<lb />PREVIEW - 1966<lb /><lb />The fifth East Carolina team fielded by Coach Clarence Stasavich will be<lb />the first eligible to win the Southern Conference title. Last year, the games played<lb />by the Pirates counted, but the team did not play enough to qualify for the title.<lb /><lb />There will be some new faces in the Buc lineup this fall, especially in the<lb />offensive backfield, where three of the four starters will not return. Only Tom<lb />Grant, the wingback, is returning. Defensively, however, the Bucs had slim losses,<lb />and the backfield here is back again.<lb /><lb />Finding replacements for All-American Dave Alexander, fullback; along<lb />with tailback George Richardson, and blocking back Norm Swindell will be among<lb />the primary tasks for the Buc coaches. Three men return with experience in the<lb />backfield at these spots, Neal Hughes at tailback, Bill Bailey at fullback and<lb />tailback, and Nelson Gravatt at blocking back. But Stas admits that the positions<lb />are up for grabs.<lb /><lb />SCHEDULE-For he first time since the Stasavich era began, the Bucs have<lb />a 10-game schedule, including five home games, and six conference contests.<lb />Four new opponents join the list, including William &amp; Mary, Davidson, Southern<lb />llinois and Southern Mississippi. Returning this season are Northeast Louis-<lb />iana, Furman, George Washington, The Citadel, Richmond and Louisville.<lb /><lb />LOSSES-Eleven lettermen were lost, including Alexander, Richardson, Swin-<lb />dell, monster back Ikey Bullard, guards Mitchell Cannon and Jay Andrews, tackle<lb />Corie McRae and ends John McPhaul and Jim Abernethy, specialist Peter Kriz.<lb /><lb />RETURNING LETTERMEN-Seventeen lettermen are back, with the strength<lb />in the two lines and the defensive backfield. Regular returning are guard Walter<lb />Bostic, tackles Leroy Cobb, Pete Crane, John Schwarz and Kevin Moran; center<lb />Johnny Crew; wingback Tom Grant; defensive backs Todd Hicks, Neal Hughes<lb />and Robert Ellis; ends Ruffin Odom, Paul Schnurr and Churchill Grimes. Punter<lb />Mike Herring is back and will see action in the line as a guard. Others returning<lb />who saw a lot of action include fullback-tailback Bill Bailey. blocking back Nelson<lb />Gravatt and Joe Testo.<lb /><lb />POSITION BY POSITION<lb /><lb />Wingback-Tom Grant is back as a starter, backed up by Robert Ellis.<lb /><lb />Tailback-Heavy losses here, with Neal Hughes, Bill Bailey and several<lb />sophomores as the top candidates.<lb /><lb />Fullback-Bailey and sophomore George Gay will probably be the top choices<lb />here.<lb /><lb />Blocking Back-Two juniors, Nelson Gravatt and Joe Testo, who saw duty<lb />from time to time last year, are the top candidates.<lb /><lb />The Line-Tackles Pete Crane, John Schwarz, and Kevin Moran; guards<lb />Walter Bostic, Leroy Cobb; center Johnny Crew: ends Ruffin Odom, Paul Schnurr<lb />and Churchill Grimes; give the Bucs a solid nucleus to center their attach.<lb /><lb />Offensive-Stasavich Single Wing with variations and a few new twists to<lb />keep the opponents on their toes.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

Levy looks for<lb />a strong running game to go with the already strorig passing attack.<lb /><lb />At quarterback, the Tribe has Dan Darragh and Mike Madden returning.<lb />Darragh amassed 896 yards, while Madden ran for 398 to give the Indians a<lb />double punch.<lb /><lb />Lost, however, is All-Conference and Player of the Year George Pearce,<lb />who set conference and school records for his receptions.<lb /><lb />Back defensively, however, are Adin Brown, Terry O'Toole and Bob Gad-<lb />kowski, are expected to make it tough for the opposition to gain ground.<lb /><lb />Levy doesn't expect to platoon, having scrapped this idea midway through<lb />the season last year, since turning victories in five of the last six games.<lb /><lb />Returning Lettermen: 20-Chuch Albertson, E; Ned Carr, E; Gordon Buch-<lb />anan, E: Randy Glesenkamp, T; Joe Neilson, T; John Shea, T; Bill Conaway, G;<lb />Rodney Schmitt, G; Bob Shay, C; Dan Darragh, QB; Mike Madden, QB; Eddie<lb />Harring, HB; Donnie McGuire, HB; Steve Slotnick, HB; Chip Young, HB: Les<lb />Beadling, FB; Adin Brown, LB; Bob Gadkowski, LB; Terry O'Toole, LB; Dick<lb />Sikorski, LB.<lb /><lb />Promising Newcomers-Marty Fuller, FB; Bob Ludwig, LB; Jeff Lund, TB;<lb />Bill McKinnon, Def. Despite the im-<lb />provement in the backfield, however, the smallness of the line could hurt, and<lb />defense is expected to be the strong point of the team.<lb /><lb />Returning Lettermen: 26-Floyd Giblin, E; Kenneth Holland, E; Tommy<lb />Lewis, E: Charles Rohner, E; Mickey Cleveland, E; Ronnie Sumter, T. But Coach Bob King, in his ninth year<lb />as head coach of the Paladins feels that desire is the key to football victories as<lb />East Carolina will testify last year. He admits that it will be a great challenge,<lb />but feels here are some fine players on the team with good potential. The club<lb />will be very young with half the roster composed of sophomores. During the<lb />spring game, eight held down starting assignments on the two starting units.<lb />Lack of experienced depth will be a problem, especially in the line. The backfield<lb />seems to have plenty of depth, although still not real well off in experience. The<lb />Paladins will also have to depend on speed and surprise, since most of their<lb />opponents will be much larger. With less than 35 men on the team, the ccaches will<lb />have trouble practicing and playing two-platoon football, although the platoon<lb />system will be used. There is no big difference in speed, size or skills this year.<lb />The big boost will come with experience on the part of both players and coaches.<lb />Smith feels he knows his players better this season and can put their talents<lb />to fuller use. Some changes are expected in the offensive system, but the un-<lb />conventional "'Wildcat'' defense will remain. With Lyle,<lb />a total of 17 lettermen are gone, with none returning at quarterback, tailback<lb />or tackle. An expected 13 non-lettermen will probaly draw starting assign-<lb />ments, seven on offense and six on defense. Six of these will be sophomores. The<lb />big bright spot is the return of All-Conference Tom Metz, rated by Camp as the<lb />most complete player on the team. Tops in defense, he is also an excellent pass<lb />receiver, leading the team last season. This year, he may be pressed into more<lb />use on offense, but he'Il remain primarily a defensive weapon. The backfield will<lb />be where the real work must be done, with four non-lettermen working there,<lb />including three sophomores. Glenn Davis will probably handle the quarterbacking<lb />with sophs Bob Lavinia, Steve McLnar, end Jimmy Barton at tailback, fullback<lb />and wingback respectively. Although 18 lettermen will be returning this fall, the losses were<lb />to key men. The Bulldogs also lost their<lb />kicking specialists, Pat Green, who did the placements, and punter Kroghie<lb />Andresen. Rushing this spring left a lot to be desired,<lb />although the team may have better speed. Size is down however. The chief<lb />threats are QB Glen Bynum, halfbacks Earl King and Mike McAdams and full-<lb />back Milo McCarthy. Over 60 passes were thrown in the spring game, and if<lb />that is an indication, the air route will be used a fot this fall, more so than in a<lb />decade. After losing their first two, they snapped back and rolled to three big<lb />wins to finish the year. As usual, a number of fine sophomores will be expected<lb />to fill key positions on the Varsity, with fullback being an almost certain sophomore<lb />unless an upper classman is switched. Top candidates for positions are three<lb />All-State choices last year, linebacker Wayne Lineberry, TB Dennis Young and<lb />End Jimmy Adkins. Others likely to see a lot of action are Ends Miles Hunnicutt,<lb />Johnny Johnson and Bob Withrow, tackles Bill Livermore and Worth Springs,<lb />guards Ben Grieb and Randy Ross, center Van Hester, Tailback Mike Bridges<lb />arid Mitchell McIntosh, fullback George Gay and Steve Buchholz, fullback<lb />Bill Cothran, and wingback Dave Meadows.<lb />The Citadel's freshmen move into the schedule this season, replacing David-<lb />son. The Baby Bucs will have two home games this season.<lb />During the summer, the coaches announced recruiting was moving along<lb />well. Boys have been recruited from Florida, Maryland, New Hampshire, New<lb />Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and the District<lb />of Columbia. 3<lb />1965 RESULTS 1966 SCHEDULE i.<lb />Baby Bucs Opp. Oct. 1-Frederick Military (A)<lb />: fee Military 33 Oct. 15-Apprentice (H)<lb />39 * Sige or 26 Oct. -: 28-The Citadel (A) ib<lb />48 Apprentice 7 Nov. 5-Richmond (A)<lb />34 Richmond 6 Nov. 18-Chowan (H)<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />1965 FOOTBALL SUPERLATIVE AWARDS<lb /><lb />E.
