MINUTES OF JANUARY STAFF MEETING& Psychology DepartmentJanuary 13, 1969The Psychology Department held its January meeting in EP 104 at 4 o'clock, January13, i969,PRESENT: Prewett, Moore, Martoccia, Latham, Harris, Tacker, Daugherty, MitchellKinzie, Hedges, Williams, Long, Grossnickle, Steinberg, Rogers, Dixon,Higgins, Stapleton.It was announced that the deadline for submitting book orders for the spring quarteris January 17 and the deadline for the summer school schedule January 20, 1969.Dr. Prewett announced that calculators should not be taken out of the building atany time. The staff was also asked if they had any knowledge of a film that hasbeen misplaced; if so, please advise Dr. Hedges.Dr. Prewett read a letter from Dr. Rogers requesting that he be relieved of hismemberhsip on the Faculty Senate. Motion was made and unanimously passed that hisrequest be granted.Dr. Grossnickle was unanimously elected to fill the unexpired term of Dr. Rogers.Dr. Prewett, reporting for the Admissions Committee, made the following announce-& ments:1. Three students have been recommended to the Graduate School foracceptance to the clinical program in psychology beginning fall 1969.2. That a deadline of May 1 has been set for students accepted forgraduate study to notify the Department whether or not they planto attend East Carolina.3. That a limit of 25 students per academic year be admitted to thegraduate programs.Dr. Grossnickle announced that he had nothing to report from the President'sAdvisory Council.Dr. Rogers, reporting for the Committee on Graduate Students' Program, stated thatthe Committee had had a request from William Schlenger, now a Ph.D. candidate atN. C. State University, that he be permitted to take Motivation by readings dueto the fact that State has no course that is comparable to the Motivation coursehere. It was moved and unanimously passed that Mr. Schlenger be permitted to dothis.Dr. Grossnickle moved that a behavioral science minor for psychology majors beformulated and submitted to the Curriculum Committee for approval. Motion un-animously passed and the following committee was appointed to work this minor up:Grossnickle, Chairman, Stapleton, Harris, Daugherty, Dixon. This Committee wasalso instructed to examine the present composite minor and make any recommendationsfor revision.

-Dr. Martoccia, reporting for the Comprehensive Examfination Committee, moved that theexamination be limited to 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the afternoon; themorning session to be the core area and the afternoon session to be the spectalizedarea. Motion seconded. After a lengthy discussion motion made and unanimouslypassed that this motion be tabled and another motion was made that a specialcommittee be appointed to study the question of changes in the comprehensive. Aftera lengthy discussion the motion was amended to read that an open meeting would beheld and all interested parties invited. The present committee was asked to func-tion in setting this meeting up; Dr. Martoccia requested that he be relieved asChairman and Dr. Mitchell was asked to chair the meeting and all interested personswere asked to notify him of their interest and teaching schedule in order that aconvenient time can be arranged for the meeting.Dr. Martoccia read a letter from Dan Miller requesting that he be re-tested onlyin the area of learning and that this examination be given him at the earliestpossible date. Dr. Mitchell moved that Mr. Miller's request be granted.Motion passed with 10 in favor and 6 opposing.Dr. Rogers presented syllabi for two new courses: Psychological Research - 396abcfor 3 hours credit and Non-parametric Statistics - 429 for 3 hours credit. Motionmade that these courses be adopted.
