AAs, HeG (Air Yoroe, Ground Crew)<lb /><lb />Captured : 0630, 10 July 1943 - 10 kilos down the coast from<lb />Scoglitti (inland).<lb /><lb />The prisoner had been wounded in the left arm an� in the left<lb />leg. First aid had been administered in the field and additional<lb />medical attention was being administered at Headqvarters.<lb /><lb />The prisoner was wearing a camouflaged jacket and a somewhat<lb />startled expression at the humane treatment by the Americans. 3<lb /><lb />He was one of 9 men located 8 or 10 kilometers SF of Scoglitti<lb />inland from the coast, the squad manned a beacom light and had one<lb />40mm cun, There had been 50 Germans in all around Seoclitti but<lb />others hed left and he knew nothing of their whereabouts.<lb /><lb />The prisoner had been in service 17 months, hed not served in<lb />Africa, but had been in Itely 6 months. 4 weeks previous to invasion<lb />he was sent to Sicily, 50 kilometers from Scoglitti (exact location<lb />not known) �= &amp; to 10 days prior to invasion he was transferred to<lb />COBB.<lb /><lb />When asked how Germans in Sicily, replied thet he had been<lb />one of the first to arrive so didn't know the total number.<lb /><lb />When esked wither the Germans had any tanks in Sicily �-<lb />replied yes, but since they arrived after him, he had no idea of the<lb />number; when asked to more:y approximate the number he casually<lb />end boastfully gave 900.<lb /><lb />As to the number of German Alroraft in Sicily he responded |<lb />negatively, stating that he had not seen any.<lb /><lb />"When asked whether all German Soldiers wore camouflaged uniforms;<lb />responded yes; coats.<lb /><lb /></p>

He had a very keen dislike for the Iteliuns and ree<lb />garded the Sicilians with only a slightly milder form of utter<lb />contempt, Remarked that Itelians make poor soldiers; when German<lb />give the command to advance the Italians say retreat; the Sieilians<lb />are a little better, _If Japs were here things would be much better.<lb /><lb />He stated that he didn't know we were coming but Suspected it<lb />by the heavy aerial bombings and then the naval bomberiment.<lb />Asked what he thought of Americans, said "Pretty good mam had<lb />Rugsiens had captured him they woulda have cut off his h<lb /><lb />Lester C.
