<lb />Eastern Bowl Story<lb /><lb />By JOE WHRITENOUR<lb />Bethlehem Globe-Times Sports Editor<lb /><lb />HOW MUCH OF AN ATTRACHION is North-<lb />eastern University, of Boston, against East Car-<lb />olina College, of Greenville, N. C., in Allentown<lb />today: That's the lineup for the 2nd annual<lb />Eastern Bowl football game, and the king-sized<lb />question bugging promoters Mike Roman and<lb />Irv Kreindel. Will fans turn out for such a con-<lb />test between two strange squads?<lb /><lb />Roman, who resides in Norristown, joined<lb />Kreindel, an Allentonian, in staging Game No. 1<lb />last season when West Chester demolished<lb />Hofstra, 46-12. The crowd, in spacious Allen-<lb />town School District Stadium, was announced<lb />at 3,000. Promoters wrote the thine off as a<lb />fair first effort and hoped for something better<lb />im: 63,<lb /><lb />Northeastern and East Carolina are unknown<lb />to Lehigh Valley fans, but there seems little<lb />reason to expect anything except interesting,<lb />capable performances. The Huskies from Boston<lb />are 8-0-0 with triumphs over Rhode Island,<lb />Bridgeport, Bates, American Ifternational,<lb />Springfield, New Hampshire, Merchant Marine<lb />Academy and Tufts.<lb /><lb />The Pirates from Carolina are 8-1-0 with the<lb />eight victories coming in a row following an<lb />opening loss to major college Richmond, 10-7.<lb />They have knocked off Wake Forest, Wofford,<lb />Presbyterian, ion, Western Carolina, The<lb />Citadel, Lenoir Rhyne and Tampa. The makings<lb />are there for a spirited North-South struggle.<lb /><lb />Another Soccer-Veteran Kicking Star. . .<lb />STUDENTS OF THE GAME will be given an<lb />opportunity to watch the single wing, as em-<lb />ployed by the Carolinians, go against the more -<lb />popular "T'' which coach Joe Zabilski brews in<lb />Boston. You don't see too many single wing<lb />clubs these days, something that may lure an<lb />extra spectator or two through the gates for a<lb />look at an old-fashioned hard-nosed offense.<lb /><lb />Clarence Stasavich, who coacnes Hast -Car-<lb />olina, has been out of action for quite a while<lb />after suffering a heart attack. The team is run by<lb />Odell Welborn, his assistant mentor, who'd like<lb />a triumph for sort of a get-well gift. Zabilski<lb />has a different present in mind. He'd like to<lb />send Stasavich the game ball autographed by<lb />all members of the winning - Northeastern -<lb />squad. All that fellow.<lb /><lb />Zabilski has an absentee problem of his own,<lb />a huge one, wth star fullback Bob Cappadona<lb />ineligible Dec. 14 under NCAA rules which pro- -<lb />hibit a transfer student in his first playing year<lb />from participating in post-season contests.<lb />Cappy wowed 'em this fall during the regular<lb />schedule, scoring 50 points and piling up 625<lb />yards rushing on 123 carries for an eye-popping<lb />o.l average.<lb /><lb />Cappadona's position may be filled by a boy<lb />named Maxine St. Victor, Jr., a native of Haiti<lb />known primarily for his kicking prowess. Like<lb />the Gogolak brothers, of Princeton and Cornell,<lb />he's a soccer veteran who boots off the side of<lb />his foot. He has a 47-yard field goal to his credit<lb />along with 27 extra points. At 6-foot-3, and<lb />weighing 227 pounds, he gets a lot of foot into<lb />the football.<lb /><lb />73&gt; Per Cent To Competing Schools. . -<lb /><lb />ROMAN AND KNEINDEL are hoping for a<lb />turnout somewhere near the 10,000 figure be-<lb />cause under NCAA regulations 75 per cent of<lb />the gross, after taxes, must go to the compet-<lb />ing schools. That doesn't leave too much loot<lb />for operational expenses and an outdoor event<lb />in this part of the country in mid-December is<lb />risky. The weatherman must cooperate. If it<lb />comes up snow, well, there's always 1964.<lb /><lb />The Eastern Bowl last season was played as<lb />the Cement Bowl, when West Chester and<lb />Hofstra competed, and the name was changed<lb />as part of a long-range hope that eventually<lb />the NCAA will recognize it as a small-college<lb />eastern regional sridiron playot. Chances of<lb />this sort of sanction are slim indeed if the '63<lb />presentation falls flat.<lb /><lb />A participating charity in this year's offering<lb />is the Lenigh Valley Brancm of the Cystic<lb />Fibrosis Foundation, which has accepted an<lb />offer to handle the program and retain advertis-<lb />ing revenue. No set amount can be earmarked for<lb />the foundation, wonder tiis sort of wlan but<lb />actually this may be the part of the venture<lb />carrying the least risk..<lb /><lb />Northeastern and East Carolina, according to<lb />their press representatives, are anxious to get in-<lb />to ASD Stadium and offer their pigskin version<lb />of the Civil] War. Tvl be North ve South "i<lb />vs single wing, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation<lb />vs illness and Roman-Kreindel vs the weather-<lb />man and the creditors. All aboard.<lb /><lb /></p>

Cabot Physical Education Center on North-<lb /><lb />eastern University's Boston, Massachusetts campus contains two gymnasiums,<lb />special exercise rooms, an indoor rifle range, offices and service areas, and a<lb />"eage', which is used for physical education programs and for indoor practice<lb /><lb />Sessions.<lb /><lb />Founded in 1898, Northeastern University<lb />has consistently followed an educational policy<lb />of seeking out community educational needs<lb />and then meeting these needs. It has not dup-<lb />licated programs offered by other institutions<lb />but has pioneered new types of educational<lb />service.<lb /><lb />Northeastern is chiefly known for its Co-<lb />operative Plan of Education, which was adopt-<lb />ed as an experiment in 1909. The experiment<lb />proved to be successful and is being expanded<lb />year by year. More than 8,000 students are<lb />currently enrolled in the various co-operative<lb />programs.<lb /><lb />Co-operative Education is basic to North-<lb />eastern's colleges of Engineering, Business<lb />Administration, E@ucation, Liberal Arts, Phar-<lb />macy, and next year Nursing - when the col-<lb />'lege is 'established. .''Co-op'', as it -is .cdlled, is<lb />also in the Graduate School in engineering and<lb />some of the-pure science programs.<lb /><lb />Under Northeastern's Co-operative Plan up-<lb />perclass students alternate periods of class-<lb />room instruction with practical experience on<lb />regular paying jobs in business, industry, and<lb />the professions.<lb /><lb />Northeastern has also pioneered evening<lb />education programs and adult education pro-<lb /><lb />grams.<lb />Growth and expansion have become syn-<lb />onymous with Northeastern in recent year. In<lb /><lb />1961, Dr. Asa S. Knowles, President, announced<lb />the greatest expansion program in the Univer-<lb />sity's history. He announced a $40 million Dia-<lb />mond Anniversary Development Program<lb />which, by 1973, is expected to double the size<lb />of the University's facilities, triple the size of<lb />its faculty, increase enrollments, and substan-<lb />tially expand the academic offerings.<lb /><lb />As part of this program the University has<lb />doubled the size of its main campus during the<lb />past few years from 22 acres to 43 acres. In<lb />addition, it has added three off-campus sites<lb />totalling nearly 60 additional acres.<lb /><lb />A suburban campus is currently under con-<lb />struction some 15 miles from the main campus,<lb />near the Route 128 industrial complex. This<lb />campus will serve those working in the science<lb />- and engineering - oriented companies who<lb />wish to engage in graduate or _ specialized<lb />studies. During the day it will serve some 350<lb />freshmen.<lb /><lb />A second off campus area, some. 25 miles<lb />away from the main campus, will be developed<lb />as a Center for Physical Education and Recre-<lb />ation.<lb /><lb />Another site, approximately 12 miles from<lb />the University itself, is used as a Center for<lb />Continuing Education, where specialized pro-<lb />grams are held for adults. The facility is also<lb />used for meetings for adult business and pro-<lb />fessional-groups, etc.<lb /><lb />Eel SI ECMO RENE Sap<lb /><lb />isaac a ng<lb /><lb />ee ee eae ee ee '<lb />EE PRA ERE STAR SRG AI, aE ET CLES BEE<lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />(7 slie Tiorosis is the most common and serious<lb />chronic disease of infancy and childhood. It affects<lb />the lungs and digestion. Thick, gluey mucus clogs<lb />the lungs and prevents the flow of digestive juices<lb />from the pancreas into the small intestine. The child<lb />is prey to pneumonia and often suffers from severe<lb />malnutrition. In some C/F babies a blocked intestine<lb />at birth requires immediate lifesaving surgery.<lb /><lb />What are the symptoms?<lb /><lb />Coughing and wheezing, bulky diarrhea, failure of a<lb />baby to gain weight despite enormous appetite, sweat<lb />which is salty to the taste and a "pot belly''-these<lb />are common symptons. The child may appear to have<lb />asthma, bronchitis, celiac disease or an allergy. Known<lb />as "The Great Masquerader,"' C/F presents symptoms<lb />which are often confusing even to doctors.<lb /><lb />How serious is cystic fibrosis?<lb /><lb />Extensive lung damage can occur unless treatment is<lb />started early in life. The pancreas, unable to function<lb />properly, may become scarred and fibrous. C/F kills<lb />more youngsters than polio in the pre-vaccine era. It<lb />rivals cancer as a cause of death up to age 15.<lb /><lb />What causes cystic fibrosis?<lb /><lb />Most medical scientists believe that cystic fibrosis<lb />occurs when a child inherits two genes for the con-<lb />dition-one from each parent. This "'double dose" of<lb />faulty genes throws the body's chemistry out of<lb />kilter. Ordinarily the parents themselves have only<lb />a single C/F-carrying gene apiece and show no sign<lb />of the disease. Some of their children, too, may be<lb />lucky enough to inherit only one C/F gene or none<lb />at all, and thus escape.<lb /><lb />Is C/F curable?<lb /><lb />mt Present taere is mo cure for C/E's "built-in" defect<lb />of human chemistry, but investigators are trying to<lb />pinpoint the exact deficiency or error in hopes of<lb />supplying what the body needs to correct it. Insulin<lb />was discovered as just such a control for diabetes.<lb /><lb />What can be done NOW to help C/F victims?<lb /><lb />Happily, if the disease is detected early enough, many<lb />children can be saved from its gravest consequences.<lb />A form of physical therapy called "postural drainage"<lb />helps them cough up the choking mucus. Antibiotics<lb />reduce lung infection. Aerosol sprays and plastic mist<lb />tents, in which patients sleep, enable them to breathe<lb />more naturally. Special diets including powdered ani-<lb />mal pancreas aid digestion. Since cystic fibrosis was<lb />first identified as a separate disease in 1938, methods<lb />of treatment have steadily improved so that more<lb />and more children are surviving.<lb /><lb />How common is cystic fibrosis?<lb /><lb />More common than originally supposed. One person<lb />in 20 is believed to carry the gene for C/F, which<lb />occurs as a disease in approximately one in every<lb />1,000 live births. Conservative estimates place the<lb />mumber of Americans with cystic Hbresis at 25,000,<lb />As the death rate in early childhood continues to de-<lb />cline, this total will increase.<lb /><lb />28<lb /><lb />What Is Cystic Fibrosis?<lb /><lb />Is C/F patient care expensive?<lb /><lb />For most families cystic fibrosis is a staggering<lb />economic drain. Costs of drugs, equipment and other<lb />items needed in the home may run to $1,200 a year.<lb />There are other costs which cannot be measured in<lb />money-the costs of round-the-clock watchfulness and<lb />attention by the parents .... of the demanding schedule<lb />of visits to doctors' offices, clinics or C/F Cnters<lb /><lb />. of strain on family relationships. Problems arise<lb />when care of the patient absorbs so much of the par-<lb />ents' time and energy that brothers and sisters feel<lb />left out. In households with more than one C/F child<lb />the pressures on overworked, worried mothers and<lb />fathers are enormous. Yet most parents, operating as<lb />a team, manage to meet the challenge with courage<lb />and resourcefulness.<lb /><lb />How do the C/F chapters help?<lb /><lb />some of 140 C/F chapters throughout the country,<lb />formed originally by parents of afflicted children band-<lb />ing together, help ease the burden. They work to win<lb />recognition of cystic fibrosis as a community problem<lb />involving education for homebound youngsters, fin-<lb />ancial assistance from state health departments and<lb />special care by visiting nurses and physical therapists.<lb />Also they spread awareness of C/F as a threat to<lb />other children in the community as yet undiagnosed<lb />and in serious danger if treatment is delayed<lb /><lb />Cooperating with nearby C/F Regional Centers or<lb />hospitals, chapters organize equipment pools from<lb />which air compressors, mist tents, etc. may be bor-<lb />rowed. Many contribute to the establishment and<lb />maintenance of C/F clinics.<lb /><lb />What is the National Cystic Fiborsis<lb />Research Foundation?<lb /><lb />The National Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation is<lb />a voluntary nonprofit health agency supported by the<lb />chapters. In turn it offers the chapters guidance and<lb />assistance. The Foundation has established 30 Cystic<lb />Fibrosis Regional Care, Research and Teaching Cent-<lb />ers located in medical school teaching hospitals. It<lb />makes grants to the Centers, paving the way for<lb />further research grants by the federal government's<lb />National Institutes of Health.<lb /><lb />While scientists seek the key to unlock the mystery<lb />of cystic fibrosis, more Regional Centers, more clinics<lb />in areas surrounding the Centers and many smaller<lb />local diagnostic and treatment facilities are being de-<lb /><lb />veloped with Foundation aid. Through this farflung<lb /><lb />network, the most up-to-date information about C/F,<lb />the most advanced methods of care are being made<lb />widely available.<lb /><lb />Physicians and workers in C/F research look toward<lb />the conquest of the disease within ten years. In the<lb />meantime, the Foundation plans to create 20 more<lb />Regional Centers and help set up enough related com-<lb />munity facilities so that no child with C/F anywhere<lb />in the land need be deprived of early, accurate diag-<lb />nosis and the best treatment Known to medical<lb />science.<lb /><lb />ee.
