          <lb />
          <lb />1979 OUTLOOK<lb /><lb />The age-old argument asks<lb />whether it is more difficult to attain<lb />success or retain it. Like most things<lb />that are worthwhile, winning is never<lb />easy.<lb /><lb />The oneness that brought East<lb />Carolina its first bowl championship<lb />since 1965 must be rekindled in 1979<lb />if the Pirates are to rejoin the winner's<lb />circle this season and uphold the<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />schoolTs status as one of the top<lb />Southern Independents.<lb /><lb />Sure, there are 46 lettermen in the<lb />fold and eight returning starters on<lb />offense, but six regulars are gone<lb />from the defense which finished No.<lb />2 in the NCAA last fall, and problems<lb />with depth must be resolved, too.<lb /><lb />For coach Pat Dye, two areas draw<lb />the greatest concern. First is<lb />rebuilding the defense which<lb />provided the spark to the Pirates in<lb />several games last fall, and, secondly,<lb />re-establishing a ~~personalityTT on of-<lb />fense which can best be described as<lb />an 11-man philosophy of aggression.<lb /><lb />We want to win each of our<lb />games and go to a bowl again, of<lb />course, said Dye of the goals his<lb />1979 team will labor to meet. From a<lb />standpoint of preparation this season<lb />is critical. As you can see from our<lb />schedule we must be ready from the<lb />first game to play in mid-season form.<lb /><lb />We must develop a strong run-<lb />ning game like we've had in past<lb />seasons, one that will win the battle<lb />physically, the same way our defense<lb />did last season.<lb /><lb />We have a major rebuilding job on<lb />defense to be as effective as we were<lb />in 1978, but the talent is there, | think,<lb />for another oustanding defense.<lb /><lb />Defense and defensive players<lb />have long been a trademark of the<lb />Pirates and the 1979 unit, led by<lb />linebacker Mike Brewington should<lb />again be a hard-hitting unit.<lb /><lb />The pro-sized Brewington at 6-4,<lb />230 will be in the center of things with<lb />Jeffrey Warren working as his run-<lb />ning mate.<lb /><lb />Up front, only tackle Vance Tingler<lb />is a returning starter. John Hallow<lb />moves up to open at nose guard and<lb />Noah Clark, who has started in the<lb />past will begin at the other tackle<lb /><lb /><lb /></p>
        <pb facs="00086033_0005" />

          <lb />
          <lb />
          <lb />
          <lb />spot. Wayne Poole, a starting tackle<lb />in 1977, is back after missing a season<lb />with a knee injury. At the ends John<lb />Morris and Clifford Williams appear<lb />set as starters despite missing spring<lb />drills, but are capable performers.<lb /><lb />In the secondary, Charlie Carter,<lb />Willie Holley, Ruffin McNeill and<lb />either Wayne Perry or Thomas<lb />McLaurin will give East Carolina as<lb />good a group as any around. Carter<lb />topped the Pirates with five in-<lb />terceptions in 1978.<lb /><lb />A year ago Pirate foes could<lb />manage only 128.7 yards per game<lb />rushing while the offense churned<lb />out 244.7 per outing. The Pirates<lb />passed for 84.5 yards, but opponents<lb />could manage but 76.1 yards, and on<lb />the scoreboard East Carolina<lb />averaged 22.9 points while eleven op-<lb />ponents could average only 11.2<lb />points each game.<lb /><lb />The defensive troops hope to be<lb />just as stingy, while the offense<lb />hopes to demonstrate its increased<lb />firepower which surfaced in_ the<lb />spring.<lb /><lb />Leander Green, a crafty leader and<lb />slick runner, will call the signals again<lb />and have fullback Theodore Sutton,<lb />the teamTs leading rusher the past<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />two seasons, to carry the ball, along<lb />with speedy Anthony Collins, also a<lb />returning starter. Sam Harrell will<lb />assume the other halfback post.<lb /><lb />The forward wall will feature star-<lb />ters from tackle to tackle and should<lb />be one of the most solid units on the<lb />team. Tackles Joe Godette and Matt<lb />Mulholland, guards Wayne Inman<lb />and Mitchell Johnston, along with<lb />center Jeff Hagans form a stalwart<lb />group. Godette started at tackle in<lb />1977 and tight end in 1978, but is<lb />back at home for 1979.<lb /><lb />For the passing game, Billy Ray<lb />Washington will open at tight end af-<lb />ter snaring 515 yards on passes last<lb />fall for a 30.3-yard per catch average,<lb />while Vern Davenport will assume the<lb />front-line spot at split end.<lb /><lb />In the kicking game punter Rodney<lb />Allen returns after punting for a 39.1<lb />average last fall, while Collins, No. 15<lb />in the NCAA in kickoff returns a year<lb />ago with his 24.9 average returns and<lb />Holley will assume the punt return<lb />duties.<lb /><lb />Depth may be a problem as in<lb />some past years, but the front-line<lb />personnel appears strong and ready<lb />to continue the success story that has<lb />been Pirate football.<lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />POSITION ANALYSIS<lb /><lb />OFFENSE<lb /><lb />(22 Lettermen Returning, 8 Lost)<lb /><lb />Split End " Vern Davenport<lb />assumes the starting role and is the<lb />only letterman at this post. Jim<lb />Renuart, former DB Gerald Sykes<lb />and newcomers will offer depth. (2<lb />returning, 1 lost)<lb /><lb />Tackles - Starters Matt<lb />Mulholland and Joe Godette (1977)<lb />return while letterman Tootie Rob-<lb />bins and Dwight Tart add depth. (3<lb />returning, 2 lost)<lb /><lb />Guards " A standout tandem<lb />returns in Wayne Inman, second<lb />team all-Southern Independent in<lb />1978, and Mitchell Johnston, making<lb />this a strong point. (2 returning, 1<lb />lost)<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Center " Returning starter Jeff<lb />Hagans anchors the trenchmen well<lb />with letterman John Maness and<lb />snapper Gene Winters available.           <lb />PAT DYE ON THE WISHBONE<lb /><lb />For East CarolinaTs football team<lb />and coach Pat Dye the wishbone of-<lb />fense is a way of life, but not just out<lb />of habit. The sixth-year Pirate coach<lb />thinks it does a lot for his team, not<lb />just on offense.<lb /><lb />The wishbone does as much for<lb />our defense as it does for our offense,<lb />believe it or not,TT Dye said of the for-<lb />mation he first encountered in the<lb />1970 Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl when<lb />Alabama played Oklahoma.<lb /><lb />~To be a successful team you must<lb />be able to run the football and | donTt<lb />think there can be any doubt that the<lb />wishbone is the best running for-<lb />mation. Everyone on the offense<lb />must be a complete football player,<lb />able to block and run and be<lb />physically tough.<lb /><lb />Teams win playing _ tough,<lb />physical defense, too, and working<lb />against the wishbone as we do all<lb />spring makes our defense work hard.<lb /><lb />The wishbone is a more difficult<lb />offense than most to coach, but at<lb />the same time | think itTs more fun to<lb />coach, too. We have been running it<lb /><lb />for several years now and are begin-<lb />ning to get more sophisticated with it.<lb />We can mix in other things effectively<lb />now, but make no mistake the wish-<lb />bone is our bread and butter.T<lb /><lb />A year ago the Pirates were one of<lb />only nine college football teams run-<lb />ning from the wishbone. The list in-<lb />cluded Oklahoma, Alabama, Texas<lb />A&amp;M, Texas-Arlington, Appalachian<lb />State, Villanova, Penn and Holy<lb />Cross in addition to the Pirates.<lb /><lb />Showing the effectiveness of the<lb />formation, the 1978 Pirates, on the<lb />way to the Independence Bowl<lb />outrushed opponents by an average<lb />of 244.7 to 128.8 yards per game and<lb />scored 22.9 points per game to 11.2<lb />for the 11 regular season foes.<lb /><lb />Over the last five years the Pirates<lb />are the nationTs ninth most produc-<lb />tive rushing team with a 272.49 yards<lb />per game average. Another wishbone<lb />team leads, Oklahoma at 365.15<lb />yards. Appalachian State is the next<lb />closest team in the state at 248.07,<lb />ranking 20th.<lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

Many had homes and<lb />families in the small villages along the<lb />coast.<lb /><lb />Edward Teach, best known as ~Black-<lb />beardTT was a resident of Eastern North<lb />Carolina. He had a house at Ocracoke on<lb />the Outer Banks and an inland home at<lb />Bath on the Pamlico River.<lb /><lb />East Carolina UniversityTs interest in<lb />pirates and sea lore began in 1934. That<lb />year, the Tecoan, the yearbook for what<lb />was then East Carolina Teachers College,<lb />carried pirates as its theme. The pages<lb />were filled with paintings and sketches of<lb />patched-eye figures, tall ships and buried<lb />treasure. The book referred to the tales of<lb />the infamous ~~Teachy the PirateTT often<lb />told by natives in the nearby historic town<lb />of Bath.<lb /><lb />The menTs varsity team, at the time,<lb />was know as ~The Teachers a lackluster<lb />band of athletes who had won only two<lb />football games in three seasons of<lb />existence. But the student bodyTs interest<lb />in pirates quickly resulted in changing the<lb />name of the team to capture the romantic<lb />appeal of the early sea adventurers. The<lb /><lb />48<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />change brought so much enthusiam that<lb />in the following year, 1935, the Pirate<lb />football team had a much better season,<lb />winning three of its six games.<lb /><lb />Prior to the introduction of athletics for<lb />men, the ECTC Athletic Association,<lb />comprising women athletes in basketball,<lb />tennis, baseball and archery were content<lb />with the more classical nicknames. A<lb />1930-31 Handbook for ECTC listed the<lb />two teams that made up the Athletic<lb />Association as the Olympians and the<lb />Athenians. Their colors were purple and<lb />gold (the same as todayTs colors) and the<lb />mascot was a wildcat.<lb /><lb />Other uses of the pirate theme began in<lb />the 1940Ts with a literary magazine named<lb />~Pieces of Eight.T The name, however,<lb />was later changed to ~~Rebel.T<lb /><lb />The college yearbook became the<lb />~~BuccaneerT in the 1950Ts and the pirate<lb />symbol, the face of a bearded, patched-<lb />eye character with a crossed bone em-<lb />blem on his hat was added to the school<lb />seal in the mid 1960's.<lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

        <p>FICKLEN STADIUM<lb /><lb />Ficklen Memorial Stadium was<lb />dedicated Sept. 21, 1963, the same<lb />day East Carolina defeated Wake<lb />Forest, 20-10, in the only football<lb />game between the two schools until<lb />this year.<lb /><lb />The dedication game was the<lb />culmination of a dream come true for<lb />the then East Carolina College and all<lb />of eastern North Carolina. The<lb />original plan was announced on Oct.<lb />7, 1961, by Dr. Leo Jenkins, Chan-<lb />cellor of the College, at a meeting of<lb />the Society of Buccaneers.<lb /><lb />Within a year, $283,387 had been<lb />raised, although the goal had been<lb />only $200,000. With the funds in<lb />hand, Ficklen Stadium was built.<lb /><lb />The original stadium consisted of<lb />the permanent stands on the south<lb />side, a small press box and the old<lb />lighting system that was removed af-<lb />ter the 1974 season. Total cost was<lb />$300,000.<lb /><lb />The north side permanent seating<lb />was constructed in 1968, increasing<lb />the stadium seating capacity to<lb />20,000.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />49<lb /><lb />The stadium was named for the<lb />last James Skinner Ficklen, a Green-<lb />ville resident, who distinguished him-<lb />self as one of AmericaTs leading<lb />tobacconists. At the time of his death<lb />in 1955, Ficklen was President and<lb />Chairman of the Board of the E.B.<lb />Ficklen Tobacco Company of Green-<lb />ville. He was a close friend of the<lb />College and established a financial aid<lb />foundation, the Ficklen Foundation,<lb />to aid students of the College.<lb /><lb />The current lights are a com-<lb />bination of metallic and incandescent<lb />lights. There are 384 fixtures of 1500<lb />watts each on the six 162-foot<lb />towers. The cost of the new system<lb />was $450,000. Engineers say Ficklen<lb />is the best lighted stadium in the<lb />Southeast.<lb /><lb />A fund drive for 2% million dollars<lb />was begun in March of 1977 in hopes<lb />of expanding the stadium.<lb /><lb />For the 1978 opener it could seat<lb />35,000 fans and featured a new<lb />scoreboard with a light-bank mes-<lb />sage center and an_ ultra-modern<lb />press box as well.<lb /><lb /><lb /></p>
