<lb />MINUTES OF STAFF MEETING<lb />Psychology Department<lb />March 29, 1971<lb /><lb />The Psychology Department held its March meeting at 4 o'clock in EP 103 on March<lb />29, 1971.<lb /><lb />All members were present except Mrs. Stapleton, Dr. Kinzie and Mr. Whitley, who<lb />had conflicting meetings.<lb /><lb />Dr. Prewett presided and announced that the North Carolina Psychological Association<lb />would meet in Winston-Salem, North Carolina April 29-May 1. Dr. Prewett will be<lb />installed as president at this meeting. The Southeastern Psychological Association<lb />meeting is scheduled for the same time in Miami, and the North Carolina Mental<lb />Health Research Council is also meeting at that time in Wilmington.<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell informed the group that as Chairman of the North Carolina Psychological<lb />Association Legislative Committee he had been in conference with Mr. Horton Rountree<lb />in regard to steps to be taken in order to raise the fee for licensure and renewal<lb />for psychologists in North Carolina. It is recommended that the fee for licensure<lb />be raised from $25 to $50 and the renewal fee from $5 to $10. He states that this<lb />was necessary from a financial standpoint as the Licensing Board was in financial<lb />difficulties at this time; he also pointed out that North Carolina has the lowest<lb />fee in the country.<lb /><lb />Dr. Corwin announced that Psi Chi meeting was to be held Thursday night, April 1<lb />at 7:30 and asked all the professors to inform their classes of this meeting.<lb /><lb />Mrs. Harris asked about the advisability of having students members on the<lb />Departmental committees. This was discussed briefly but no action taken.<lb /><lb />Dr. Grossnickle presented the names for consideration for outstanding senior award.<lb />Kenneth Richard Wrightwas elected as the outstanding senior in the Department.<lb /><lb />Dr. Long announced that the Graduate Admissions Committee had met several times<lb />recently and 13 students have been admitted to the clinical program. Dr. Mitchell<lb />announced that 4 had been admitted to the general-theoretical program and Dr. Corwin<lb />stated that one had been admitted to the school program.<lb /><lb />Dr. Tacker reported for the 50/51 Committee. The Committee recommended the adoption<lb />of Morgan and King as the text for these courses with the first ten chapters to be<lb />covered in Psychology 50 and the last nine chapters in Psychology 51. Dr. Mitchell<lb />seconded this recommendation and it passed with one dissenting vote.<lb /><lb />Mrs. Harris made a motion that the 50/51 Committee consider the problem of pro-<lb />tection of the test item file and the question of Departmental mid-term and final<lb />exams for Psychology 50. Motion was seconded and passed unanimously.<lb /><lb />Mrs. Harris asked whether the 5 hours transferred in from other colleges would meet<lb />the requirements for the general introduction psychology~-Psychology 50 and<lb />Psychology 5l--as the prerequisite for other courses. It was ruled that this would<lb />be equivalent to Psychology 50 only.<lb /><lb />Dr. Betty Jane Corwin was elected representative to the Faculty Senate for the<lb />Department.</p>

He also stated that he had some information in the office regarding<lb />the possibility of research grants from the N. C. Committee on Law and Order and<lb />invited interested staff members to examine the material.<lb /><lb />Dr. Rogers announced that the North Carolina Board of Technology might also be<lb />a source of funds for grants. He further stated that this Board did tend to be<lb />highly industrial oriented and interested in immediate results.<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell, reporting for the Curriculum Committee, presented the following<lb />courses for consideration:<lb /><lb />Psychology 307G--Psychology of Language--3 hours credit.<lb /><lb />Psychology 313G--Laboratory Methods in Physiological Psychology--3 hours credit.<lb />Psychology 319--Laboratory in Interpersonal Theory and Behavior--3 hours credit.<lb />Psychology 422--Group Dynamics--3 hours credit.<lb /><lb />Psychology 477--Seminar in Group Psychotherapy--3 hours credit.<lb /><lb />After discussing each course the staff voted to accept the above listed courses.<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell also asked that the rule regarding a new course being passed by the<lb />Curriculum Committee before being brought before the full staff be waived and<lb />Psychology 489--Advanced Experimental Psychology--be considered at this time.<lb />Motion made and passed that this be permitted. After a full discussion motion was<lb />made and passed that this course be referred back to the Curriculum Committee.<lb /><lb />Meeting adjourned at 3:50.<lb /><lb />Clinton R.
