We are exceedingly proud to be a member<lb />of one of the nation's outstanding athletic conferences, and we pledge ourselves<lb />in every way to uphold the fine tradition which has been set in the past by ~<lb />nine other members. We are grateful to the alumni, student body, the citizens O<lb />our area and the members of our College family for their enthusiastic and un-<lb />selfish interest in our athletic program. Without the help of all our many friends,<lb />this giant step by the intercollegiate athletic program of East Carolina College,<lb />could not have been taken.<lb /><lb />Leo W. <lb />PREVIEW - 1964<lb /><lb />As the old saying goes, 'The third time is the charm,'' may not prove quite<lb />true as Coach Clarence Stasavich begins his third year at the helm of the Pirate<lb />ship. On paper, the Bucs are somewhat stronger at the interior line positions with<lb />the exception of the center spot. It also remains to be seen as to whether a<lb />new man at the fullback post will do as well as Tom Michel. A new blocking<lb />back must also be able to take up the slack left by Maurice Allen, who graduated.<lb /><lb />Schedule-will be stronger than the 1963 slate. The addition of Furman,<lb />Howard, Catawba and West Chester shows that the Pirates will have no "'breath-<lb />ers' this fall. Advance reports from the Indian camp show a top CC contender;<lb />West Chester, one of the nation's strongest small college teams; Howard, a<lb />southern power with major opponents on her schedule; and Furman, who will<lb />make a strong bid for the SC crown.<lb /><lb />Richmond, The Citadel, Presbyterian, Lenoir Rhyne, and Wofford will all<lb />be greatly improved according to their advance rosters. The crystal ball shows<lb />that the Pirates must be constantly on their toes if they are to equal their 9-1<lb />'63 record.<lb /><lb />Lettermen-Nineteen returning with ten lost. It will be hard to replace high<lb />scoring fullback Tom Michel, blocking back Maurice Allen, All-American line-<lb />backer Frankie Galloway and end Richard Huneycutt. These men were all sea-<lb />soned veterans and played a big part in East Carolina's fine record last year.<lb />Of the nineteen returning lettermen, the Bucs will have four experienced ends,<lb />four tackles and four guards to provide one of the strongest interior lines in the<lb />history of the school. Bill Cline will return for his last year as starting tailback<lb />and Dave Alexander will more than likely take over the first unit fullback post.<lb />Norman Swindell, who was starting center last year, has been moved to blocking<lb />back and will carry the No. ] signal calling assignment in '64. Wingback spot<lb />will be strong with Dinky Mills, Jerry Tolley and Larry Rudisill being the key<lb />personnel.<lb /><lb />LOSSES- included end Richard Huneycutt, guards Phil Harris and Rapth<lb />Royster, linebacker Frankie Galloway, fullback Tom Michel, blocking backs<lb />Maurice Allen and Ralph Kinsey, and wingback Ricky Jarrell.<lb /><lb />The Backfield-Wingbacks-Dinky Mills, Larry Rudisill and Jerry Tolley-<lb />experienced.<lb /><lb />Tailback-Bill Cline will carry the load here for his third year.<lb /><lb />Fullback-Dave Alexander will go for the first time as a regular offensive<lb />man.<lb /><lb />Blocking Back-Norman Swindell-highly capable but untried in college<lb />competition at this position.<lb /><lb />The Line-Four ends-Dave Bumgarner, John McPhaul, Richard Bass, and<lb />Johnny Anderson; four tackles-Colon Quinn, Jay Andrews, Ted Day and Rubie<lb /><lb />Lewis; and four guards-Neel Linker, Mitchell Cannon, Corie McRae and Skipper<lb />Duke-all 12 experienced.<lb /><lb />The Sophomores and switched personnel must come through to give the<lb />line balance.<lb /><lb />Offense-as always-The Stasavich Single Wing.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

For three critical weeks<lb />the eyes and hearts of the sports world were drawn to a bed at Greenville's Pitt<lb />Memorial Hospital. During this anxious period hundreds of telegrams, telephone<lb />calls, and letters flooded the wires, mail boxes, and switchboards - sending<lb />prayers for Stas's recovery from friends from about every corner of the U. S. Four<lb />weeks later his physician removed his name from the concerned roster. Today-<lb />he has fully recovered and back in the harness - going full speed in preparation<lb />to field his third football team for East Carolina.<lb /><lb />Last year and for the third time, Stas was voted Coach of the Year in<lb />District Three of the NCAA. Three of the games are scheduled for Greenville and the<lb />other two will be played on the road. .<lb /><lb />A freshman squad of approximately sixty is expected to report. to Coach<lb />Vansant at the beginning of the fall team. These men hail from North Carolina,<lb />Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey.<lb />On paper-most of these men show talented high school careers, but what<lb />happens during their college football days remains to be proven.<lb /><lb />1963 RESULTS 1964 SCHEDULE<lb /><lb />ity, Secs vig Opp: Oct. 3 Chowan College (Home) 8:00 P.M.<lb />6 Frederick Milito 42 Oct. 10 Frederick Military Aca.
