>

        <p>Cloning<lb /><lb />ro A Good' 82Luck<lb /><lb />(continued from page 93)<lb />of chestnuts by tissue culture. The<lb />process demands a high degree of<lb />care and precision but, once sys-<lb />temized, it could be carried out on a<lb />large scale.<lb />A small piece of tissue excised from<lb />a chestnut tree is transferred through<lb />a series of growing media with<lb />different nutritional and hormonal<lb />properties.<lb />"The compounds of the food supply<lb />cause the multiplying cells to change<lb />into the various cells that make up<lb />roots, leaves and other parts of a<lb />tree, " Cech explained.<lb />The result should be a plantlet ge-<lb />netically identical to its parent and<lb />ready for rooting in the soil.<lb />Keys has successfully grown<lb />several plantlets from American chest-<lb />nut tissue.<lb />"We can initiate top growth quite<lb />readily with our present technique but<lb />more work is needed to improve root<lb />initiation and especially to learn how<lb />to successfully transplant the rooted<lb />plantlets," he said.<lb />Until this century, chestnut trees<lb />made up a fourth of the eastern hard-<lb />wood forests. Some trees were<lb />seven feet in diameter and reached<lb />heights of 1 00 feet and more.<lb />The blight, caused by a fungus, was<lb />first noted in New York in 1 904 and<lb />was found in Randolph County, West<lb />Virginia, in 1 91 1 . By the 1 920's, few<lb />large chestnut trees were left<lb />standing in the eastern U.S. Today<lb />only some 50 mature American<lb />chestnuts are known, all of them<lb />diseased.<lb />The species would be virtually<lb />extinct except that young trees<lb />continue to start up from old roots,<lb />which are not injured by the blight.<lb />These trees rarely reach seed-bearing<lb />age before the disease strikes.<lb />Spread by wind, rain, birds and<lb />possibly insects, spores of the fungus<lb />enter a tree through a wound or<lb />through cracks that appear naturally in<lb />the bark as the tree matures. A fast-<lb />growing canker then girdles the tree,<lb />cutting off the sap flow.<lb />For more information , please call<lb />Professor Franklin Cech at (304)<lb />293-34 1 1 (office) or at (304) 2920850 (home).<lb />1982 FOOTBALL PROGRAM<lb /><lb />NER<lb /><lb />?<lb /><lb />?<lb /><lb />?<lb /><lb />.,,<lb /><lb />?-<lb /><lb />M ou ntaineers<lb />FROM T H E STA F F O F<lb /><lb />MOU NTAI N LAI R<lb /><lb />"'lr\\fl \eJr.\f.lfoil r.-. f"\fl<lb /><lb />? ?
