MINUTES OF APRIL STAFF MEETINGPsychology DepartmentApril 14, 1969The Psychology Department held its April meeting in EP 104 at 4 o'clock, April 14,1969.PRESENT: Prewett, Mitchell, Rogers, Harris, Kinzie, Tacker, Williams, Long,Martoccia, Latham, Dixon, Moore, Khatena, Daugherty, Steinberg,Stapleton, Higgins.The Admissions Committee reported on the number of students currently admitted tothe graduate programs. Also, the staff discussed the various persons who had beenadmitted to doctoral programs in other schools.Motion by Rogers that final orals for the Master's Degree be open to the Psychologyfaculty. Further, that the notice to the faculty be sent out so that interestedindividuals could arrange to attend. This was interpreted by the staff to be atleast /2 hours before the date. It is the responsibility of the thesis chairman topost such notice. Motion seconded by Kinzie and carried by vote of the staff.Motion by Dixon that only members of the thesis committee should vote as to whetheror not the candidate had passed the examination. Motion seconded by Khatena andpassed by the staff.Dr. Martoccia announced that the last comprehensive examinations are being read bythe staff. Findings will have to be deferred for action until the staff meetingduring the summer school.The case of Myree Jolly was discussed. Motion by Rogers that Mrs. Jolly do whateveris required under her admitting catalog with regard to the comprehensive examination.Motion carried.The staff discussed the idea of an honors designation on the transcript of gradu-~ating seniors. It was decided that to be automatically eligible for HONORS INPSYCHOLOGY a student would have to have a minimum of 3.4 average in psychology withno grade below a C with a minimum number of hours in psychology at East Carolinabeing 35. Any other cases which the faculty deemed meritorious may be referred tothe staff for vote in regard to honors. (For example, a student might have a 3.4average but have one grade below a C. Such an individual would not be automaticallyeligible for honors in psychology but could be voted upon by the staff upon the re-commendation of a faculty member.) It was decided that such action would be re-troactive to go back to the installation of Psi Chi, which was December 8, 1964.The Departmental office will assist and develop a list of names of students whoes(4, AceClinton R. Prewett, Chairmanmight be considered eligible for this honor. .
