<lb />MINUTES OF THE STAFF MEETING<lb /><lb />Psychology Department<lb />es November 16, 1970<lb /><lb />The Psychology Department held its November meeting in EP 104 at 4 o'clock,<lb />November 16, 1970.<lb /><lb />All members were in attendance except Mrs. Stapleton who had a conflicting meeting.<lb />The following items were discussed;<lb /><lb />1. Dr. Harry Williams, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee to consider the new<lb />grading system for graduate students, reported as follows:<lb /><lb />a. The Committee felt there should be a careful differentiation between<lb />the grade of P and Z.<lb /><lb />b. That if a student made a Z on a course it should imply a reduced load<lb />for the next quarter.<lb /><lb />c. The Committee presented to the group for consideration the thought<lb />that a grade of H should be given careful thought and that it should<lb />not be felt an H should necessarily be given in every class. A<lb />lengthy discussion followed but no decision was reached.<lb /><lb />Dr. Grossnickle moved that the Departmental Office develop a form explaining<lb />the grading system with a blank left on the form to be filled in for each<lb /><lb />?&amp; student when a letter of reference is called for. Dr. Williams seconded the<lb />motion and it passed with one dissenting vote--Dr. Roberts.<lb /><lb />Dr. Williams presented the second half of the Ad Hoc Committee report per-<lb />taining to the policy of employment or activities of graduate students while<lb />they are in the Department. The following recommendation was made:<lb /><lb />That individual graduate students must receive written approval from<lb /><lb />the Department Chairman for any professional activities they expect<lb /><lb />to engage in-~-paid or unpaid. That the Departmental Chairman appoint<lb /><lb />a committee to study this problem and present suggestions as to how to<lb /><lb />handle it.<lb /><lb />Dr. Moore proposed an amendment to read: "Failure to comply to this<lb />rule would result in severe disciplinary action."<lb /><lb />Dr. Daugherty offered a second amendment to be considered before a<lb />vote is taken: that a 3-man committe be appointed to write out very<lb />carefully a statement as to what are considered professional activities.<lb /><lb />Dr. Rogers moved that this whole question be tabled until the Committee<lb />can clarify what is meant by "professional activities.'' Motion seconded<lb />and passed with seven in favor and six opposed,<lb /><lb />2. Dr. Mitchell, Chairman of the Departmental Curriculum Committee, was called<lb />on for a report. He recognized Dr. Grossnickle who moved that a prerequisite<lb /><lb />&amp; be added for Psychology 343G--Psychology of Organizational Behavior, the pre-<lb />quisite to read: ''Psychology 241, graduate standing, or permission of the<lb />instructor."<lb /><lb />Mrs. Harris seconded the motion and it was passed unanimously.</p>

<lb />Dr. Mitchell presented a proposal for a new graduate course: Behavior<lb />Therapy Techniques for three hours credit; the course to require two hours<lb />&amp; of lecture and two hours practicum per week; the prerequisites to be<lb />Psychology 425 and Psychology 469. Dr. Moore was called on to explain how<lb />this course would be fitted into the present curriculum. He stated that<lb />the course in Behavior Modification--Psychology 469--would be used as a<lb />seminar and would be a course in theory and the Behavior Therapy Techniques<lb />course would be a course for practical experience for the students. He<lb />further stated that the Department had access to the children at the DEC<lb />clinic and also the ARC population for the practicum experience. He felt<lb />this would be a course that would be practical for both the clinical and<lb />general-theoretical students. Dr. Roberts asked that "or permission of<lb />the instructor" be added to the prerequisites. This was not agreed upon.<lb /><lb />Motion was made and unanimously passed that the course be accepted.<lb /><lb />3. Dr. Mitchell reported from the Graduate Council that shortly the Department<lb />would be asked to respond to a questionnaire about their desires for an<lb />option to the foreign language requirement. He stated that Dr. Pignani<lb />had said the Math Department is in a position to offer two options:<lb /><lb />Math 200, Introduction to Digital Computation and Math 228, Elementary<lb />Statistical Methods I and Math 229, Elementary Statistical Methods II.<lb />These would also be a computer workshop program to be used in lieu of: the<lb />foreign language which would go along with Math 200.<lb /><lb />The meeting adjourned at 5:15.<lb /><lb />. j<lb />: 2 ?<lb /><lb />A of ge A =<lb />thy $ wo we Meh. 3 , =<lb /><lb />/ aaa<lb />Thomas E.
