He urged attendance by<lb />staff, if possible.<lb /><lb />The spring meeting of the North Carolina Psychological Association will be<lb />held in conjunction with the spring meeting of the North Carolina Academy<lb />of Science at East Carolina University April 21-22. He further stated that<lb />plans were progressing toward the program.<lb /><lb />Mrs. Harris was recognized to speak about the Self-Study report. (Mrs. Harris is<lb />serving as Chairman of the Department's Steering Committee.) The first meeting was<lb />held at 2:30 p.m., November 1 at which time a general overview of the entire Study<lb />ie was taken. She asked for the full cooperation of the staff and urged them to return<lb />the questionnaires they were to be given Tuesday morning by noon Friday, November 5.<lb />These are sections II and VI of the Study. She announced that the Department's<lb />standing committees would be asked to handle the appropriate sections of the Study.<lb /><lb />Dr. Prewett thanked Dr. Grossnickle and Mrs. Stapleton for their work in preparing<lb />on organizational chart for the Department.<lb /><lb />Dr. Roberts has been asked to chair an ad hoc committee to consider what we can<lb />honestly tell students they can do with an A. B. Degree in psychology. He is to<lb />choose the other members of the committee. He is exploring the possibility of<lb />securing funds from the National Science Foundation to conduct this study.<lb /><lb />Mrs. Harris, reporting for the President's Advisory Council, said the minutes of<lb />each meeting would be posted on the Departmental Bulletin Board for staff to read<lb />She asked that anyone desiring an item placed on the agenda to please contact her.<lb /><lb />Mrs. Harris asked that the matter of a student declaring a double major under the<lb />new catalog be considered. Dr. Grossnickle asked that this be tabled until further<lb />information could be secured that could be brought to the next staff meeting.<lb /><lb />Dr. Prewett, reporting for the Graduate Admissions Committee, stated that Ann Waring<lb />had been admitted to the clinical program, Helen Cleveland to the School program<lb />with the understanding the needed courses be worked out in collaboration with Dr.<lb />Corwin, Dr. Prewett, and herself; Linda Peer Fleming to the School program, and<lb /><lb />&amp; Neil Hornstein was rejected.</p>

          <lb />
          <lb />Dr. Roberts asked for a statement of policy regarding minimum GRE scores for ad-<lb />mission to the graduate program. It was stated that the Graduate School require-<lb />ments were a minimum of 900 with a B average or 950 and that this was the require-<lb /><lb />&amp; ment for the Department, unless there are very strong extenuating circumstances<lb />involved.<lb /><lb />Dr. Prewett further stated that any faculty member was welcome to attend any of the<lb />meetings of the Graduate Admissions Committee.<lb /><lb />Dr. Means was recognized to speak on an ad hoc committee he had been asked to chair<lb />pertaining to research. The following staff members are also on the Committee:<lb /><lb />Dr. Lao, Dr. Roberts, Dr. Tacker, Thomas Bates from the undergraduate students, and<lb />Ann Waring, of the graduate students. The Committee is to be called The Faculty-<lb />Student Research Committee. The purpose of the Committee is to encourage research<lb />on the part of faculty and students. Dr. Means told of three ideas they hope to<lb />have carried out:<lb /><lb />1. A series of colloquia to meet once a month just for the faculty and students<lb />of the Psychology Department to discuss research being done by them or to<lb />explore ideas for research. These meetings to be very informal and attend~<lb />ance voluntary.<lb /><lb />2. Efforts are going to be made to make everyone aware of the research that is<lb />being done in the Department. Abstracts of the various research activities<lb />will be made available to interested parties.<lb /><lb />3. A more formal colloquium to be held once a quarter at which an outstanding<lb />speaker in a variety of fields will be secured. After the talk a social<lb />hour will be held to give people an opportunity to meet and discuss the<lb /><lb />ee research with the speaker.<lb /><lb />The Department unanimously approved this Committee as a standing committee.<lb /><lb />Dr. Long, reporting for the Schedule Committee, reported that they had met and con-<lb />sidered the preregistration analysis for the winter quarter but felt that no addi-<lb />tional sections could be opened up to accommodate the very large demand for certain<lb />courses. This is brought about by the lack of the staff to cover these classes.<lb /><lb />He further stated that the Registrar had been asked to encourage students to seek<lb />elective courses in other departments at this time.<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell announced that the Curriculum Committee had had several meetings and<lb />another was scheduled for next week at which time they hoped to complete the work<lb />on the revised graduate programs. He further asked that if anyone had a new course<lb />they wanted considered to contact hia.<lb /><lb />Dr. Moore, Comprehensives Committee Chairman, reported that the comprehensives had<lb />been given and that nine clinical students took both the morning and afternoon<lb />sessions and two make-up exams were given. They will be scored and the results<lb />circulated early next week.<lb /><lb />Dr. Martoccia reported that the emergency library fund had been expended.<lb /><lb />Dr. Grossnickle asked the staff to please announce to their classes if anyone was<lb />interested in affiliating with Psi Chi to contact either Dr. Corwin or himself.<lb /><lb />@ Dr. Daugherty reported that his Graduate Committee on Exceptions had not been called<lb />upon.</p>

        <p>
          <lb />
          <lb />Dr. Long, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Graduate Student Handbook, re-<lb />ported that the Committee was working on it and they should have it ready for<lb />distribution soon.<lb /><lb />Dr. Tacker, Chairman of the 50/51 Committee, had no report.<lb /><lb />Dr. Prewett urged each member to read the Senate minutes as they are circulated.<lb />Dr. Roberts asked that they be posted on the Departmental Bulletin Board rather<lb />than circulated by a buck sheet. There was opposition to this request so the<lb />buck sheet will continue to be used.<lb /><lb />Mrs. Harris, as a member of the General College Advisory Board, asked for the<lb />feelings of the Department about a student being allowed to drop courses after the<lb />regular drop/add deadline had passed. There was a great deal of discussion on<lb />this question. Mrs. Stapleton moved that the Department endorce a resolution<lb />asking the University Administration to consider amending the rules to allow a<lb />student to drop a course without penalty but with his advisor's consent up until<lb />two weeks prior to examinations. Motion was seconded. The resolution was amended<lb />to read: 2 student ba allowed to drop a course without peralty after s conference<lb /><lb />; te Sa x : x ae oo . ee: : ?~ *s Ps . ¢ ay rhe s . t Ss - os, x ey ee . os 2 a<lb />© = 4 + * iN a © es - oe st get: * ?~ { E hg : © m4 . q',4, Ries, Ea Ss é<lb />Se aan Spe h de re ee ek Od te x fy be: We te Jak ee Eee Cee er, KS oN ele Mie f rf e) Poe ee fe a ¥e yt } facw Stam # is Kick Std 2%<lb />te oe sats<lb /><lb />Oz. This was agreed upon.<lb /><lb />Dr. Means asked how many staff members would be willing to buy one journal and<lb />contribute it to the Psi Chi library. A discussion followed butno action was<lb />taken.<lb /><lb />Dr. Tacker asked for a clarification of the rule saying an incomplete must be<lb />removed by two weeks prior to the next quarter the student is enrolled. He<lb />mentioned the fact that many times a student brings the work in at the eleventh<lb />hour and it is impossible to grade the work and get the grade in by the deadline.<lb />The consensus was that each professor should use his own judgement in this matter<lb />as to how he handles this. ,<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell moved for adjournment and the meeting was adjourned at 5:30 p.m.<lb /><lb />goa ee te<lb /><lb />Clinton R.
