Of course, there are a few<lb />"ifs'' which provoke this statement. Finding a capable replacement for All-Amer-<lb />ican tailback Bill Cline may be an easier task than was expected since George<lb />Richardson has proven his ability to fill in the starting position during the winter<lb />drills. Too, a new Sophomore star is in the making at the tailback spot in the<lb />person of Neal Hughes, who performed like a veteran during the Purple-Gold game<lb />this spring.<lb /><lb />The defensive line should be as strong as it was last year but there is some<lb />doubt as to how well the Sophomores will perform in the defensive secondary.<lb />If these young Bucs do their job right from the start of the season it is possible<lb />that the Pirates could have another great year.<lb /><lb />SCHEDULE-will be undoubtably the strongest in the history of the college<lb />with the addition of such opponents as the University of Louisville, Northeast<lb />Louisiana and strong George Washington. It is evident from reports received<lb />from SID's and coaches from the old teams on the card, that Furman, The<lb />Citadel, Richmond, Howard, West Chester, and Lenoir Rhyne will be as strong or<lb />stronger than they were in 1964.<lb /><lb />LETTERMEN-Thirteen lost with seventeen returning. Such Pirate standouts<lb />as tailback, Bill Cline; tackles, Ted Day and Colon Quinn; Ends, Dave Bumgarner,<lb />Whitty Bass, and Johnny Anderson; and wingbacks, Jerry Tolley, Larry Rudisill<lb />and Dinky Mills will be sorely missed. It will be mid-season before our Sophomores<lb />develop enought game experience which will graduate them into capable replace-<lb />ments for these lettermen, who were lost through graduation.<lb /><lb />Fullback, Bill Bailey, who returns after two years duty with Uncle Sam, will<lb />certainly take up a lot of the slack in the Pirate backfield. A tremendous kicker,<lb /><lb />Bailey averaged 39.2 yards during the 1963 season. He is also a fine ball<lb />carrier and a terror on defense. 7<lb /><lb />LOSSES- included ends Johnny Anderson, Whitty Bass and Dave Bumgarner;<lb />Tailback Bill Cline; tackles Wallace Collins, Ted Day, James Leftwich, Rubie<lb /><lb />Lewis and Colon Quinn; guard Skipper Duke; and wingbacks Dinky Mills, Larry<lb />Rudisill and Jerry Tolley.<lb /><lb />POSITION BY POSITION is<lb /><lb />Wingback-Robert Ellis is the only experienced man returning.<lb /><lb />Tailbacks-George Richardson and Sophomore Neal Hughes will be the<lb />replacements for All-American, Bill Cline.<lb /><lb />Fullback-Dave Alexander will have help here with the return of Bailey.<lb /><lb />Blocking back-Captain, Norman Swindell, has his old job back and will |<lb />have help from Ikey Bullard and two other Sophomores. |<lb /><lb />The Line-Tackles Mitchell Cannon, Leroy Cobb and Sammy Viverette<lb />centers Johnny Crew and Harold Glaettli, guards Corie McRae, Walter Bostic |<lb /><lb />and Jay Andrews; ends John McPhaul, and Churchill Grimes and center Johnny ; |<lb />Crew. Assistants-Fred Herron, Richie Gaskell,<lb />Billy Canty, Jack Powers.<lb /><lb />System-Pro-type Offense. Captain-Billy Tucker, and Gray Greddie.<lb /><lb />1965 Outlook-Coach Bob King feels that 1965 will be a good year for<lb />Furman primarily because of attitude and desire. King said he felt Spring Drills<lb />were one of the best he has had here and he feels the boys really want to play<lb />football. The Paladins will have an experienced first unit, however, lack of depth<lb />seems to be a problem. For this reason King has switched to a three-unit system<lb />for 1965 and plans to play he first unit both ways, with the second unit playing<lb />offense and the third unit playing defense. A total of 12 lettermen are lost from<lb />last year's squad, but a fine crop of sophomores from 1964's undefeated freshman<lb />team will be available and should provide some bright spots in King's plans. The<lb />strongest positions are at halfback and fullback. Five of the six halfbacks on the<lb />first three units are returning lettermen, and King has a couple of sophomores<lb />who just might crack the starting unit. Dunn, Clark Week, Gil Sturtzel.<lb /><lb />System-T. -.. Captain-Doug Buffone.<lb /><lb />1965 Outlook-It is safe to report that the University of Louisville football<lb />team will much be improved over the 1964 team that turned in a dismal 1-9<lb />record. A hefty and spirited group of sophomores will be on hand to supplement<lb />15 returning lettermen, thus giving the Redbirds more depth at each position,<lb />although in most instances the players will not be experienced. Benny Russell<lb />promises to be another of the Unitas-Giles-LaFrambeise style of quarterback and<lb />Louisville has never been "hurting at this position.'' In fact, Russell will proba ly<lb />enjoy better blocking and pass protection than any of the aforementioned trio so<lb />he should have a banner year. The finest linebacker in this section of the country<lb />will captain the Cardinals and lead the defense. He is Doug Buffone, a 6-2, 22)<lb />pound dandy from Sagamore, Pennsylvania. Also returning to help are tack. -~-<lb />Tom Helzer (6-4, 245) and Bill Janiak (6-2, 235); guard Bill Lettie (6-1, 214)<lb />and Wayne Patrick (6-2, 225), both possessing plenty of power. Sophomore half-<lb />backs standouts are John Kelter and Andy Williams, a real speedster. To sum it<lb />up, the Cardinals will have two good units this season, rather than the one they<lb />were forced to go with last year. This should help, even though they're likely to<lb />be out-manned in most games. But when you consider the fact that they lost<lb />five games by a touchdown or less last season and have that added depth, it<lb />points to an improved record.<lb /><lb />Returning Lettermen: 17-Quarterback: Benny Russell, Halfbacks: Jerry<lb />Buffone, Mike Dennis, Bill McMahon, Al Mac Farlane and Tony Mahoney; Full-<lb />back: Ron Hall, Center: Doug Buffone, Guards: Bill Lettie and Dick Pinski,<lb />Tackles: Bill Janiak, Don Brinley and Tom Helzer, and Ends: Mickey Settle, Jim<lb />Wyatt, Dick Bearman and Tom Ballard.<lb /><lb />Promising Newcomers-Ken Eggleston and John Waller, quarterbacks; Half-<lb />backs, John Kelter, and Andy Williams; Fullbacks, Ed Harmon and Wayne<lb />Patrick; Centers, Dave Velesig and Gunars Janelsins; Guards, Dave Bernahl,<lb />John Neidert, and Dave Kreimer; tackles, Joe Smith, and Ends, Steve Hodge and<lb />Wayne Galloway.<lb /><lb />1965 Schedule 1964 Record<lb />Sept. 18-Western Michigan (N) i on OPPS<lb />Sept. 25-Southern Illinois (N) : : es<lb />Oct. 2-North Texas (N) 0 Nasels 7 panes af<lb />Oct. 9-Dayton (N) 2] Dayton 7<lb />Oct. 16-East Carolina (N) 0 Tulsa 58<lb />- Oct. 23-Marshall (D) 6 Marshall 28<lb />Oct. 30-Wichita (N) 15 Wichita 23<lb />Nov. 6-Tulsa (D) 7 Kent State 14<lb />Nov. 13-Drake (D) 0 Memphis State 34<lb />Nov. 20-Kent State (N) 8 Drake 14<lb /><lb />18<lb /><lb />marmot a GS aT Stic ia all ay<lb />~~:<lb /></p>
