<lb />Reproduced By<lb /><lb />INTRODUCTION<lb /><lb />This book presents examples of typical natural and man-<lb />made features of the coast of southern Sicily as they appear<lb />both from the air and from the ground. It is intended prin-<lb />arily for the use of photo-interpreters who may be engaged in<lb />preparation for future amphibious operations.<lb /><lb />It is designed to serve the following purposes:<lb /><lb />1. Presenting examples of beach, road and airport<lb />defenses used by Germans and Italians.<lb /><lb />2. Analyzing typical features of beaches, vegetat-<lb />fon and terrain in the Mediterranean Area.<lb /><lb />3. Acquainting the reader with the scope and<lb />accuracy of photographic intelligence.<lb /><lb />The book is divided into three parts. The annotated<lb />mosaics comprising the first section are copies of 20" x 2k"<lb />mosaics which were distributed to army and navy commands<lb />prior to Operation HUSKY. The second section of the book<lb />is made up of photographs on which are indicated the results<lb />of both aerial and ground observations over the area. The<lb />third section is a collection of vertical photographs of<lb />installations which have not been so confirmed, but which are<lb />particularly clear examples of Axis military practice.<lb /><lb />Vertical photographs appearing in this book are copies<lb />of operational pictures used for interpretation before and<lb />during the operation. They were selected from sorties flown<lb />by the RAF and AAF. Where photographs appear side by side<lb />on the same page they are intended for study by pocket ster-<lb /><lb />eoscopes. Ground photographs used were taken by Amphibious<lb />Force staff photographers.<lb /><lb />Ae: e KIRK,<lb />Rear Admiral, U. S. Navy,<lb />Commander Amphibious Force, Atlantic Fleet.<lb /><lb />U.S. Naval Photographic Science Laboratory<lb /><lb />fas<lb /><lb />P7o007G06<lb />4-44<lb /></p>
