          <lb />MINUTES OF JANUARY STAFF MEETING<lb />&amp; Psychology Department<lb />January 13, 1969<lb /><lb />The Psychology Department held its January meeting in EP 104 at 4 o'clock, January<lb />13, i969,<lb /><lb />PRESENT: Prewett, Moore, Martoccia, Latham, Harris, Tacker, Daugherty, Mitchell<lb />Kinzie, Hedges, Williams, Long, Grossnickle, Steinberg, Rogers, Dixon,<lb />Higgins, Stapleton.<lb /><lb />It was announced that the deadline for submitting book orders for the spring quarter<lb />is January 17 and the deadline for the summer school schedule January 20, 1969.<lb /><lb />Dr. Prewett announced that calculators should not be taken out of the building at<lb />any time. The staff was also asked if they had any knowledge of a film that has<lb />been misplaced; if so, please advise Dr. Hedges.<lb /><lb />Dr. Prewett read a letter from Dr. Rogers requesting that he be relieved of his<lb />memberhsip on the Faculty Senate. Motion was made and unanimously passed that his<lb />request be granted.<lb /><lb />Dr. Grossnickle was unanimously elected to fill the unexpired term of Dr. Rogers.<lb /><lb />Dr. Prewett, reporting for the Admissions Committee, made the following announce-<lb /><lb />&amp; ments:<lb /><lb />1. Three students have been recommended to the Graduate School for<lb />acceptance to the clinical program in psychology beginning fall 1969.<lb /><lb />2. That a deadline of May 1 has been set for students accepted for<lb />graduate study to notify the Department whether or not they plan<lb />to attend East Carolina.<lb /><lb />3. That a limit of 25 students per academic year be admitted to the<lb />graduate programs.<lb /><lb />Dr. Grossnickle announced that he had nothing to report from the President's<lb />Advisory Council.<lb /><lb />Dr. Rogers, reporting for the Committee on Graduate Students' Program, stated that<lb />the Committee had had a request from William Schlenger, now a Ph.D. candidate at<lb />N. C. State University, that he be permitted to take Motivation by readings due<lb /><lb />to the fact that State has no course that is comparable to the Motivation course<lb />here. It was moved and unanimously passed that Mr. Schlenger be permitted to do<lb />this.<lb /><lb />Dr. Grossnickle moved that a behavioral science minor for psychology majors be<lb />formulated and submitted to the Curriculum Committee for approval. Motion un-<lb />animously passed and the following committee was appointed to work this minor up:<lb />Grossnickle, Chairman, Stapleton, Harris, Daugherty, Dixon. This Committee was<lb />also instructed to examine the present composite minor and make any recommendations<lb />for revision.</p>

          <lb />-<lb /><lb />Dr. Martoccia, reporting for the Comprehensive Examfination Committee, moved that the<lb />examination be limited to 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the afternoon; the<lb />morning session to be the core area and the afternoon session to be the spectalized<lb />area. Motion seconded. After a lengthy discussion motion made and unanimously<lb />passed that this motion be tabled and another motion was made that a special<lb />committee be appointed to study the question of changes in the comprehensive. After<lb />a lengthy discussion the motion was amended to read that an open meeting would be<lb />held and all interested parties invited. The present committee was asked to func-<lb />tion in setting this meeting up; Dr. Martoccia requested that he be relieved as<lb />Chairman and Dr. Mitchell was asked to chair the meeting and all interested persons<lb />were asked to notify him of their interest and teaching schedule in order that a<lb />convenient time can be arranged for the meeting.<lb /><lb />Dr. Martoccia read a letter from Dan Miller requesting that he be re-tested only<lb />in the area of learning and that this examination be given him at the earliest<lb />possible date. Dr. Mitchell moved that Mr. Miller's request be granted.<lb /><lb />Motion passed with 10 in favor and 6 opposing.<lb /><lb />Dr. Rogers presented syllabi for two new courses: Psychological Research - 396abc<lb />for 3 hours credit and Non-parametric Statistics - 429 for 3 hours credit. Motion<lb />made that these courses be adopted.
