<p>Electronic Instruments for the Musician<lb /><lb />K-A-MOOG CO-<lb /><lb />TRUMANSBURG, NEW YORK 14886 * AREA CODE 607 387-9200<lb /><lb />November 10, 1964<lb /><lb />Dr. Otto W. Henry, Chairman<lb />Department of Music<lb /><lb />Washington and Jefferson College<lb />Washington, Pennsylvania<lb /><lb />Dear Dr. Henry:<lb /><lb />Thank you for your November 6th letter. Your suggestions<lb />and comments are most welcome. We are the first to design and<lb />build "standard" instruments for electronic music composition,<lb />Our design effort is motivated entirely by our conversation<lb />and working experience with electronic music composers. The<lb />few instruments which we are now offering satisfy a wide-<lb />Spread need for relatively inexpensive equipment which is easy<lb />to operate, A simple studio may be assembled from our instru-<lb />ments for less than $1000. While this amount is not excessive<lb />aS electronic music studios go, it certainly does represent a<lb />Sizable investment for independent composers. We certainly<lb />do intend to include very simple modular instruments in our<lb />line. These will be priced somewhat lower than our present<lb />Oscillators and amplifiers.<lb /><lb />Permit me to ask you what your greatest needs are at this<lb />time. We are developing several new circuits and instruments.<lb />It is our practise to loan developmental prototypes to electronic<lb />muSic composers for trial and evaluation. For instance, do you<lb />now need a ring modulator or a bell gate? Would you be interested<lb />in trying a bank of oscillators?<lb /><lb />Except for recording equipment, we have a more or less com-<lb />plete studio here. I am mulling over the possibility of running<lb />an electronic music composition workshop next summer, My pre-<lb />sent idea is to invite two or three experienced composers and<lb />perhaps twice that many talented and interested composition<lb />Students. The workshop activities would consist of a course in<lb />basic "electronics for musicians" (which I would give), seminars<lb />in the techniques and esthetics of electronic music composition,<lb />and lots of actual experience in composing. May I have your<lb />ideas on such a workshop? Would you be interested in attend-<lb />ing yourself?<lb /><lb />SWERe<lb /><lb />_<lb />254 -19</p>

May I hear from you in the near future?<lb /><lb />Sincerely yours,<lb /><lb />Robert A. Moog</p>
