MINUTES OF STAFF MEETING
Psychology Department
January 25, 1971
The Psychology Department held its January staff meeting in PE 104 at 4 o'clock,
January 25, 1971. All members were present.
Dr. Prewett presided and expressed his pleasure at being back and also his
appreciation for the many courtesies extended him during his recent illness.
Dr. Daugherty asked for some information about the new general education re-
quirements and how they would be applied to students now enrolled. Dr.
Grossnickle said that they have been passed by the Senate and will go into
effect when the new catalog goes into effect, which, it is understood, will be
following graduation. A student may change to a later catalog if he wishes
but if so he must do so in its entirety. However, it should be pointed out
that other departments may change their minor requirements between now and the
last meeting of the Faculty Senate and these changes would be included in the
new catalog.
Dr. Prewett called on Mrs. Stapleton who is the newly appointed Reporter for
the Department. She asked for anyone having items of general public interest
to please put a note in her mail box no later than Friday, January 29. And
also from now on she would appreciate receiving a note from the faculty members
if they have any news items they would like sent to the News Bureau.
Dr. Mitchell was recognized to report for the Departmental Curriculum Committee.
The following new courses were proposed:
1. Psychology 312G--Human Brain Function and Dysfunction (3). The
Committee recommended the adoption of this course. Dr. Rogers
seconded the motion and asked for a statement as to what quarter
this course would be offered. After a discussion it was decided
it should be offered "on demand.'' The motion passed unanimously.
2. Psychology 355G--Problems in Educational Psychology (3). The
Committee recommended this course be approved after it is checked
with the School of Education. The prerequisite was to read
Psychology 305. Dr. Rogers seconded the recommendation and the
course was adopted unanimously.
3. The Committee recommended that Psychology 100 be dropped and a
course added that would be Psychology 51 for three hours credit.
This would eliminate the overlap that is experienced between
Psychology 50 and Psychology 100. After a lengthy discussion
Dr. Tacker moved that this matter be referred back to the Curriculum
Committee for further study by that Committee and the 50/100 Committee
and recommendations be made at another called staff meeting set for
Monday, February 1, 1971 at 4 o'clock.
Mrs. Harris reported for the Ad Hoc Committee appointed at the last staff
meeting to study the problem of psychology majors taking too many courses
in the area of child, adolescence, education and related fields. The
Committee recommended that the psychology major be required to take at least
ai hours from Psychology 206, z2zZl1, 280, 290, 3116, 314, 322 and 3/5G. tre.
Harris recommended that this be adopted; Dr. Mitchell seconded the motion.
Mrs. Harris amended the motion to include Psychology 312G. The motion was
defeated with seven voting for and nine against it.
Dr. Martoccia was recognized to make a report for the Comprehensives
Committee. He called on Dr. Tacker, new temporary chairman of the Committee,
to make the report. Dr. Tacker reported that the Committee recommended
that Elizabeth Duncan be approved as passing the comprehensives examination.
Dr. Mitchell seconded the motion and it was passed.
Dr. Long moved that the meeting be adjourned until Monday, February l.
