<lb />MINUTES OF THE STAFF MEETING<lb />Psychology Department<lb />January 26, 1970<lb /><lb />The Psychology Department held its January meeting in EP 104 at 4 o'clock, Monday,<lb />January 26, 1970 with all members present.<lb /><lb />The following items of business were discussed and acted upon:<lb /><lb />Dr. Prewett asked that the staff consider whether or not the Department should<lb />prepare a preliminary proposal for a doctoral program to be submitted to the<lb />Ad Hoc Committee.<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell moved that such a proposal be prepared. Dr. Grossnickle seconded<lb />the motion. In the discussion which followed Dr. Rogers questioned the likeli-<lb />hood that a proposal from the Psychology Department might be rejected due to<lb /><lb />the lack of adequate space and facilities (as the Department is on record feel-<lb />ing advanced programs would be impossible without additional facilities). Dr.<lb />Prewett stated that the building request was being re-submitted; that the present<lb />lack of adequate space and facilities might figure into consideration of our pro-<lb />posal, but probably other departments submitting proposals also have present<lb />lacks. Mrs. Harris questioned the psychology area to be covered by the proposal.<lb />Dr. Mitchell felt that any proposed program would require a strong program (but<lb />not necessarily a degree program) in experimental. Dr. Tacker concurred. Dr.<lb />Prewett felt that proposal might be rather broad, as such proposals have been<lb />submitted by other schools. Dr. Prewett reminded the group that there are many<lb />questions still to be explored and that the preliminary proposal would require<lb /><lb />a comprehensive plan. After more discussion the question was called, and the<lb />motion passed unanimously. Dr. Prewett stated that further action on the pre-~<lb />liminary proposal could not be taken until after the Ad Hoc Committee to Con-<lb />sider Doctoral Program meets again.<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell presented a report from the University Curriculum Committee re the<lb />report from the Special General Education Committee. The latter Committee has<lb />recommended changes reducing the number of quarter hours of general education<lb />credits required, and allowing students more free electives. Of particular<lb />importance to the Psychology Department is the possibility of including psychology<lb />in the science, rather than social studies, area of general education. The staff<lb />was asked to express a preference between these two fields. The majority pre-<lb />ferred inclusion under science. A vote was also called for to indicate whether<lb /><lb />or not Psychology 50 and Psychology 100 should be consolidated into a 4 hour<lb />course to fit the science sequence; this carried8-3. The staff was reminded that<lb />the 4 hour course decision would hinge upon the Curriculum Committee's decision<lb />regarding psychology as meeting requirement for a science course, and that the<lb />entire proposal of revision was not yet adopted. (Should the Curriculum Committee<lb />approve the basic Special General Education Committee's proposal but place psycho-<lb />logy under social studies, the consolidation of 50/100 would result in a 5 hour<lb />course.)<lb /><lb />No further urgent business being brought forward, the meeting was adjourned.<lb /><lb />Hazel Stapleton, Recording Secretary</p>
