He earned his A.B. degree at the<lb />Hickory College in 1935 and added his M.A. at the University of North:<lb /><lb />' Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1947.<lb /><lb />An all-around athlete, he gained his greatest recognition at Lenoir-<lb />Rhyne as a football and basketball player and in 1933 and 1934 was<lb />named to the Charlotte Observer's 'Flaming Five,' the top five athletes<lb />chosen annually in North and South Carolina.<lb /><lb />Stasavich first entered the coaching profession as an assistant at<lb />Campbell College in 1935 and then returned to his Alma Mater in 1938,<lb />where he served as an assistant until entering the United States Navy in<lb />1942.<lb /><lb />During World War II he served as commanding officer on an LST both<lb />in the European and Pacific Theaters and in the Mediterranean. Following<lb />his discharge in 1946, he returned to Lenoir-Rhyne, where he served as<lb />football coach and athletic director until joining East Carolina in 1962.<lb /><lb />While at Lenoir-Rhyne, his teams won nine Carolinas Conference<lb />championships and in 1960 took the National Association of Inter-<lb />collegiate Athletics national championship.<lb /><lb />Among the long string of national honors Stasavich has gained are<lb />AFCA College Coach of the Year, 1964; NAIA Coach of the Year, 1959;<lb />and District Coach of the Year, 1960-61-63-64-65. He was named to the<lb />Helms Foundation Hall of Fame in 1960.<lb /><lb />Since coming to East Carolina, Stasavich has posted a record of 44 wins,<lb />12 losses, and one tie. Three of his teams/ 1963, 1964, 1965] posted 9-1<lb />records for the season and won bowl games each year; the 1966 club<lb />shared the Southern Conference championship.<lb /><lb />Besides an outstanding career in athletics, which has led him to write<lb />innumerable articles on single wing football and lecture frequently at<lb />national clinics, he is an accomplished after dinner speaker and always in<lb />demand on the banquet circuit.<lb /><lb />An elder and Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian Church in<lb />Greenville, he spends considerable time serving the Fellowship of Christian<lb />Athletes and frequently contributes his time to charitable institutions. He<lb />is a member of the board of directors of the North Carolina Cerebral Palsy<lb />Hospital, is listed in Who's Who of the Southeast and was a member of the<lb />board of directors of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.<lb /><lb />Married to the former Helen Warlick of Hickory, he is the father of two<lb />daughters, Rebecca and Mary Helen, and a son, Walter.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />3<lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />PREVIEW - 1968<lb /><lb />When fall practice began, East Carolinas coaching staff faced the<lb />problem of deciding who would play tailback in 1968.<lb /><lb />But no one on the squad, including other hopefuls Billy Wightman and<lb />Fella Rhodes, seems likely able to replace departed Neal Hughes, who was<lb />20th in the nation in total offense last year. Of the three, Rhodes was<lb />most impressive in spring practice in the latter stages.<lb /><lb />Outside of this spot, the offense appears to be in good hand. Charlie<lb />Overton and Jim Gudger at blocking back have the ability to get the job<lb />done; a host of wingback material includes veterans Tommy Bullock,<lb />Dwight Flanagan, as well as Wightman and Rhodes, and newcomer George<lb />Whitley, regarded as the most improved player up from the freshman<lb />squad; and Butch Colson, who set a conference record for rushing with<lb />1,135 yards last year, scored 15 touchdowns and was fourth in the nation<lb />in scoring and fifth in rushing, at fullback. Mike McGuirk, who played<lb />wingback as a freshman, but didn't compete in 1967, returned at spring<lb />practice time and claimed the No. 2 fullback spot.<lb /><lb />The offensive line was riddled by graduation, but veterans Ben Grieb<lb />and Worth Springs on the interior and Jim Adkins and Bob Withrow, both<lb />lettermen ends form a good nucleus, to which Bill Tucker, a junior center<lb />who is vastly improved, adds immeasurably.<lb /><lb />Defensively, only three players are missing from last year. The heart of<lb />the unit includes Wayne Lineberry, Don Tyson and George Wheeler, each a<lb />candidate for All-Conference honors, plus a veteran defensive secondary<lb />that includes Mike Boaz, Rhodes, Bullock, Wightman, Flanagan and Jeff<lb />Dudley, another whose improvement over last season was very marked.<lb /><lb />The schedule is a tough one, featuring four Southern Conference games<lb />and three rugged independents.<lb /><lb />ere<lb />RARBRRRABR<lb /><lb />OUR BASIC OFFENSE, "The Stasavich Single Wing'<lb /><lb />4<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />WILLIAM LEE [Fella] RHODES: Tailback, Senior, 5-10, 160,<lb />Chesapeake, Va.<lb /><lb />A defensive specialist last season and the owner of the school record<lb />with an interception runback, he moved into the muddled tailback picture<lb />about mid-way spring drills and will be given serious consideration for that<lb />spot in pre-season practice. Throws well and is an elusive runner who<lb />showed tremendous improvement as an offensive player in the spring.<lb /><lb />PETE RIBBINS: End, Sophomore, 6-1, 190, Burlington, Ontario<lb /><lb />Has size, speed and hands to be an outstanding football player. Fastest<lb />end on team but needs experience and improvement in blocking and<lb />tackling. A native of Belfast, Ireland, he has lived in London, England,<lb />Malaysia, Kansas City and Toronto. His is a pre-dentistry major.<lb /><lb />DAVID G. [Dave] ROBERTS: Tackle, Sophomore, 6-2, 198, Jacksonville,<lb />North Carolina<lb />A starter on the freshman team, he continued to improve in spring<lb />practice and will see action this fall as a reserve. A biology major who<lb />earned eight letters in high school athletics, he missed six spring practices<lb />because of illness. Brother Irwin played at East Carolina before injury<lb />ended career.<lb /><lb />THOMAS WESLEY [Wes] ROTHROCK, JR.: Rover, Sophomore, 5-11,<lb />180, Enfield, N.C.<lb /><lb />Starting defensive back on the freshman team, he gained all-state<lb />recognition and goes into pre-season drills as the No. 2 rover on the team.<lb />He was handicapped in spring drills by a knee injury, but aggressiveness<lb />indicates he will play a lot during 1968.<lb /><lb />WILBUR RICHARD [Wilbur] SASSER, JR.: Guard, Sophomore, 5-11,<lb />215, Goldsboro, N. C.<lb /><lb />A three sport star in high school, has the size to become a good football<lb />player. Enjoyed only a fair spring practice, but worked in summer to im-<lb />prove skills. A member of the track team tintil spring drills began, he plans<lb />to stay out for the full season next year.<lb /><lb />WORTH SPRINGS: Tackle, Senior, 5-10, 208, Charlotte, N. C.<lb /><lb />The best blocker on the team, he missed spring drills while concen-<lb />trating on academics. A real hustler who is quick and mobile, he is out-<lb />standing as a downfield blocker and is aggressive. Potentially the best<lb />offensive lineman in recent years at East Carolina, he definitely is a<lb />candidate for post-season honors. A key figure in the offensive picture<lb />for 1968.<lb /><lb />22<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

C.<lb /><lb />An outstanding student, he showed tremendous improvement between<lb />the close of the 1967 season and spring drills, gaining some 30 pounds and<lb />losing none of his agility and quickness. The biggest center. East Carolina<lb />has had since Coach Stasavich came and considered potentially the best<lb />since that time. A hard worker, a fighter of the first order and a leader,<lb />he's a candidate for post-season honors. Hes a B-plus pre-law student<lb />majoring in history. His father played for Coach Stasavich at Lenoir-<lb />Rhyne.<lb /><lb />TIMOTHY ODELL [Tiny Tim] TYLER: Tackle, Sophomore, 6-2, 230,<lb />Alexandria, Va.<lb />Big, strong and tough, he ran as No. 2 outside tackle in the spring, but<lb />has potential to move up. Had a good spring practice and is considered<lb />future starter. :<lb /><lb />DONALD WAYNE [Don] TYSON: Tackle, Junior, 6-0, 235, Fayetteville,<lb />North Carolina<lb /><lb />A starter as a sophomore last year, missed spring practice because of<lb />_ second shoulder operation in two years. He won 12 letters in high school<lb />and was the team's placement kicker last year. If second shoulder opera-<lb />tion proves as successful as the first, he could be a great one. He worked<lb />hard during summer to get into peak condition. Started out as No. 5<lb />tackle on freshman team because of injury, but worked his way to front<lb />and has been there ever since. A definite candidate for post-season honors.<lb /><lb />PAUL WEATHERSBEE: Linebacker, Junior, 190, 6-0, Norwood, N.C.<lb /><lb />A reserve most of last season, he started the final game and had a good<lb />spring practice. The youngest of five children, he is a psychology major<lb />and is expected to be a starter on the 1968 team at linebacker. Injured ankle early in<lb />the spring and was hampered rest of the practice sessions. Working to im-<lb /><lb />prove quickness and agility and is expected to be a standout this fall. A<lb />candidate for post-season honors.<lb /><lb />GEORGE WILLIAM [George] WHITLEY: Wingback, Sophomore, 5-9<lb />165, Huntersville, N.C.<lb />After only a so-so freshman season, he finished spring practice classi- .<lb />fied as the most improved player on the squad. Has good speed and '<lb />elusiveness and figures strongly in the picture as a possible starter in the<lb />fall.<lb /><lb />WILLIAM C. [Bill] WIGHTMAN: Tailback, Junior, 5-10, 175, Graham,<lb />North Carolina<lb /><lb />Played more defense than anything else last season and could be a<lb />starter in the secondary in 1968 if he doesn't start at tailback. One of<lb />several players considered for the starting job at tailback, he is the fastest<lb />man on the squad, is a good open field runner and has a strong arm. Needs<lb />to improve his passing, but has the natural ability to succeed departed<lb />Neal Hughes who starred at that position last fall. Was the punter in 1967<lb />and is expected to be again this year.<lb /><lb />DANNY WAYNE [Danny] WILMER: End, Junior, 6-3, 224, Buena Vista,<lb />Virginia<lb />Tremendous potential with good hands and size for tight end position.<lb />One of the hardest hitters on the team, needs to improve agility and block-<lb />ing. Improvement last season was impeded because he suffered ruptured<lb />appendix and lost 36 pounds before starting recovery. An All-State player<lb />in high school, he could become a starter.<lb /><lb />ROBERT PHILLIP WITHROW: End, Senior, 185, 6-2, Dayton, Ohio<lb /><lb />__ Switched from split end to tight end in the spring he showed particular '<lb />improvement in his blocking and is counted on for a good season. After a<lb /><lb />knee operation following spring of 1967, came back to see some service as<lb /><lb />a reserve. Caught three passes, two for touchdowns. Has good speed and<lb /><lb />likely will be a starter. Brother Cal earned All-America recognition at<lb /><lb />Kentucky as a center.<lb /><lb />GERALD WAYNE WRENN: End, Sophomore, 6-0, 175, Danville, Va.<lb />An offensive end and defensive rover back, he also is a punter. The potent<lb />passing attack of last season could return. It's centered around junior qb<lb />Terry Bradshaw and top receivers Tommy Spinks [who broke all school<lb />receiving records], Ken Liberto and Larry Brewer. The running game<lb />should be better and provide better balance. There is good depth among<lb />the running backs. Defensively, where the Bulldogs collapsed in the<lb />second half of 1967 season, there are still problems. There is a lack of<lb />depth and size in both lines, but especially on defense. The defensive<lb />backs are still young, but have experience. The schedule is tough--five<lb />major opponents and the rugged GSC foes. Trainer:<lb />Charley Hawkes.<lb /><lb />1968 Outlook: Under new Head Coach Fran Curci, the Spartans<lb />are optimistic about a winning season in 1968. With a loss of only 10<lb />lettermen and with 31 returnees, indications are that the Spartans will<lb />fare well with their ambitious 1968 schedule which includes Miss. State<lb />of the SEC.<lb /><lb />Emphasis will be on the passing game featuring QB Jim Del Gaizo<lb />and a host of fine receivers.<lb /><lb />The defense up front is formidable and one of the strong points of<lb />the Spartans' overall game. The forward wall is led by Captain Ron Brown<lb />Tackle Dick Nittinger and guard Russ Edge.<lb /><lb />Several newcomers are expected to boost team speed.<lb /><lb />1968 Schedule 1968 Schedule and Scores<lb /><lb />Sept. 21 - Univ. of Cal. at Santa T OPP<lb /><lb />Barbara [A] s wey 13<lb />Sept. 28 - Akron [H] O Akron 0<lb />Oct. 5 - Tulane [A] QO So. He<lb />has 24 lettermen returning, losing 18 to graduation. Eighteen rookies<lb />move up from a small freshmen squad.<lb /><lb />Two quarterbacks return, but a sophomore, Don Swisher, is likely to<lb />get the starting job. Last season's tough defensive backfield is back, with<lb />some sophomores pressing for the jobs. Juniors Greg Gikas and Bob<lb />Crabtree have moved from the offensive to defensive line, apparently to<lb />great advantage.<lb /><lb />Last year's leading rusher, Charlie '"Choo-Choo' Jones has been con-<lb />verted to flanker. Of the top running backs, Dan Slusher, Jim Shook, Ed<lb />Kliner, and Dick Carter only Shook has lettered.<lb /><lb />The same problem of building a consistent offensive line is the<lb />Herd's chief concern for 1968.<lb /><lb />1968 Schedule 1967 Schedule and Scores<lb /><lb />Sept. 14 - Morehead [H] M OPP<lb />Sept. 21 - Ohio Univ. Assistants: Harold Steelman, Bob<lb />Gatling, Hank Witt, Chal Port, Dwight Adams, Oval Jaynes, Don Murry.<lb />Athletic Business Manager: Arthur Hogan. Trainer: Roy Don Wilson<lb /><lb />1968 Outlook: Defensively, the Bulldogs should reach their top<lb />performance in 1968. John Small [6'4'", 230] and Jackie Zorn [5'8", 170]<lb />combine to give The Citadel the best linebacking combination in the<lb />Southern Conference. The defense is aggressive and experienced. Last<lb />year their problem was rushing the passer. Much time and effort was spent<lb />during spring practice to improve the pass rush and containment.<lb /><lb />Offensively, Jim McMillan, second-team All Conference tailback, has<lb />recovered from a shoulder operation and appears to be set to break most<lb />of the school's offensive records. For McMillan to become really effective<lb />the Bulldogs must have another good running back. If Offensive Coach<lb />Bob Gatling finds a promising fullback the offense could be tough.<lb /><lb />Overall The Citadel, while playing a tough schedule, should improve<lb />On last season's 5 and 5 record.<lb /><lb />1968 Schedule 1967 Schedule and Scores<lb /><lb />Sept. 21 - Army [A] CIT OPP<lb />Sept. 28 - Lehigh [H] 7 So. The Bucs<lb />again will have a rugged defensive unit and the coaching staff feels the<lb />offense will be better by 50 percent.<lb /><lb />Only five starters are missing from the first 22 of last year with eight<lb />defensive stalwarts returning from the unit that was ranked third in the<lb />Ohio Valley Conference. <lb />CROSS COUNTRY - SOCCER<lb /><lb />After a very successful season in 1967, the outlook for cross country<lb />at East Carolina University in 1968 is a very bright one.<lb /><lb />Coach Bill Carson, in his second year with the Pirates, has upgraded his<lb />schedule again this year. Included are Georgetown and the University of<lb />Florida and the overall slate is the toughest in the history of the school.<lb /><lb />The top three finishers from the 1967 squad are returning. They are<lb />Ken Voss, Don Jayroe and Randy Martin.<lb /><lb />'Voss, a native of California who now lives in Greenville, holds every<lb />distance record for East Carolina University. "'He should rank as one of<lb />the top cross-country runners in the South," says Carson. ''He's a dedi-<lb />cated, hard worker who has progressed rapidly in the last year."<lb /><lb />Jayroe finished third in the Southern Conference championship meet<lb />last year and alternated all during the season with Voss last season. "'! ex-<lb />pect Don to challenge Kenny for the No. 1 position this year," Carson<lb />says. "He had to overcome several injuries last year and barring a re-<lb />currance he will also rank well in the South."<lb /><lb />Martin is a co-captain and was the most improved runner on the 1967<lb />squad. He came into his own last year as he finished seventh in the<lb />Southern Conference and sixth in the state meet," Carson says. "He isa<lb />fine leader and we are expecting him to have an outstanding career."<lb /><lb />Besides these three, other returning lettermen are Co-Captain John<lb />Osborne, who ran as No. 7 man on the squad last year and Dave Wight,<lb />who ran No. 8.<lb /><lb />Returning from last year's freshman team are Lee Mauney, Barry Beasley<lb />David Robbins and Gary Wight.<lb /><lb />Outstanding newcomers are Joe Day, Fayetteville and Neill Ross,<lb />Raleigh. Both ran the mile in 4:17 in High School. Other freshman with<lb />good credentials are Lanny Davis, Charlotte and Mike Woolsey, Ft.<lb />Lauderdale.<lb /><lb />EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY<lb />1968 CROSS COUNTRY SCHEDULE<lb /><lb />September 21 N.C. <lb />Tok Rae<lb /><lb />FOR REFERENCE<lb /><lb />OEMCO<lb /><lb />Do Not Take From This Room<lb /><lb />REVIEWING 1967<lb /><lb />After posting one of the poorest records in history the year before,<lb />Coach Clarence Stasavich came up with another typical powerhouse in<lb />1967 and finished 8-2.<lb /><lb />The Pirates started the season with a surprising 27-7 victory and in the<lb />process uncovered a young man who was to crack the conference rushing<lb />record by season's end.<lb /><lb />Butch Colson, who was figured to share the fullback duties with George<lb />Gay, an upperclassman, was rushed into action early in the game when<lb />Gay suffered a broken ankle. Colson, a stocky sophomore from Elizabeth<lb />City, gained 133 yards in 28 carries and scored two touchdowns, the first<lb />of 14 he was to register during the season. .<lb /><lb />Neal Hughes, another who was not counted on as a star in pre-season<lb />practice, also gave indications of things to come when he completed two<lb />of three passes for 22 yards and rushed for another 31 in the role of a<lb />reserve.<lb /><lb />Like Colson, Hughes was to become one of the outstanding offensive<lb />players who have served under Coach Stasavich. He finished the season<lb />with more than 1,500 yards in total offense, which was good enough to<lb />place him in the top 20 in the nation.<lb /><lb />Colson, whose 1,135 yards set the Southern Conference record, placed<lb />him fourth in the nation in rushing and his 92 points also was good for<lb />fourth in the nation. Behind Colson, the Pirates as a team, averaging 231.6<lb />yards a game, had the sixth best rushing record in the nation.<lb /><lb />After that upset start against William and Mary, the Pirates went on to<lb />win their first six games and appeared headed for the first undefeated<lb />season since Coach Stasavich took over.<lb /><lb />After a rousing 27-26 victory over Parsons College, however, the Bucs<lb />were badly battered physically and the following week, a fired-up Citadel<lb />team came to town and went away with a 21-19 win that cost East<lb />Carolina at least another share in the conference title.<lb /><lb />The second .loss was to come two weeks later at the hands of West<lb />Texas State when the Bucs, after trailing by a touchdown at halftime,<lb />lost the services of Colson and wound up on the short end of a 34-13<lb />count.<lb /><lb />The Bucs closed out the year with a victory over Marshall. In retro-<lb />spect, Coach Stasavich called the victory over Louisville the high spot of<lb />the season from a technical standpoint. The Cardinals came to town with<lb />an outstanding team, probably the best the Pirates faced all year, and were<lb />beaten 18-13 as East Carolina won the fifth in a row.<lb /><lb />Besides Colson, who missed by four points tying the conference scoring<lb />record and was named Player of the Year, the Bucs had All-Conference<lb />selections in Hughes and offensive tackle Kevin Moran, who also picked up<lb />the Jacobs Blocking trophy.<lb /><lb />48<lb /><lb /><lb /></p>
