          <lb />MINUTES OF THE STAFF MEETING / : fy<lb />Psychology Department fous [-] /<lb />December 13, 1971<lb /><lb />The Psychology Department held its December meeting in EP 104 at 4 o'clock,<lb />December 13, 1971.<lb /><lb />PRESENT: Prewett, Castellow, Corwin, Lao, Higgins, Whitley, Moore, Tacker,<lb />Grossnickle, Daugherty, Means, Roberts, Mitchell, Stapleton,<lb />Martoccia, Long, and Williams.<lb /><lb />Motion was made that the reading of the minutes of the last meeting be dispensed witi.<lb />and they be approved as written. Motion passed unanimously.<lb /><lb />Dr. Moore, reporting for the Comprehensives Committee, made the following report:<lb />(See attached.)<lb /><lb />Motion was made that this report be accepted; motion passed unanimously.<lb /><lb />Dr. Tacker moved that the Department take a look at the items submitted several<lb />months ago for the comprehensives examination and see if any revision is needed at<lb />this time. Motion passed unanimously.<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell reported for the Curriculum Committee. The following report was given:<lb /><lb />That a new course--Psychology 427: Principles of Learning for 3 hours credit<lb /><lb />be adopted and that it be substituted for Psychology 425: Theories of Learning<lb />and that Psychology 425 be used as an elective. He also proposed that Psychology<lb />?81: Theories and Systems be dropped from the curriculum--these changes to<lb />become effective Fall Quarter, 1972. Dr. Mitchell moved that this report be<lb />adopted. Motion passed with one member opposing.<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell moved that Psychology 427 become a prerequisite for Psychology 469<lb />and Psychology 473. Motion passed.<lb /><lb />Another new course--Psychology 431: Seminar in Experimental Psychology for<lb />3-hours credit was presented for consideration. This course would be a required<lb />course in the general-experimental graduate program and would be offered only<lb /><lb />in the fall. Dr. Mitchell moved that this course be accepted. After a lengthy<lb />discussion Dr. Mitchell withdrew his motion and moved that the Curriculum<lb />Committee be charged with the responsibility of preparing another course for<lb /><lb />ene hour credit for each quarter for three successive quarters in a seminar-type<lb />manner. It was further suggested that this meeting of the Curriculum Committee<lb />be an open meeting. Motion passed unanimously.<lb /><lb />Dr. Roberts moved that the Curriculum Committee also consider the idea of making<lb />Psychology 280: History of Psychology a 300G course.<lb /><lb />Dr. Long, reporting for an Ad Hoc Committee to study an alternate plan for foreign<lb />language requirement. The following recommendation was accepted with one member<lb />abstaining:<lb /><lb />The Psychology Department permits a substitution of the following in lieu of<lb />the graduate language requirement: Not less than five hours nor more than two<lb /><lb />Dr. Prewett congratulated Dr. Castellow on the completion of his Ph.D.</p>

The student will<lb />2 consult with his major advisor in order to decide which course or courses<lb /><lb />will provide him with the most effective implements for his individual research.<lb /><lb />Additional alternative courses may be considered, where appropriate, subject<lb /><lb />to the approval of the student's program director, faculty advisor and the<lb /><lb />Graduate Student Exceptions Committee: Biology 350G: Histology; Engl. 202:<lb /><lb />Scientific Writing; Math 200: Introduction to Digital Computation; Math 201:<lb /><lb />Computer Organization and Programming; Math 307: Mathematical Statistics;<lb /><lb />Phil. 281: Introduction to the Philosophy of Science; Phys. 228: Introductory<lb /><lb />Electronics; Phys 317: Electricity; Soci. 289: Community Organization;<lb /><lb />Soci. 370: Methods of Social Research; the fifth course in a foreign language.<lb /><lb />Dr. Martoccia, reporting for the Library Committee, announced that the book list<lb />had been reactivated but the Department only receives two copies. Anyone wishing<lb />to see the list may do so by coming by his office.<lb /><lb />Dr. Higgins, Chairman of an Ad Hoc Committee for Teacher Evaluation, made the<lb />following report: (See attached).<lb /><lb />Dr. Higgins moved that the report be accepted and submitted to the campus-wide<lb />Ad Hoc Committee on Teacher Evaluation. Motion seconded. Dr. Grossnickle moved<lb />that the recommendations be amended to read as follows:<lb /><lb />"The Department sends these comments with severe reservations because<lb /><lb />of the questionable assumptions of the entire project."<lb />The amendment was seconded. Motion was defeated.<lb /><lb />Mrs. Harris moved that the vote be postponed until some clarification could be made.<lb />&amp; fation seconded and passed. Dr. Higgins was instructed to follow through on this.<lb /><lb />fc;, Harris was recognized to speak about the self-study report.
