MINUTES OF MAY STAFF MEETINGPsychology DepartmentMay 6, 1968The Psychology Department held its May meeting in EP 104 at 4 o'clock, May 6, 1968.PRESENT: Prewett, Higgins, Martoccia, Kinzie, Rogers, Steinberg, Dixon, Mitchell,Long, McLain, Williams, Grossnickle, Fell, Stapleton.Dr. Long, Chairman of the Graduate Admissions Committee, announced that 10students have been admitted to the general-theoretical program and 17 to theclinical program. A list is attached showing the school they came from and thestudent's GRE scores.Dr. Martoccia reporting for the Library Committee stated that Miss Brantley, astudent helper who has been assigned to the Library Committee for the past 2years, is not graduating as stated previously but is going to be away on aninternship and he asked that a replacement for her be secured. He also said thatit was not necessary to hold back orders for books simply because the budget hadbeen expended as the library is behind in their orders and it would be sometimebefore the order could be processed.Reporting for the Comprehensive Committee, Dr. Martoccia announced that theexamination would be given May 11 and at that time those who failed it the lasttime should re-take it on this date, as well as some students taking it for thefirst time.Dr. Long announced that none of the new clinical students planned to take it atthis time. It was pointed out that the University's only requirement about timethe examination should be taken is that a certain number of hours must have beenpassed before a student can take the comprehensive, with nothing being said ofhow long a student may delay taking it.Dr. Rogers reported on some proposed changes for the graduate handbook. Aftera lengthy discussion Dr. Long moved that the Comprehensive Committee have anothermeeting to re-study the problem and the faculty be advised as to when and wherethe meeting would be held and invited to attend. At this meeting the problemwould be thoroughly studied and a recommendation brought back to the staff,Motion seconded and unanimously passed.Miss McLain suggested that the entire Graduate handbook should be re-done,Dr. Grossnickle, Chairman of the Psychology 50/100 Committee, announced that anew textbook has been recommended for Psychology 50--Kagan and Havemann'sPsychology and that this text be adopted beginning with the fall quarter. Motionmade, seconded and unanimously passed that this report be accepted,Dr. Prewett read a letter from William Schlenger, a graduate student, requestingthat he be permitted to take Psychology 311G (Sensation and Perception) andPsychology 426 (Motivation) by examination. A motion was made and seconded thatthe Committee on Graduate Students' Programs be re-activated to take action onMr. Schlenger's case. Miss McLain moved that the Committee's recommendations beaccepted as final only in Mr. Schlenger's case. Motion unanimously passed asamended by Miss McLain,
