<lb />MINUTES OF MAY STAFF MEETING<lb />Psychology Department<lb />May 6, 1968<lb /><lb />The Psychology Department held its May meeting in EP 104 at 4 o'clock, May 6, 1968.<lb /><lb />PRESENT: Prewett, Higgins, Martoccia, Kinzie, Rogers, Steinberg, Dixon, Mitchell,<lb />Long, McLain, Williams, Grossnickle, Fell, Stapleton.<lb /><lb />Dr. Long, Chairman of the Graduate Admissions Committee, announced that 10<lb />students have been admitted to the general-theoretical program and 17 to the<lb />clinical program. A list is attached showing the school they came from and the<lb />student's GRE scores.<lb /><lb />Dr. Martoccia reporting for the Library Committee stated that Miss Brantley, a<lb />student helper who has been assigned to the Library Committee for the past 2<lb />years, is not graduating as stated previously but is going to be away on an<lb />internship and he asked that a replacement for her be secured. He also said that<lb />it was not necessary to hold back orders for books simply because the budget had<lb />been expended as the library is behind in their orders and it would be sometime<lb />before the order could be processed.<lb /><lb />Reporting for the Comprehensive Committee, Dr. Martoccia announced that the<lb />examination would be given May 11 and at that time those who failed it the last<lb />time should re-take it on this date, as well as some students taking it for the<lb />first time.<lb /><lb />Dr. Long announced that none of the new clinical students planned to take it at<lb />this time. It was pointed out that the University's only requirement about time<lb />the examination should be taken is that a certain number of hours must have been<lb />passed before a student can take the comprehensive, with nothing being said of<lb />how long a student may delay taking it.<lb /><lb />Dr. Rogers reported on some proposed changes for the graduate handbook. After<lb /><lb />a lengthy discussion Dr. Long moved that the Comprehensive Committee have another<lb />meeting to re-study the problem and the faculty be advised as to when and where<lb />the meeting would be held and invited to attend. At this meeting the problem<lb />would be thoroughly studied and a recommendation brought back to the staff,<lb />Motion seconded and unanimously passed.<lb /><lb />Miss McLain suggested that the entire Graduate handbook should be re-done,<lb /><lb />Dr. Grossnickle, Chairman of the Psychology 50/100 Committee, announced that a<lb />new textbook has been recommended for Psychology 50--Kagan and Havemann's<lb />Psychology and that this text be adopted beginning with the fall quarter. Motion<lb />made, seconded and unanimously passed that this report be accepted,<lb /><lb />Dr. Prewett read a letter from William Schlenger, a graduate student, requesting<lb />that he be permitted to take Psychology 311G (Sensation and Perception) and<lb />Psychology 426 (Motivation) by examination. A motion was made and seconded that<lb />the Committee on Graduate Students' Programs be re-activated to take action on<lb />Mr. Schlenger's case. Miss McLain moved that the Committee's recommendations be<lb />accepted as final only in Mr. Schlenger's case. Motion unanimously passed as<lb />amended by Miss McLain,</p>

Does anyone from this Department want to serve on the<lb />committee to study the problem? Yes<lb />Ce. Rea Pixon<lb /><lb />3. Should the committee be appointed to investigate the exemption<lb />from finals for a student having a high grade? Yes<lb /><lb />Dy. Prewett asked that the staff please return the faculty research cards either<lb />to the Departmental Office or directly to The Graduate School.<lb /><lb />Dr, Prewett announced that Dr. Charles Moore, Dr. Stephen Tacker, Mrs. Julia<lb />Harris, and Dr. Boice Daugherty had signed contracts and would be joining the<lb />faculty in the fall.<lb /><lb />Dr. Prewett asked if anyone knew of a person in the educational psychology area<lb />that might be interested in joining the faculty at East Carolina to please<lb />inform him.<lb /><lb />It was announced that Dr. Spurgeon Cole would be leaving at the end of this term<lb />to join the faculty at Clemson and Mr. Graham Burkheimer would be leaving to<lb />begin his doctoral program the at The Univérsity of Nerth Carolina at .Chapel Hill.<lb /><lb />The meeting adjourned at 5:30.<lb /><lb />Cx<lb />Pd<lb />rs : j a ry ass wail,<lb />f tm, 4 7 : +<lb />7 f 2 ?" z f » 2 =<lb />Fon ?oa / ae os a wr neon 2 : f : P 5)<lb />ee So Y SS a ke ?~ : Fa 7 4 ee fei<lb /><lb />,? Jean Brown, Secretary Clinton R,.
