Herbert Deutsch and Robert<lb />Moog will share the overall responsibilities of planning and con-<lb />ducting the program of lectures, informal seminars, and composition<lb />workshops, Every participant will be able to use one of the compo-<lb />sition facilities for a minimum of fifteen hours per week, In<lb />order to allow for intensive individual composing, attendance will<lb />be strictly limited to twelve participants. 3<lb /><lb />AS presently planned, the overall program is intended to offer<lb />composers the opportunity to experiment and compose with electroni-<lb />cally generated sounds, to stimulate the exchange of ideas between<lb />composers, and to increase the communications between composer and<lb />instrument designer. The importance of communication between com-<lb />poser and engineer was revealed last summer, when Hr. Deutsch and<lb />ir, Moog worked together for three weeks. The exchange of ideas<lb />enabled the rapid implementation of concepts, and proved extremely<lb />valuable for both parties. Within these three weeks, Mr. Deutsch<lb />was able to develop basic techniques of "real time composition"<lb />(improvisation) of electronic music, and to compose several studies<lb />and larger pieces. The features of the equipment which Mr. Deutsch<lb />found most useful were subsequently incorporated into the designs<lb />of standard instruments which were introduced last fall by the<lb />R.A. Moog Co, Experienced electronic composers have spoken enthusi-<lb />astically about these new R.A, Moog instruments, and systems have<lb />been delivered to the studios of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic<lb />Music Center, University of Illinois Electronic Music Studio,<lb /><lb />Henry Street Playhouse (Alwin Nikolias) and Peabody Conservatory.<lb /><lb />The primary function of the forthcoming workshop and seminar<lb />is the instruction of composers in the principles and techniques<lb />of electronic music composition.         <p>to experiment in any area of electronic music composition in which<lb />they are interested. In fact, absolutcly no restriction will be<lb />placed on the work which the participants choose to undertake<lb />during the workshop sessions.<lb /><lb />Mr. Deutsch received a B.S. from Hofstra University and a<lb />B. Mus. and M. Mus. from Manhattan School of Music. His three most<lb />recent commissions include an electronic score for a dance drama<lb />at Smith College. This year, an electronic composition, The Road,<lb />was performed as part of the WNYC (New York) American Music Festival,<lb />and Hugh Ross conducted a work of his for chorus, brass and concrete<lb />tape mix at Carnegie Recital Hall. He is presently a member of the<lb />Hofstra music faculty, and is preparing a New York concert for the<lb />fall season.<lb /><lb />Mr. Moog holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia<lb />University, and a PhD. in Engineering Physics from Cornell. His<lb />interest in electronic musical instrument design led him to under-<lb />take the development and manufacture of electronic music compo-<lb />sition equipment. It is anticipated that the complementary skills<lb />and points of view of Mr. Deutsch and Mr. Moog will contribute to<lb />the value of the forthcoming workshop and seminar.<lb /><lb />PROGRAM CONTENT<lb /><lb />Three or four two-hour sessions per week will be devoted to<lb />lectures and seminars which all of the participants will be en-<lb /><lb />couraged to attend. The remaining time will be available for<lb />composition and other independent work,<lb /><lb />A series of six lectures on acoustics and electronics will be<lb />given by Robert Moog. Some of the topics to be discussed are:<lb /><lb />(a) The description and classification of musical sounds,<lb />(b) A brief introduction to basic electronic circuitry and<lb />components, ;<lb /><lb />(c) Review of the development of electronic music compo-<lb />sition equipment,<lb /><lb />(d) Description of new instruments for electronic music<lb />composition,<lb /><lb />(e) Psychoacoustical considerations in electronic music.<lb /><lb />seminars will be conducted by Herbert Deutsch. They will be<lb />of an open nature, with Mr. Deutsch presenting various problems<lb />and questions involving the serious application of electronic<lb />sources and materials into musical forms, It is the intent of<lb />these seminars that debate and discussion by the seminarians will<lb />at least shed light on some very large areas of contemporary musi-<lb />cal composition,</p>

        <p>There will be one seminar each week. They will be devoted to<lb />the following problems:<lb /><lb />1, Aesthetic problems: aleatory, formalism and improvisation<lb />in electronic composition,<lb /><lb />2. The question of notation,<lb /><lb />3. Problems encountered by the seminarians during their stay.<lb /><lb />As mentioned above, the participants will be able to compose<lb />with no restrictions whatever. Equipment for the composition of<lb />highly organized, precisely constructed pieces will be available<lb />as well as equipment for real time composition and improvisation.<lb />Herbert Deutsch and Robert Moog will be available to aid the par-<lb />ticipants in using the equipment.<lb /><lb />FACILITIES<lb /><lb />Three basic composition systems will be available. Each system<lb />will contain two or more voltage-controlled oscillators, two vol-<lb />tage-controlled amplifiers, and noise generating, reverberating,<lb />filtering, and mixing instruments. Control devices will include<lb />a five-octave keyboard and a linear "slide-wire" controller. Such<lb />a system enables a composer to conveniently perform most of the<lb />basic operations involved in electronic music composition, includ-<lb />ing the processing of concrete sounds. Each system will be located<lb />in a separate room with a work table and a stereo amplifier--loud-<lb />speaker,<lb /><lb />In addition to the three basic composition systems, a number<lb />of experimental instruments will be available. This will most<lb />likely include a polyphonic keyboard instrument, variable speed<lb />tape player, and experimental electronic percussion sets.<lb /><lb />It is anticipated that the supply of recording equipment<lb />will be limited, Therefore, all participants are strongly urged<lb />to bring tape recorders for their own use,<lb /><lb />A modest library of articles relating to electronic music<lb />will be available at the studio for use by the participants. The<lb />libraries of nearby schools (Cornell University and Ithaca College)<lb />will provide additional research material,<lb /><lb />QUALIFICATIONS OF APPLICANTS<lb /><lb />Applicants must be either practicing composers, or music<lb />students who have completed all undergraduate theory and ear<lb />training requirements, and who have had composition training and<lb />experience,<lb /><lb />Every applicant is requested to submit one or two of his com-<lb />positions, which, in his opinion, reveals his ability or potential<lb /><lb />ie<lb />J</p>

        <p>as a composer, Tape recordings are preferred. Scores of compo-<lb />sitions using conventional notation are acceptable. All scores and<lb />recordings will be returned.<lb /><lb />Student applicants are also requested to submit the names,<lb />addresses, and positions of two references (preferably composers<lb />or teachers) who are familiar with their work and ability.<lb /><lb />ACCOMODATIONS<lb /><lb />Trumansburg is a small town (population 1400) in the heart<lb /><lb />of the Finger Lakes Region of New York State, 15 miles from Ithaca<lb />(Cornell University and Ithaca College) and 80 miles from Rochester.<lb /><lb />yhile there are no dormitories in Trumansburg, suitable accomoda-<lb />tions can be arranged for participants and their families, Rooms<lb /><lb />in private homes, tourist homes, and motels will be available for<lb />participants with small families. For those who would like to<lb />"rough it", several good campsites lie within a few miles' radius<lb />of Trumansburg. Applications can be furnished on request. Lake-<lb />side cabins may be available for the duration of the workshop. A<lb />more complete selection of accomodations will be available in Ithaca,<lb />a twenty-minute drive from Trumansburg. Applicants are requested<lb /><lb />to state the type of accomodations that they will require when<lb />submitting their application,<lb /><lb />ENROLLMENT FEE<lb /><lb />All participants will be charged an enrollment fee of $75.<lb />Twenty-five dollars will be due upon acceptance of the application,<lb />and the remainder will be payable at the beginning of the session,<lb />Payment of this fee entitles the participant to attend all lectures<lb />and seminars, and to use the equipment and facilities of the R.A.<lb />Moog Studio. The fee does not include expendable materials such<lb />as magnetic tape Or music paper. Recording, splicing, and leader<lb />tape will be available at cost.<lb /><lb />It is understood that all material composed during the workshop-<lb />seminar will remain the sole property of the composers, but that the<lb />R.A. Moog Co. shall receive copies of the compositions, and have<lb />the privilege of using the compositions for demonstration and other<lb />non-profit purposes. It is further understood that concert perfor-<lb />mances of these works will at no time take place without the written<lb />permission of the composer.</p>
