<lb />MINUTES OF THs STAFF MEETING<lb />Psychology Department<lb />April-May Meeting<lb /><lb />The April-May, 1970 staff meeting of the Psychology Department met at 2:00<lb />May 5, 1970 in EP104 with all members present.<lb /><lb />Several special committees have been operating in the Psychology Department<lb />for the past five months. The major committee was the graduate staff established<lb />to produce a proposal for the doctoral degree in psychology.<lb /><lb />At this meeting, the various points developed by the other departments in<lb />their proposals were noted and suggestions were received for improving the<lb />psychology proposal should it be asked to be more refined at a subsequent presen-<lb />tation. Dr. Grossnickle noted that the proposal needed to be more explicit in<lb />terms of the clinical-community aspect of the doctoral program. He pointed out,<lb />with staff agreement, that this was a creative idea but that it did not receive<lb />as strong attention as it should due to the way it was written up.<lb /><lb />Mention was also made by several staff members that the program carried several<lb />inconsistencies in terms of hours required and electives; Dr. Prewett pointed<lb />out that all of these criticisms were well taken and that we would re-write the<lb />proposal if the Graduate Council asked us to do so.<lb /><lb />Dr. Prewett pointed out that several staff honors have accrued this spring. Dr.<lb />Long has been elected to the American Psychological Association Executive Com-<lb />mittee, Dr. Prewett has been elected President of the North Carolina Psychological<lb />Association, and Dr. Grossnickle has been elected Regional Vice-President of<lb /><lb />Psi Chi.<lb /><lb />Dr. Martoccia noted that the comprehensive examination in psychology would be<lb />given on Saturday, May 9.<lb /><lb />Dr. Prewett announced that five scholarships worth $100 each would be awarded<lb />this year by the psychology staff, by Psi Chi, and by the Scholarship Committee<lb />at East Carolina. These students will be announced later as winners.<lb /><lb />Dr. Prewett announced that 24 students had been accepted for graduate study for<lb />next year in the Psychology Department,<lb /><lb />The staff voted to extend an invitation to Dr. Dennis Roberts to become a new<lb />staff member. If he should not accept the offer, Dr. Rufus Hughes of Johns<lb />Hopkins was designated the first alternate.<lb /><lb />The meeting adjourned at 4:00.<lb /><lb />(OfhicaA<lb /><lb />"Clinton R. Prewett, Chairman<lb />Department of Psychology<lb /><lb />ad</p>
