<lb />MINUTES OF THE STAFF MEETING<lb />Psychology Department<lb />February 7, 1972<lb /><lb />The Psychology Department held its February meeting in EP 104 at 4 o'clock<lb />February 7, 1972.<lb /><lb />PRESENT: Castellow, Martoccia, Daugherty, Corwin, Harrop, Means, Tacker, Moore<lb />Mitchell, Harris, Grossnickle, Long, Higgins, Stapleton. Students<lb />present: Thomas Harrell, Thomas Bates, Dennis Huntley, Kenneth Wright,<lb />Sandra Long.<lb /><lb />In the absence of the Chairman Dr. Mitchell presided.<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell announced that it would be appreciated by the office personnel if<lb />those desiring typing done get the work in at least three days before needed.<lb /><lb />This would give the secretary opportunity to schedule the work and use the student<lb />help more effectively.<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell presented a course proposal: Psychology 428: Somatopsychology of<lb />Disability developed by Vocational Rehabilitation. After a lengthy discussion a<lb />motion was made that the Department approve the course. Motion passed with three<lb />being opposed and eleven in favor.<lb /><lb />Dr. Tacker announced that he had been asked to chair a committee to select an<lb />article to be submitted for consideration for the Bisplinghoff Award. Dr. Moore,<lb />Dr. Roberts, and Dr. Means served on the Committee. Four papers were given to the<lb />Committee for selection of one and after considering each paper the Committee<lb />approved Dr. Mean's paper entitled "The hippocampectomy on alternation behavior<lb />and response to novelty" for the Psychology Department's entry.<lb /><lb />Dr. Tacker brought before the group for discussion a course proposal--Recreation<lb />427: Group Dynamics in Community Leadership. It is being proposed that this<lb />course be changed from a graduate course to an undergraduate course--Recreation<lb />327G. After a lengthy discussion it was felt that there was too much overlap with<lb />courses already offered in the Psychology Department and that the Department go<lb /><lb />on record as opposing this course. (The Department unanimously approved this<lb />position. )<lb /><lb />Mrs. Harris was recognized to speak on the results of a questionnaire sent out in<lb />connection with the self-study. The following items were brought before the group:<lb /><lb />1. That upperclass students be enlisted to help advise in General College and<lb />in the Department when new majors come into the Department and also during<lb />the summer orientation program with the understanding that they will be<lb />given no final authority but simply trained to help in this burdensome<lb />work. It was suggested that the honors students be recruited to help in<lb />this program.<lb /><lb />Mrs. Harris moved that an ad hoc committee be set up that would have<lb />faculty and student members to work out the details as to how the students<lb />would be selected and trained and to plan some kind of continuity for the<lb />program. Motion approved and passed unanimously.</p>

<lb />2. The students felt that a great need for an orientation program for new<lb />majors existed, and would be very helpful, the details to be worked out<lb />by the student/faculty committee that would be set up to study the work<lb />of student advising. Mrs. Harris moved that this committee be combined<lb />with the ad hoc committee mentioned above. Motion passed unanimously.<lb /><lb />3. The questionnaire showed that the students felt that all standing<lb />committees except those dealing specifically with the Comprehensives<lb />Examination, Graduate Admissions Committee, and Graduate Student<lb />Exceptions Committee should have student members. Dr. Means moved that<lb />one graduate and one undergraduate student be added to each committee<lb />except those listed above; the students to be selected by the Chairman<lb />of the Committee. Dr. Daugherty amended the motion to read: that the<lb />students be selected by the Committee Chairman in collaboration with the<lb />Departmental Chairman and that a minimum of one graduate and one under-<lb />graduate be appointed to each committee. Mr. Harrop suggested that Psi<lb />Chi be given the responsibility of working out a procedure to select the<lb />names of students to be considered for the committee assignments.<lb /><lb />The above motion with amendments was passed unanimously.<lb />Mrs. Harris asked that the matter of students attending the monthly staff meetings<lb />be placed on the agenda for the next meeting for discussion.<lb /><lb />Mrs. Harris asked that the Student/Faculty Student Advisory Committee be re-<lb />activated. This, she felt, should be put on the agenda for discussion at the<lb />next staff meeting.<lb /><lb />Sandra Long brought before the group for discussion the advisability of putting<lb />the file of standardized tests in the Library so they would be available to studeni<lb />needing them for study in their courses. These would be under the strict super-<lb />vision of the person in charge of the library and would not be checked out<lb /><lb />to anyone. A discussion was held on this but no action taken.<lb /><lb />Dr. Means announced that he was holding a colloquium Tuesday; February 15 from 3-5<lb />in EP 129. Dr. R. S$. Tacker will speak on Behavior Modirication in the Classroom.<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell announced that Psi Chi would meet February 17.<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell announced that the spring meeting of NCPA would be held at East<lb />Carolina April 21-22. Dr. Karras, Program Chairman, has announced that the progra:<lb />would be Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. There will be a dinner meeting<lb />Friday night at Brook Valley Country Club at 7:30. This is to be a dutch affair<lb />and the cost will be $5.00. The topics to be discussed will be directed toward<lb />problems of drug usage and treatment. Students should be encouraged to attend.<lb /><lb />The meeting adjourned at 5:15.<lb /><lb />Che. C.
